2001’s Josie And The Pussycats, today’s ill-fated My Year Of Flops entry, proposed a much more plausible answer: Bands like its Backstreet Boys surrogate Du Jour (of “Backdoor Lover” fame) were the product of a sinister government program to pump money into the economy by putting subliminal messages into inane pop songs designed to get impressionable, weak-minded teens to spend their allowances on the hottest new fad. It was an awfully satirical slant for a feature-film adaptation of an Archie spin-off/Hanna-Barbera cartoon/1970s bubblegum group, the lattermost featuring a young Cheryl Ladd. To the film’s detractors, of which there were many, it must have looked like writer-directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan were hurling rocks at their satirical targets from an awfully translucent house.

i saw kick-ass...

it was good, but not as good as i had hoped. instead of being a tongue-in-cheek counter cultural movie, it was more of a vanilla super hero movie with a few twists. also the moral ambiguity was relatively ignored instead of built upon. kind of like district 9, it was a fun romp, but it was less intelligent than i had hoped.

i also rewatched the constant gardener. it's fucking great, and it's just as applicable today as it was 5 years ago. great acting, great story, great movie.

I just finished watching Coraline with my niece. It started out slow, but it ended up creeping me out in a good way. If I had kids who complained a lot, I'd make them watch it.

I also finally saw Hangover two nights ago with a friend. It's one of the few comedies I've seen that actually live up to the hype. Galifianakis was the true star of this movie.

In 2006 investigators discovered Pearlman had perpetrated a long running Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors out of $300 million. For more than 20 years Pearlman enticed individuals and banks to invest in Trans Continental Airlines Travel Services Inc. and Trans Continental Airlines Inc., both of which existed only on paper. Pearlman used falsified FDIC, AIG and Lloyd's of London documents to win investors' confidence in his "Employee Investment Savings Account" (E.I.S.A.) program and he used fake financial statements created by a fictitious accounting firm Cohen and Siegel to secure bank loans.

Following a brief flight from officials, Pearlman was arrested in Indonesia on June 14, 2007 after being spotted by a German tourist couple.

On May 21, 2008, Pearlman was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison, after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and making false statements during a bankruptcy proceeding. U.S. District Judge G. Kendall Sharp gave Pearlman the chance to cut his prison time, by offering to reduce the sentence by one month for every million dollars he helps a bankruptcy trustee recover. He also ordered individual investors are to be paid before institutions in distributing any eventual assets.

The two-dimensional characters, the crappy fantasy elements, the plot, the mix between fantasy and real events. I liked some of it but I'm leaning on "don't like".

I think my biggest problem with the movie are the characters. The villian kicks puppies and eats cats for breakfast; he's a terrible man, I get it. About every single character in the movie comes off like some Merry Melodies caricature, and have the depth of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 7, 2010 – Columbia Pictures announced today that Men in Black III will be released in 3D on May 25, 2012. Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are returning to produce and Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two installments of the blockbuster franchise, will direct the film from a screenplay written by Etan Cohen, based on the comic book by Lowell Cunningham. Steven Spielberg is set to executive produce.

Deals are set for Will Smith, Sonnenfeld and the producing team to return to the blockbuster franchise with the intent to begin production by this fall and the studio is in advanced negotiations with Tommy Lee Jones to reprise his role as Agent Kay. Josh Brolin is also in talks to star as a young Agent Kay.

Commenting on the announcement, Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution said, “Sony’s summer of 2012 will get off to a red hot start with an incredible new 3D adventure for the Men in Black. We couldn’t be more excited that the original filmmaking team responsible for the first two worldwide hits is reuniting for this third installment. Reminds me of MAF's argument against The Fountain, which he said was advertised as a time travelin' flick, hence his disappointment in the actual movie. That makes more sense than you're argument.

And the emotional depth of the story presented is stunted due to how conventional it all is: imagination and magic have no place in the real world, wow like I've never heard that one before. It feels like Del Toro took out an anthology of dark fantasy tropes and infused into Pan's. The result is a sterile, highly conventional and flat out generic movie aside from the visuals and cinematography which are great.

I liked the drama between Ofelia and her mother though.

Universal is making a deal to finance and distribute The Man With The Iron Fists, a stylized martial arts film that will mark the feature directorial debut of RZA, the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder who has written the screenplay with Eli Roth. RZA will play the title character, a blacksmith who forges weapons for the inhabitants of a village in feudal China. They are forced to defend themselves, and before you know it, everybody is kung fu fighting.

Roth will produce with Strike Entertainment's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman. RZA will also produce the soundtrack. The film shoots in September in Hong Kong at a budget under $20 million.

Roth, the Hostel helmer who made an acting splash playing the Bear Jew in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, doesn't know if he will bring his baseball bat and play a part in this film, but said that Iron Fists was forged under the creative godfathering of Tarantino and has the stylized period vibe present in Kill Bill

"It started with a trip RZA and I took with Quentin to Iceland in 2005," Roth said. "We flew back, ended up snowed in in Boston, staying at my parents' house in Newton. Turned out that my dad and RZA grew up in Brooklyn and went to the same Brownsville  junior high school and swam in the same public pool. He hooked me on his dream of directing and reinventing the Kung Fu movie genre. It reminded me of my love of horror. RZA went to the set of Kill Bill, and got a master directing course from Quentin. Nothing was happening with the script, and I formed this company, Arcade, with Eric Newman, that made Last Exorcism, a film that comes out in August through Lionsgate. We were looking for projects and I suggested RZA's script. I wrote the latest draft with him. While I was away shooting Inglourious Basterds, RZA went to China to shoot test footage on his own, with all the choreography. It was very visual and I think he will bring to life a script that mixes kung fu with a spaghetti Western mindset and a hip hop

"RZA has imagined every tribe, every fighting style, every costume," Roth said. "He knows kung fu like I know horror."

I just hope this results in some good music. RZA has been in a rut for some time (well imo), getting back to kung fu might pull him out.

And it'll be interesting hearing him actually do a soundtrack. I remember watching Kill Bill and thinking "oh shit RZA did most of this? Badasss." Then of course I found out he basically just picked the songs for the film, and did like one or two tracks.
