If you're a sidescrolling platformer and not hitting 60fps in 2019, I'm gonna ask some questions.

Mostly: what the fuck were they thinking.

This is true though.

Getting this on PC because of the 30fps.

It’s not like the switch cant handle it. This is made on unity isn’t it? Unity games always run like trash.

Played some of this. Pretty cool. I'd forgotten Igavania's had the absorb enemy ability thing. Definitely separates it from all the other Metroidvanias in the last bunch of years. The gotta catch 'em all feel is strong. Also forgot about the different weapons (I haven't re-played SoTN since the PS1 classic came out on PS3, so it's been a while).

Music is a total pleasure. Missed that style Yamane.

Only thing I'm not 100% on is the character movement, I guess if I went back to SotN the physics are probably pretty close to this, but compared to stuff like Hollow Knight or Guacamelee the controls feel a lot slower/floatier than I'm used to in metroidvania's these days.

Unreal.

Maybe it will get fixed. I really gotta see impressions next week I think. If the frame rate is steady it will probably be passable.

It’s buggy. In three hours, I managed to make an item in my inventory disappear and twice I haven’t been able to pick up an enemy drop. This is with the patch. On pS4 Pro.

NES-style appetizer. Been out for a while.

Appetizer? That's the main damn course. There are only two Igavania's worth their shit, maybe three - Symphony and Aria. I vastly prefer classic Castlevania so I didn't know this was a thing, and holy fuck I might have to get this eventually.

Early in ROTN, I’d say normal is about SOTN difficulty, with bosses that (so far) are a bit tougher (they were all first time cakewalks in SOTN).

How does Bloodstained promise to be refreshing? Metroidvania has exploded in recent in years and the formula was wearing thin with CV by the time Portrait and Ecclesia dropped.

I don’t think refreshing is a selling point on this game, but if it helps, at least you won’t be dealing with the same enemies with the same attack patterns using sprites from the SNES and PS1 again. Changing the movement pattern of Castlevania bats = Igavania innovation.

Well yea before I bought it, to see if it would even work on my system which even though my pc is powerful enough some games don't support a certain subset of cpu instructions so that may screw me.

Strangely enough the Steam version was compatible with the pirate version save file wise? Oh well I just started over to get any ( havent looked at them ) achievements.

Yeah Circle is awesome. It was actually my first Metroidvania game ever as I didn't even play SOTN till it came out on the 360. Probably never knew it even existed back in the PS1 days. Never played a demo of it, and I played so many demo's haha. I probably would have loved it then too.

So weird then how I never bothered to buy the other two GBA games. I will probably have to rectify that mistake pretty soon.

What's the main differences between the DS and GBA games? Because at the time the impression I got was the DS games were the new hotness, especially Ecclesia.

Dawn of Sorrow is a pretty good follow-up to Aria that suffers from bad anime art and touch screen gimmicks. Ecclesia is good and makes some strides towards making a Castlevania game that's not piss easy again. It's a bit different though and not everyone loves that. A significant chunk of the game takes place in completely segmented off sub-levels that are often way more linear than the open castle design you're used to exploring. For that matter, just getting to Dracula's Castle at all involves an annoying fetch quest of saving all the villagers.

Portrait of Ruin I barely remember outside of it being the one where you switched between two characters on the fly, right? I liked it at the time, but it left no lasting impression clearly.

Circle of the Moon - the best and most well rounded Igavania not named Aria or Symphony

Harmony of Disspnance - poop

Aria of Sorrow - finally a successor to SotN. Has the most interesting plot in a Castlevania game. Contender for favorite Metroidvania and overlooked because of its big brother Symphony.

Dawn of Sorrow - I made a custom weapon in this and used it 3/4 the entire game. Horrible QA. Boring follow up to Aria besides Julius mode which rocks.

Portrait of Ruin - uses interesting JONATHON!!!! CHARLOTTE!!!!! gimmick, has more classic Castlevania-isms to it than previous games but is ultimately forgettable.

Order of Ecclesia - fun at first but gets boring quick. Never finished was done with Igavania and hoping he was kicked from Castlevania after it. He was.

Harmony of Despair is some weird shit. The gimmick is that you can hit a button and show THE ENTIRE FUCKING CASTLE AT ONCE on a 1080p display which I was like fuuuuuuuck that's awesome. I think it's best played in Coop? It's a weird game for sure.

Playing Portrait of Ruin right now and having a great time. It's the only one of the DS games I hadn't played.

I think Iga agrees with you (us) too. Didn't he say in an interview or something that if he could go back to castlevania and do 100% what he wanted he'd go back to this modern timeline and do another fight against dracula again properly or something like that. The main impression being he wanted to do another contemporary set CV.

I remember something about "The battle of 1999" being part of the Igavania hype back in the day.

For the Igavania's the sales dried up but so did the marketing and advertising.
Konami pushed other games (most notably Metal Gear Solid) much more than Castlevania which sort of became this sideshow on handhelds.

Handhelds also have sort of the same lifecycle where early in their lifespans the teens/adults would be the key audience and this sort of game would do well.
However, by year 4 or 5 the library would mostly focus on kids with smaller (cheaper) models.

It didn't help that Iga's series burned out just before downloadable indie games on console became popular and handheld gaming was expected to be replaced by smartphones.

Anyhow, did my part and placed my order today.  8)
