I have seen a small number of people getting banned for similar posts (i. e., using this word without explicitly trying to insult someone) so I know some of you understand this to some extent, at least. Which just makes it so much more saddening when nothing is done about most of such posts.

Knowing how moderation on this site works, I'm obviously not expecting such posts to receive any long-term bans but it would be nice to see something, whether that's a warning, a mod post, or even an automated word filter asking users to reconsider their word choice before posting. Even something small like that would go a long way towards making this forum feel more inclusive, because with the way this and similar issues are treated right now I sure as hell don't feel welcome posting in a lot of threads on this site. At the very least, you could remove offensive words/memes/images from posts that you do moderate. I've seen you do this a couple of times (which is much appreciated, btw.) so I really don't see why this can't be standard for all such posts.

On a related topic, there's also the use of a certain two-letter ableist 4-chan meme. The last time I brought this up an ex-moderator assured me this was bannable but a quick search shows that this isn't the case at all, with people using it often only getting a warning, or not even that.

I checked the recent threads that I think you're referring to, and I see a couple uses of the word, but used in a way where they are essentially quoting the person in the article using it. We'll also work on updating the FAQ to specifically educate people on this term, as I feel like it's one of those words that some people just picked up online and don't really know its connotation. Hopefully that can nip some of these incidents in the bud.

There's a reason the articles/tweets the posts were based on didn't use it, and it would be the absolutely amazing if this forum could move into that direction as well.

To reiterate, I'm not asking for those posts to be banned. Ideally, I'd like to, but I know that's probably unreasonable on a forum like this. Instead, I'd just like to see something that at least tries to move the forum in a more inclusive direction. The FAQ suggestion you make is one example of little things that could make this forum more inclusive. I know I'm not the only one who brought up issues with this forum and ableism, so I'd settle for at least seeing some indication that you care about stuff like this. A simple "hey, this word hurts people so try not to use it unless absolutely necessary" mod post in threads that are filled with people using the word, for example. Or simply consistently removing clearly offensive content instead of only doing it in extremely rare cases. I suppose the main reason I'm actually writing this is to at least show that some of us care these things. Seeing the response essentially imply that I'm wrong for finding the word hurtful in that context is the exact opposite of that.

And since you didn't touch on this point at all, the fact that directly using the word to insult other people (either on this forum or outside) sometimes only results in a 3-day ban is baffling. Everyone knows the word is incredibly offensive, yet people are able to use it and only get a slap on the wrists. I don't want this specific complaint to be lost among everything else because it's probably the most important one. Insulting another poster in such a way is a clear perma-ban on most other forums I visit so it's legit baffling that it's so different here.

Also, I honestly don't understand how you could read my post and think that replying with that word would be appropriate. I made it very clear that the word is hurtful to me. Putting a single star into it doesn't help at all. Writing this out is painful enough without responses like this.

The issue is not the mod team missing posts. That's understandable on a forum this size. It's that the ones you don't miss barely get punished. I did a quick search for a couple of variants of the word and out of 21 recent posts I found (and those were posts directly, unironically using the meme - not quoting someone else), 9 got nothing at all, 7 got a warning, 2 were banned for 1 day and 1 was banned for 3 days. Two of them got lengthier bans for additional reasons. Even ignoring the ones the moderation completely missed, most just got a warning. I don't see how anyone could call that "generally hitting those pretty hard". Maybe that's just a bad sample, idk., but it still seems like giving a warning is the default response. If I'm wrong about this I'd be happy to hear so.
