Who else, besides Dio, created fantastical worlds in their songs? Maiden rocks and has amazing story telling but so far their stories are of THIS world, not the world of Dio's which we can only assume is called Heavy Metal.

Were motorhead albums recorded in a bathroom? The mixing is so bad. Like I'm listening to White Line Fever and the guitars sound muted.

They do have a guttural sound all around but I'd disagree with that seeing as that White Lines Fever recording is my favorite for how rough it is.

Not all bands are going to click with you and that's fine, but Motorhead had a pretty good run there for a while. Not sure why Lemmy's voice bothers you this much but different strokes and all that.

Just going to drop this here cause it's sick and let you move on to whatever else.

Song is a total headbanger. Good stuff. Hopefully I can get into them. I love Lemmy as a person. Seemed like a rocking dude.

Giving Motörhead the ol five listen try. Last night I couldn’t get through their first album because of Lemmy’s voice so I don’t consider that an earnest try. I’ll give them five legitimate listens.

I’ve been listening to so many acts with opera vocals that I’m sure found his singing a shock. I’ll force myself to get used to it by listening more.

well yeah kind of. on one hand there is a lot of theatrical metal bands out there, that look reaaaaally gay, and actually aren't. but people apparently werent too surprised with him

Quote
Then there was the frontman’s outfit. The chained sailor’s cap, leather trousers and cut-off leather jacket over a bare chest, accessorised by studded wristbands and a whip, screamed one clear message to us kids: he must be really hard.

“In all honesty it never crossed my mind,” says Rob Halford, who came out in 1998 to the surprise of no one, apart from the under-12s. “I would dress up in leather, with the whips and chains, and the farthest thing from my mind was that I looked like a gay guy. Later on, when people referenced it, I thought, ‘You know what? Maybe they’ve got a point.’ ”

Heavy metal is a mostly heterosexual world, despite its theatrical tendencies. You would imagine Halford’s coming-out might dent the band’s appeal. In fact, the opposite happened.

“The reaction from the metal crowd was, ‘You think we didn’t know?’ ” he says. “Heavy metal fans feel like outsiders anyway and it turns out I wasn’t the only gay in the metal village. I got these wonderful letters, beautiful expressions of solidarity, people saying what a relief it had been for them. Now here we are in 2018 and we still have a long way to go.”

Been going to r/metal. They post a lot of new and old stuff. It’s helping me pin down my tastes. I’ve found I don’t like regular death metal but I do like melodic death metal. It’s been really helpful.

Various subgenres I’ve found I like:

Thrash

Melodic death

Black

Heavy

Melodic death

Also is death metal the most popular metal genre or something? Because it’s easily the most posted about subgenre on r/metal.

symphonic death is the absolute centre of the intense/theatric venn:

like other people have touched on, one of my favourite things about metal is that it exists in a quantum state where it both takes itself 100% seriously while being a massive over the top parody of itself at the same time.

I’m learning the subgenres within subgenres. :lol

Like Helloween might as well be a different power metal than DragonPoop :lol

Helloween :rock

So far it’s looking like traditional metal, power, and some death are my genres. :) Thrash is okay but feels more uhhh youthful? I don’t have that rage. Could work depending on context but thrash seems TOO ANGRY for me. Idk could be wrong.

POWER :rejoice

THE POWER UNLEASHED BY DIO :rejoice

Yeah, I ended up listening to death metal all night while reading.

My conclusion: I think death metal is shit. Technicality means jack shit if your album has very little song variety, songs use the same motifs over and over, you only know one type of song writing: go 100 or go 110, and musicianship takes precedence over songwriting, and being fast and extreme is the only sole purpose for your art. Probably as boring a genre as trap, and many pop genres metalheads gripe about.

Different strokes.

I'm REALLY like traditional heavy metal, stoner metal, power metal, new wave of british metal, and prog metal. I'm really finding my groove. I'll finish the 80's new wave then start branching out. :rock

Can't disagree with that assessment. There are a huge number of death metal subgenres though, so maybe you just need to find the right one. Melodic death metal is often a good gateway drug into broader death metal.

Have you tried Morbid Angel's Covenant or Deicide's self titled album?

