Meh who cares about this childish crap now that we have game of thrones :tophat

The added back in the scene that the publishers forced Tolkien to cut where Bilbo inviso-rapes Gandalf while Golum watches.

I like the British lady's turn from "he's cute in a little brother, scrappy dog way" to "bang me" once he becomes a beefy man hunk.

I like that Tony Stark's dad is "bang me" once he becomes a beefy man hunk.

Saw Nowhere Boy, the John Lennon biopic starring the guy from Kick-Ass. Only, I didn't know it was the guy from Kick-Ass, and I spent half the movie trying to figure out where I'd seen him. Very good acting, all around, particularly for Lennon's "two mothers."

Vengeance and La Femme Nikita

more foreign thrillers. Vengeance is alright for the first half but there's this really weird shoot-out near the end that takes place in a garbage field with dudes pushing big blocks of compressed paper at each other for cover. it's kinda dumb but kinda cool at the same time. mostly kinda dumb though. they use lost memory as a plot device for the main character and it's not really well done. super hokey. decent movie overall 6.5/10

Never seen Nikita before today. i enjoyed it but i'm spoiled by modern action tropes that clearly were clearly aped from this. my favorite scene was in the middle where Nikita has to perform a mission while he boyfriend is in the other room asking her question. really tense scene with a good payoff. i felt the ending was a little abrupt as the mission that preceded it didn't seem like the big finale. pretty good. 7.5/10

I couldn't finish Vengeance.  The premise is fine, but it's super hokey once it starts moving along.

Insidious

when it was released i figured it was nothing more than another shitty mainstream "horror" movie. the fact that Saw director James Wan did it definitely caused for some pause but judged the book by it's (awful) cover and the fact that it's PG-13.

then i started hearing around that it was actually pretty good. that it's a well shot suspense/thriller with really well done atmosphere and tension.

gotta say, I was flat out wrong in my prejudices.

the first act follows a lot of "haunted family" tropes that you would expect. family moves into new house - bad shit starts going down. you've been there before. it's in the clever sound design, and camera design where it stands out. there's even a scene where the mother hears things coming out of a baby monitor. these kind of tropes are well known as i mentioned but they are used constantly because they work and if a director can play it just right he can manage to do something good with it. in Insidious it works and works well. in a scary movie, the one thing that always does it for me is holding off on a payoff until the tension is crazy high. here we see plenty of scenes that play the chord long enough to the point where the typical payoff point has nearly been passed and now you have no idea where it's going to actually happen.

up until the second act or so i was really enjoying everything about the film. then it kind of lost me a little bit. movies like these tend to follow a few different paths. here we see the family attempting to reach out for "professional" help ALA Poltergeist. It's during this section of the movie that it's revealed what's going on and initially it did nothing but result in me rolling my eyes. i was legit surprised however when the film revealed a set of clues that i had to go back and confirm where actually there the entire time but are missed because they are simply in the backround. i really appreciate stuff like that. set design that ends up being relevant. also the design of the "bad guy" is amazing and pretty horrifying IMO.

Rolling into the third act I was pretty much back on board 100% because the movie dives head first into "SUPER HAUNTED HOUSE" territory and it's awesome. there's rolling mist, creepy apparitions, crazy demons, and kind of hilarious seance scene with a great payoff.

i'm rambling a lot. blah blah

TL;DR - the movie is a well shot and tension filled horror movie that manages to be scary in spite of it's PG-13 rating. really really enjoyed it.

8/10

last night before i went to bed i round out my movie marathon weekend with

edit.. wtf. in progress

The Adjustment Bureau

it was alright. it was a very light and breezy kinda sci-fi thriller. the dudes in the fedora's were awesome, especially John Slattery. There's some real good framing in the adventurey sequences with people running/getting chased. i LOVED the scene where the dudes are chasing Matt Damon and John Slattery is trying to prevent him from getting to the girl and he reaches out his hand to grab a door but his fedora falls off. I dunno - something about the way that scene was cut together got a big smile out of me.

i think the biggest strength in the movie is the chemistry between Damon and Blunt. Really the entire movie hinges on this chemistry so thankfully it's believable.

it's not classic sci-fi by any means but it's well done and pretty fun all the way through. definitely worth a watch

Watched Unfaithfully Yours on netflix.  Written and directed by Preston Sturges it's a very black comedy about a man who thinks his wife is cheating on him and the fantasies he concocts of how he will confront her.  It's not very funny, but it is very droll.

I'm behind the times but I saw Serenity - OMFG.  Since that was so good I watched the first episode of Firefly - OMFG.  They were so awesome I finally found a reason to buy a blu ray player.  Can't believe Firefly got canned after just one season.  :'(  It's like the most entertaining scifi I've seen since SG1 and Atlantis.

