Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Review

Mario Kart 8 is the best Mario Kart game ever.

Full confession: I've never thought Mario Kart games were top tier racing games. Don't mistake me saying they're bad games, because for the most part Mario Kart games aren't. But they've always excelled while in a group more than they did alone. Mario Kart games were always fun to that extent, but were never, ever on the same level as its contemporary peers. It has been outclassed by competition from Virtua Racing and Daytona to Jet Moto 2, Ridge Racer 4, Wipeout XL, Crash Team Racing. From Burnout 3, Colin McRae, SSX Tricky/SSX3, Outrun 2006 on down to Sonic Team Racing and Sonic Transformed. Mario Kart has never eclipsed the competition in terms of graphics, feel, and overall package. It's not a shock that the best Nintendo racer ever made wasn't even made by Nintendo but by Sega in F-Zero GX. Even lesser known racers like Initial D ps1 or Extreme Stage and Tokyo Extreme Racer line of games, I feel are better racing games than Mario Kart games.

MK games have either a wack presentation or bad feel (lack of speed) to make them appealing in the long run. I've never felt a Mario Kart game was a top tier racer due to this. Presentation matters when it comes to racers and Mario Kart games have never been there.

Compared to its competition it has been lesser.

vs

It's not even close.

It took over 20 years for Mario Kart to catch up in terms of overall visual appeal and aesthetic.

And then there's Mario Kart 8.

Truly the first Mario Kart that transcends the series as it turns into a fantastic racing game with excellent presentation, great sense of speed, and excellent track design. I usually play Mario Kart games for a few minutes on single player. I'll beat a cup and then turn the game off out of boredom.

But not MK8 Deluxe. I've been playing this game since I got it and have cleared the entire 150CC, which has 10 cups in just a few sittings.

For the first time ever I've been comfortable in saying a Mario Kart 8 is heads and shoulders a top tier racer that should have longevity beyond multiplayer. I've played it online and it's fun as shit. Even though the rest of the competition is mostly dead and Mario Kart is kind of the only arcade racer in the town now, it's still everything that embodies the greatness of the genre.

Fantastic game.

I kind of get the feeling that dumb rc car and game for $100 is this gen's 'new' Mario Kart. Would love to end up being wrong.

Yeah. It's a fun game in sp in principle but there is just no sense of progression in mk8.

Jesus Christ, Nintendo knows how to print money.
Just by virtue of being able to play as those side characters from BotW, this is gonna sell a trillion copies.
It's really a genius move to get people to buy a fucking Musou. :thinking

Smart money printing decision from both companies.

Another musou game I'll buy at some point and play 1-2 hours and be good on it. But at least they're keeping musou alive so when they make entries I'm interested in I can play them.

To me it looks like they're getting all the third party games and announcements out of the way with these mini directs.

They will probably do a separate reveal/direct for their own 1 or 2 big holiday titles.
Which I think will be Mario Anniversary thing, Bravely Default II and/or Zelda.

So something like:
September: Mario Anniversary
October: Pikmin 3: Deluxe
November: Zelda (or Mario, with Zelda in March)
December: Bravely Default II

Unlike what those insiders think, I don't think Nintendo will drop a more expensive 4k capable Switch early next year.

Wonder how many kids got their parents to buy that one only to find out it has nothing to do with BOTW.  :lol

I see this being another fire that Nintendo is trying to put out (just like the Wii U scenario)..  Practically everyone enjoyed BOTW.. So when they announced the Champions DLC... it was hugely disappointing seeing as you still couldn't play as anyone else, like, you know, ... the Champions!  It was so disappointing that even my 9 year old daughter wrote to Nintendo asking for them to make them playable someday...

So a part of me is really glad that they're FINALLY doing this... and in a good way too, because HW was one of the best Musou games, imho.  (Love playing as Linkle)
However, that being said, ...is this just gonna have 6 characters? (Link, Zelda & the 4 Champions?)  Will this just be a HW Lite in a way?  I would like to know more, as besides Mario Odyssey, this is one of the first games making me want to get a Switch.

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo has upped production targets again to 30 million units for this fiscal year to meet the insane demand, with suppliers already running at 120% capacity.
They're also reporting Nintendo asked developers to get their games '4k ready' for the new upcoming hardware.

I'd argue it started on PS1 -
Chrono Trigger and the FF4-6 ports (from what I remember, these are literally just SNES ROMs with additional FMV bolted on), PS1 "Intellivision Lives", Namco Museum, etc.

Granted everything on Switch seems to sell like bread, but of course if you announce a limited release, you're going to get an initial sale boost, if anything because of Scalpers and Panic buyers.
Then they can just just rerelease the games individually, and get the rest of the sales after it, too.  :doge

Nintendo printed very few copies of many games during the GameCube era. It was very dire in Europe especially.
Try to find Fire Emblem now. If it wasn't Player's Choice it would only get 1 print. (I believe a game was considered for the 'Player's Choice' line if it sold up to 250k units)

Retailers said they would love to sell more and could sell more if Nintendo supplied them more copies.
But they would have like 10 or 20 pre-orders of Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat and Nintendo send them 3 copies.
Meanwhile they would collect piles of unsold Need for Speed ports, various Sonic games and Rayman 3 copies from Ubisoft and EA.

I've only ever seen 1 copy of Advance Wars: Dark Conflict in my life and that's the copy I own and the only copy the store got when I walked in to buy it.
Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission on the GBA were again examples of games in very short supply.

And Nintendo in the NES era was notorious for "chip shortages", their first party releases were real hard to find. I recently picked up an old Nintendo Power (the Track and Field II one because I liked the cover) and in the upcoming games section, they had Zelda 2 with the "limited quantities" quantifier next to it... I remember that game being a bitch to find back in the day, luckily we found one at Caldor, a defunct discount store with the best and most 70s logo ever.

They're kind of both.  Takes the base SNES games and expands on them with new content, redrawn/reanimated sprites and backgrounds, etc.  Here's Ninja Warriors with one of the two new characters, for example:
