An honest liar, a documentary about James Randi, magician turned hoaxbuster. I knew the man by name (and so you probably if you roamed the skeptic internet) but little beyond that and the activities of his foundation, and it turns out the movie was really good. I liked how tactfully the narrative went from exposing his deeds to his formerly closeted homosexuality, and the portrait of his personal life is both endearing (that's a very energetic 86-year old man) and bring a lot of food for tought to the viewer and opens up new perspectives on his crusading for truth and enlightnement. Only thing I am always a bit weary of is how the film is obviously organising its narrative to have some turns and set-up "twists" (like the recent Sugar Man movie), it always borderlines manipulation in a documentary.

Antman.  I liked it but I like are the Marvel movies.  Very inconsistent and most of the jokes fell short.  Some of the most creative battles though.  I liked the latino dudes stories a lot.

The Warriors

Really liked it. Some really great action. Some (really) weak acting and dialog in parts, but it's sort of charming in a way. It was a simple, stripped-down narrative that didn't try to do anything outlandish or crazy, and I appreciated that. (Though, from what I hear about the later "Ultimate Director's Cut"... uhh, yeah. :lol)

The Director's Cut adds a intro that explains that the movie is based on Anabasis, and has comic book panel transitions between scenes. They don't detract from the movie too much, but they're still pointless and dumb and I wish Paramount would release the original version on Blu-Ray.

The DC adds comic-book style scene transitions and ups the focus on the Greek mythos angle. Doesn't ruin the movie by any stretch, by it's all just pointless additions that don't need to be there.

The funniest thing about the Warriors DC is Walter Hill trying to justify it in intro.

Don't mind director's cut and special editions and all that sort of stuff. It generally just sparks discussion imo which is a good thing.

Recently watched this btw

http://definitivehobbitcut.tumblr.com/

It's basically the three hobbit films cut into one to try to approximate the pacing and sense of the book.

It doesn't really work because obviously its almost impossible to recut something in a major manner and still try to maintain correct movie style pacing and flow without access to material that can ease the transitions or the original source filming.

But as a thought exercise its interesting, and I think the overall goal is often more correct than those hobbit movies. (Have only seen the first two. Will get around to the third but haven't seen it yet)

It's a tough thing to do and I sort of sympathize with Peter Jackson more than I did originally. Even beyond just the money motive, there is probably a great temptation to try to make the hobbit, this grand movie scale thing that foretells all that lord of the rings stuff and put your own stamp on it.

I don't think it works for the most part at least in the first two films (Peter Jackson movies I mean), but then I'm not the biggest Tolkien guy in the world so my opinion matters very little.

I think the decision to do 3 movies was WB's decision more than anything (combined with PJ wanting all his friends to have jobs for a few years.) The source material certainly didn't lend itself to three movies at all, 2 was OK but still pushing it.

From what I remember, it was originally just going to be two movies [and I think the second was supposed to be partially a bridge between The Hobbit and LOTR], but at some point it ended up being three movies instead [with not much of bridge between the two trilogies]. That decision was almost certainly made by WB and wad done because they didn't want to leave $1 billion on the table.

I really wish del Toro could have stuck around and been able to do his version of The Hobbit, but it's understandable that he didn't want to wait around for however long it took MGM to get their mess sorted out.

Yeah, it was supposed to be two (the second originally titled "There and Back Again"), and I agree pushing it to three was mostly WB's doing.

I wish del Toro would make fucking something*. He talks and talks and hems and haws and announces all this shit. I'm not believing Pacific Rim 2 until I see a trailer.

* I guess that new horror movie of his looks a'ight. :larry

I am planning on watching it, and I'm glad to hear it's good. Documentaries are always subjective though. So's the news. We would all love if documentaries were these perfect little objective fact repositories, but just the fact that a filmmaker is passionate enough to want to make a documentary speaks volumes of inherent bias.

To be clear, if it is what you are addressing, I understand that by default a documentary will set up a narrative of some form and makes choices at to what is shown or not, and when. What bothers me most is when documentary are obviously setting up "twists" for the viewer as if the director genuinely found something midway through filming, in an effort to conform to a standard fiction narrative template. I named Sugar Man because it was heavy handed in creating a mistery that probably never was one for the crew to be a more exciting film overall. I had less issues with an Honest Liar.

The master at what I would consider as honest documentary is obviously Depardon.

From skimming over a few review snippets, it sounds like most of the movie is build-up and then it ends. Which is pretty much the same major issue that the FF movie from 2005 had.

Especially when it's an origin story that has been told multiple times in the last decade. Everyone knows Spiderman's story, we don't need to see it again in the next 1-2 years. If you want a teenage Spiderman go ahead...but what's the point of showing him get bit by the spider and all that shit? We already know. Shit is wack...

There is one interesting thing to come out of this: anyone interested in filmmaking can use that as a reference to study different time periods and directorial styles, since the scene plays out very similarly among all versions.

As I grow old, the whole "meta" (whatever that bullshit means) trick seems less and less like a smart trick and more of an easy and cynical cop out. It's pretty much the equivalent of fake self depreciation. Actually have the balls to stand behind your fiction and to assume your choices, assholes.

New Nightmare was OK for the few I remember of it and not the worst use of the post modern schtick, but all said and done it's a pretty boring horror movie.

yeah, Dream Warriors is sa'rite.

part 2 is sorta great for being remarkably gay, New Nightmare is pretty clever I thought for a sequel/remake/reboot of the first (pretty great) installment. 4-6 are good only for some nice Clown-Freddy parts. The series is so wonderfully malleable, the remake was so tremendously disappointing for being so slavish while being inferior to the film it was remaking. Where most slasher series can get stale, Freddy can only run out of ideas if people stop falling asleep. I'll bet anybody here can come up with a semi-decent elevator pitch with only a few minutes of thought behind it.

-Freddy at a high-achieving, Ivy league college with kids who are already cracking up from academic/social pressure.
-Freddy haunts a VA-psychiatric care hospital, going up against young, shell shocked veterans from the ongoing wars.
-Freddy hits skid row, taking out impoverished young and homeless people and its been going on for years because nobody takes note of such things.

anything but another frigging 90% similar remake or origin story FFS.

Biggest failing of the remake was all this focus on Freddy and his past instead of the kids. He was a murdering pedo y'all, we don't need to sympathize with him okay and making the fact that he did do awful shit into an awful twist was dumb.

Like hyper said all you need for a solid reboot/sequel is interesting visual gags/deaths and a bunch of horny teenagers or twenty somethings trying to stay awake for a long weekend.

Cast bunch of pretty people
Hire a director known for strong visuals
???
