On the flip side, asians who came to the US via asylum programs (like the Hmong) are up against the same issues that migrants from central america face.

Whatever the reason, I think all studies find that in the recent past and present "Asians" or "American Asians" (and I think it's true in Europe as well) do "overperform" in getting into elite schools and in certain valued professional sectors, sometimes in spite of soft discrimination (like in the US schools where interviews and value judgements + evaluations were suspected to be used to discriminate). Correct me if I'm wrong.

The history of Chinese immigration to the US makes for unpleasant reading, but by the 1960s were considered 'honorary whites' in terms of things like scholastic segregation in the southern states.
