People use the term "consequences", as if it had some kind of absolute, virtuous value.
Getting a bad stare and getting stoned to death are both "consequence".
In and out of itself it means nothing, the proportion between crime and appropriate punishment, is where the debate lies.
And the bar for what offense fucks you out of a job, your livelihood, has been lowered by "virtue" of being enforced by internet mobs.
Many times that's been fine and reasonable, sometimes it hasn't (in my opinion), but a mob looking for the next dopamine rush isn't, in general, a great tool for "just" retribution, whatever that means.
