Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper's senior team urged him last month to withdraw from the presidential race gracefully and run for Colorado's Senate seat or pursue other opportunities, a source familiar with the situation told POLITICO.

The source said that the campaign only has about 13,000 donors, making it almost impossible to qualify for the next round of presidential debates in the fall. The campaign also only raised just over $1 million in the second quarter — about what he raised in the first 48 hours of his candidacy — and will likely run out of money completely in about a month.

At least five staffers have left or are leaving Hickenlooper's struggling operation, including his campaign manager, communications director, digital director and finance director. Hickenlooper named a new campaign manager on Monday night.

Hickenlooper just needs to hold out. If the other 4 bottom people drop out soon, his support can skyrocket to 2%.

Bernie Sanders raised $18 million over the past three months, his campaign announced Tuesday — trailing significantly behind Pete Buttigieg after leading the Democratic pack in the first quarter of 2019.

Staffers said the Vermont senator has received about 2 million individual contributions this year, and 45 percent of his donors are under the age of 40. He also transferred $6 million from previous campaign accounts, his aides said.
You're... allowed to hold onto that money after you suspend your campaign? Kara, explain.

Didn't look too much into it, but this is the wonk wisdom behind Kirsten Gillibrand (Our Undying Lord Neoliberal Queen) not dropping out: she has a senate campaign warchest that none of the other < 10% losers have access to so she can just wait this stuff out and then [underpants gnome meme].

IIRC you can transfer the surplus from old campaigns that were also for federal office, but not for state/local offices.

In other words, Congress passed a law where senators running for president and representatives running for senate could get a leg up on governors and mayors.

Oh for sure, people will be let down in case he would be elected and it will be even more acute than with Obama because while Bernie's schtick is maybe no less fuzzy and abstract than "Hope" he is conveying it pretty forcefully.

At least Sanders could be seen actively fighting for things even if they didn't get through, which could maybe blunt the disappointment.

Biden's schtick of saying he could bring reach across to Republicans would be really easy to undercut.

I disagree. People who expect magic things to happen...expect magic things to happen. Sanders would no doubt retain some true believers no matter what, just as Trump has. But by the midterms we'd be looking at a president who has achieved nothing, an economy that may be worse than it is now (not Sanders' fault, but he'd get the blame), and all types of right wing nonsense spreading across the country. That's not a recipe for political success. Sanders would no doubt lose support for supporting some basic deals to keep the government open, ICE would likely still be around, etc.

Few years ago when I thought Hillary was going to easily win, I thought she was walking into a fucking disaster. At this point in her presidency she'd likely have one SC justice (I'm assuming Kennedy wouldn't retire) and that's about it on the achievement list. Lots of spending battles, no solutions on immigration, no ability to address Obamacare fixes, right wing violence/red states doing wild shit, Russian leaks of her admin's private documents, disillusioned young people/iberals/etc not showing up in future elections, etc.

If a dem wins in 2020 the same will likely apply. Gonna be ugly fellas.

OK. It's either that or four more years of Trump.

Still an easy decision for me.

Also that SC pick might have tipped the gerrymandering thing, which would have opened up various parts of the country to "turn" blue before the next cycle. I'm not a doomsayer on the issue like some people, the amount of under-30s just absolutely disgusted with the GOP is not a problem they can ignore forever, but it does make it depressing in the short-term.

I like the flag and don't agree with the hullabaloo either.  When I searched to see what was going on a Rolling Stone article said that the Betsy Ross flag is popular with some extremists and white supremacists.  I didn't know that but it seems to me like those groups just gained ownership of the flag.  I associated the flag with things like republicanism.

The left needs to stand its ground on memes now and then instead of always fleeing from them like 1950s white people to the suburbs.

But most importantly I don't want to make a big deal about the hullabaloo.

Texas State Guard ordered to monitor military’s Operation Jade Helm 15

Two months after news surfaced that U.S. Special Operations troops will launch a broad training operation in several southwestern states this summer, the Texas state government is registering new concerns: Gov. Greg Abbott called Tuesday for the Texas State Guard to monitor the mission.

Abbott, a Republican, said in a letter to Maj. Gen. Gerald “Jake” Betty that he wants monitoring of Operation Jade Helm 15 “to address concerns of Texas citizens and to ensure that Texas communities remain safe, secure and informed occurring in their vicinity.” It marks the first time that a state governor has responded to outrage from those who fear the training exercise isn’t what the military promises.

“During the training operation, it is important that Texans know their safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed,” Abbott wrote. “By monitoring the Operation on a continual basis, the State Guard will facilitate communication between my office and commanders of the Operation to ensure that adequate measures are in place to protect Texans.”