I tried melodic and although I like that more than standard death metal even that is like shooting a fish in an ocean for me. I thought it'd be for me based off some of the stuff I listened to but the more I explored the less I liked and realized the ones I liked were just exceptions.

I have listened to Death's Scream Bloody Gore, Cannibal Corpse's Scream Bloody Gore, Cannibal Corpse's The Bleeding, At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul, In Flames, Bolt Thunder, some Kalmuh.

Try the two I mentioned earlier. If you don't enjoy those then death metal is not for you.

Edit: Although, I would have gone for Cannibal Corpse's  Eaten Back to Life rather than The Bleeding.

Edit edit: You MUST try Carcass's Heartwork album too. Probably the most musically accomplished straight death metal album ever.

Wow I listened to a shit ton of metal today.

Reviews:

Anthrax - Fistful of Metal - average and boring with some bright spots, listened to their follow up album and it was better but I just wasn't feeling it. Will keep listening to their albums.

Saxon - Saxon - is this even heavy metal? It's good but not heavy metal to me considering the time period it was released. Apparently Saxon becomes metal on their second LP. I'll check it.

Mercyful Fate - Melissa - broke new ground today. I refused to listen to any satanist musicians or artists and considering King Diamond is a satanist I passed them over. But by opening my mind I decided to listen  and give them a chance. Surprisingly great album that serves as a wonderful prototype for thrash. Really proud of myself for giving them a shot despite my initial concerns.

Slayer - Show No Mercy - Holy. Fucking. Shit. Best metal debut I've heard so far. Insane album. Although the content has a lot of satanist stuff, they're clearly playing theatrics and being edgy and it's working. A lot. They're so horrifying and great at conveying atmosphere.

Megadeth - Peace Sells - Megadeth and Metallica are the first metal albums I listened to ten years ago. I wanted to revisit them. Years later, I still prefer Megadeth. Artistically, lyrically, sonically, they just appeal to me more.

Metallica - Kill Em All - still dope.

Wew. Topping it off with Slayer and Manilla Road before bed.

Manilla Road - So far I've only covered their debut. Stellar stuff.

Death - Skeptical giving them another shot but I quite liked Leprosy. I've found that car speakers work really well for death metal. Although I'm not the biggest death metal fan this helped me appreciate it a lot more. I liked it! I was also really mad when I listened to it and ended up challenging my anger into the music. Very therapeutic. Although I liked it didn't rid of my overall complaints with the genre: that it's too repetitive, there's little song variety. Definitely pushes me to try more melodeath though!

SaxonWhile Saxon's debut LP, self titled Saxon, was a good hard rock album it wasn't heavy metal. Wheels of Steel / Denim and Leather more than make up for this. These albums are rock hard. Very, very heavy metal and two classics.

Girlschool - So far I like them.

Demon Bitch - Easily my favorite modern band so far. They're lo-fi  trad metal and they kick ass. Listen to Hellfriends.

Uncle Acid - Good stoner metal. My introduction to doom metal outside of this thread. Like!

Venom - What an utterly surprising record in Black Metal. You can tell Slayer's influences here as well as where the Black Metal label came from. The cover is depicting Satan and yet the actual content is far from Satanic. Real surprise.

Loving the genre. Only complaint is that death metal is too popular in modern metal. Someone put on to the local metal radio bloc and it was mostly death metal. It just lacks variety. I have no idea why people just want death metal, it makes no sense. Like it all you want but why does it have to encapsulate so much of the genre? Fuck.

I also don't like death metal fans from what I've seen for the most part. Like this ridiculous article on Noisey. International Slayer Day but it's a bad day because...Slayer isn't really Satanist?

Quote
Given vocalist Tom Araya’s avowed Catholic faith, any reference to Satanism or apostasy inadvertently falls a bit flat, and one wonders whether we sort of… wasted… that day on a band who are thoroughly iconic and objectively sick, but don’t actually give much of a toss about the Dark Lord.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on something like My Dying Bride. They occupy quite a unique subgenre (doom/death) and are like a mix of gothic rock and death metal.

Their Turn Loose the Swans album is one of my all time top 5. I think you might find something of value there.
