Taking off my staff hat here. This is my own personal opinion  ---

I mean, I don't PERSONALLY hate the idea of the thread. I was in the military, I got my Expert Marskaman ribbon, and i know about the proper handling and usage of a firearm.  I do not personally own a firearm for my own reasons, but if one were to suddenly appear before me, I would know how to use it.  I am also totally on board with efforts to ban and/or restrict gun ownership, because imo, the less guns that exist, the better.  I do, however, also acknowledge that bad actors exist, but - and this is a very strong "but" - the likelihood of anyone encountering a situation where a gun is necessary is extremely unlikely.  I won't sit back and lecture someone on why owning a firearm is a bad idea, simply because there are many reasons why someone may or may not wish to own one.  Some places are more dangerous than others, and the idea of owning one for protection can be enticing. I will always be an advocate for non-violence but I understand that there are edge cases where that may not be an option.

All that said, Era should be a place where we practice what we preach. I understand that our users are not a monolith and that there are differing opinions. But if we consistently have threads decrying things like police and gun violence, it is hard to accept having a thread that discusses users' guns - even if it is couched in the guise of safety and the like (and believe me, if anyone is going to own a weapon, I desperately want them to have knowledge of gun safety and whatnot).

With the US being the way that it is, this will always be a contentious subject, and I hope people can debate it in a civil manner.  Some people will want to own weapons for reasons that may not be apparent to other areas of the country/globe, and that's okay. Sure, we can talk about the potential other effects to that ownership, but most people aren't making this acquisition lightly, and they don't deserve to be derided for it.  Unless they're sitting around talking about the cool new sight or grip they got, then eesh - it's a gun, not a collectible toy.

I also wish people can discuss games being on different consoles in a friendly manner, but that might be just me pissing into the wind. Seriously, get the fuck over it. Play what you like where you can.

I can't speak for other posters, only myself, but I'm a black socialist, and I'm not saying "how great guns are". There's a greater discussion about the right of the people to bear arms in a state and should the state have a monopoly on being armed but I'm not even going to bother with that now. The last time I called the cops was because at 6 in the morning someone was beating the shit out of someone in an apartment in the building next door. These are old school NYC storefront/apt building combos, so everything is attached. Because of past incidents I don't call the police unless I had to, but the cries were heartbreaking and the woman I was dating at the time insisted. So I call the cops, get ready to go to work.

Hour later they show up, as opposed to going to where the abuse took place they go to my apartment; I am already gone. She comes down to explain to them what happened and it's next door; instead they give her a hard time to make sure she isn't covering up her own domestic abuse.

Which I understand since many abused people are in that fog, but from her perspective (we are both black) she explained it was less 'Are you hurt maam? is he hurting you?' but 'Stop lying to us, you're wasting our time'. She eventually convinced them I called them to try to help our neighbor, not to report myself (lol), but instead of checking out next door...after all of that they just hopped in their car and drove away without checking up on that apartment.

I never found out what happened to that woman.

So yeah, when the copaganda is like 'We run into danger!!!' its more like a shitty delivery driver...the bare minimum to check off that they tried to do their job. Which is why they arrested the first person they saw here while the domestic abuser was probably going for another round.

On one particularly long ride back from a rural bar, I did hear the distinctive clink of a belt being undone.