Also saw the jap horror Dark Water.  Pretty enjoyable, and they did a great job at creating suspense by only letting you see glimpses of the ghost.  Lots of scary movies seem to lose all suspense because they show way too much of the "scary thing".  Let down slightly at the end by what should be a scary scene but is actually a little funny.

The Nothing Men - really awesome Aussie film, pretty darn sad.  It's probably impossible to rent or buy outside Australia but it's on veehd.com if anyone is interested.

The American - I loved it.  The deliberate pacing was awesome.  Looking online afterwards I see it was advertised as a Bourne-like experience.  No wonder people were disappointed.

Ghost Writer - Bitchin'.  The last Roman Polanski "mystery" I saw was the Ninth Gate, and I felt a bit let down by its ending.  Ghost Writer had no such problem, pretty riveting all the way though.  It had a steady pace as well which I liked.

Red Riding Hood - I suppose it was OK for the fantasy/adventure type of film.  I never seem to be engaged with most films in this genre (like Brothers Grimm,  Sleepy Hollow).  Maybe it's because they're just not very good.

http://www.nme.com/filmandtv/news/harrison-ford-calls-shia-labeouf-a-fucking-idiot/220914

Quote
The pair appeared together in latter-day sequel Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, but LaBeouf later spoke out against the film, saying he and director Steven Spielberg "dropped the ball".

Now Ford has lambasted his screen son for his comments. He told Details: "I think he was a fucking idiot. As an actor, I think it's my obligation to support the film without making a complete ass of myself. Shia is ambitious, attentive, and talented - and he’s learning how to deal with a situation which is very unique and difficult."

It can and will.

That being said, the idea of Shia lambasting Indy still makes me shake my head even though he was correct. The film sucked, but this is the same guy who seems to think the Transformers films are good.

Prometheus plot:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Earth. Year 2058.

Archaeological digs in Africa reveal alien artifacts that humans were genetically engineered by a advanced alien race (space jockeys). These "Alien Gods" also terraformed Earth in order to make it habitable for their human creations. Amongst finds are coordinates to the Alien God's home-world, to Paradise. Months later the Weyland Corp launch the spaceship PROMETHEUS and his crew, into deep space to make first contact. Thanks to faster than light travel a few years later the PROMETHEUS enters the Zeta Riticuli star system. Humans are greeted by their makers, then transported further into space to a scary yet fascinating world. The Alien Gods are proud of their "children", their first creation to reach such levels of intelligence.

As a reward they share bits of their astonishing bio-based technologies with the humans. But for one crew member of the Prometheus it's not enough. In a treacherous act he steals the "bio-source code" to Terraforming, a technology at the origin of all Gods' power, that could make humans equal to the gods. The Alien Gods may be scientists but are also ruthless conquerors, destroyers of worlds who will not accept humans as equals. They unleash on the escaping human crew their favorite bio-weapon, a creature used to "clean up" worlds before colonization. But something goes wrong in the process and humans manage to turn the bio-weapon against their makers. Giving birth to a smarter, nastier, bigger breed of gut eating creatures. Creatures that will be the demise of Paradise. What's left of the Prometheus crew manages to escape the doomed planet.

On their trail a survivor Alien God in very familiar ship with one ultimate mission.

Bring the wrath of the Gods to Earth.
[close]

Ridley Scott's confirmation:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
“The (space) journey, metaphorically, is about a challenge to the gods. NASA and the Vatican agree that is almost mathematically impossible that we can be where we are today without there being a little help along the way. That’s what we’re looking at (in the film), at some of Eric van Daniken’s ideas of how did we humans come about.”

Vanishing on 7th street

I enjoyed it. Was suitably creepy and interesting the characters still did dumb as fuck things but that comes with the territory with these films
the general plot is john leguizamo is a cinema projectionist. While showing a film to a packed screen the light in the the building go off and we hear screaming then silence.

We see inside the screen and clothes and shoes lay strewn across the seats it's inhabitants having disappeared. Along the way he hooks up with Thandie Newton and Hayden Christensen and two little kids. As they try to find a way out of the city.

I really liked the idea of creepy shadow people really added a chilling feeling whenever a character found themselves in near dark and they started to appear. Well worth a watch.

THOR!

Pretty damn good! Hemsworth is a star, serious charisma. Hiddleston was great too. In about 5 years (when he is a bit more grizzled), he could be perfect for Jack Reacher, if any films ever get made. He'll be tied up with Thor 2 and Avengers etc for years anyway.

The plot was a bit odd and I doubt it will be all that rewatchable but I can live with it. More Warriors Three next time! And Beta Ray Bill!

Yep Hemsworth made that film his. Only reason i went to see it a second time was because of him.

Really looking forward to the Avengers now.  :-*

How long until we get a Booster Gold movie?

I nominate Aaron Eckhart for Booster Gold and Tom Cruise for Max Lord.

I wasn't sure how it would be compared to the bitchin' Swedish version, but I liked them both equally.  Awesome films.
