I think what the average American makes is kind of irrelevant in this context, because I highly doubt any of these begpackers have jobs. I mean, what job is going to let you take a 3-6 month paid vacation so you can beg your way through Europe.

Just some old black dude. I found out subsequently that he was an old skool DJ back in the day, and that he is actually the person who coined the term 'house'. As in house music. They don't say there was nothing wrong with what he said in the interview, but at the same time, they don't think he should be raked over the coals for it either. It is quite balanced really, and some good points are made from both sides.
