Basically when I took the job I was asked how many hours I could do. It’s a job where there hours are very flexible. So I said I could do 6 days a week for about 6-7 hours a day depending on the day. Hiring manager said that was great.


Then on the second day of my training my trainer kept prying as to why I can’t just do 8 hours (6 and 7 is close to 8 anyway? Why so fussy??) anyway I just said I have personal Commitments I need to fulfil.

She just kind of went silent and then said...”ok? So what are those commitments?”

In fear of wanting to keep this job if no prospects come through I told the truth. My father needs caretaking while my mother works and part time so I look after him and we switch depending on our schedules. While I wasn’t working it was mostly me but they know if I get a permanent full time job I won’t be able to do it. It’s a private arrangement which was completely pried out of me and to be honest I felt extremely uncomfortable talking to them about and to be honest even after explaining the trainers attitude was basically “can’t he get a professional??”

Why do I think this was a normal conversation that they read entirely wrong?

And then shortly after (I’m an immigrant, by the way) she implied maybe or maybe not in relation to me not being able to work 8+ hours a day, she said that “it’s actually the immigrants who never want to work hard. It’s always people like Indians, Lebanese and those people who are always lazy”

I made it very clear that I was not impressed by the comment and she doubled down on it saying “well I’ve been in this company for years and I have plenty of experience with these people. I’m not racist but yeah...”

So did she say it or did she imply it? Two very different things.

Overall, I give this story 2 bullshits out of 5. Needs work.

I don't do it precisely because I do understand how risky it is for someone like me without a ton of money in the bank to eat those losses.

At least with casinos, federally, no you can't. Casino gambling is illegal in ~45 states. Now, if you mean, you can drive to another place (Indian Reservation, offshore gambling, etc) that is not regulated by the laws of the United States and gamble $100? Sure. In the 23 states that have some form of casino gambling regulated by state law, those are heavily regulated, a percentage of the revenue that they generate goes back to programs that try to address some of the ills associated with gambling, like addiction for instance, and all of those places are regulated to try to reduce public harm. It's also not really a coincidence that most of the states that have legalized casino gambling did so because there were other less regulated gambling establishments a short drive away (Indian reservations, river/offshore, etc)

We were always a very Disney-centric family. Disney cartoons were always playing at our house when I was young. We visited Disney World often (my mom had hoped to be able to see the new Star Wars theme park before she died, but alas covid happened and made it impossible). I always wanted to grow up to be a Disney animator, making the same kind of beautiful animated movies Disney used to make in the 40's through the 90's. My sister works with the Walt Disney company and our entire living room and kitchen are decorated in Disney paraphernalia.
