Captain America 2 was pretty good. In some ways these stand alone movies start feeling like mid-season episodes biding time until the bombastic season finale with Avengers 2. But Captain America came off way more betterer and badasser and cooler in this than in The Avengers or the first one. In general it does a better job balancing and showcasing the different characters than Avengers did. Really great action throughout.

some small stuff I liked about it (spoilers for captain america 2 and iron man 3)

no one cared about the council members dying. considering that they wanted to nuke new york, it was nice that they went out without redemption or fanfare.

one of the targets for the the person of interest genocide computer thing was president william sadler, which explains why SHIELD or Captain America weren't involved with Iron Man 3. the computer also calls out doctor strange, (possibly) amadeus cho, and shows the rebuilt avengers tower.

Moreover, when these complementary characters die, it becomes hard to feign any semblance of sympathy for them making them just another statistic to add to the film's ridiculously high blood count. The visuals were indeed quite breathtaking at times, and I have a feeling they would have been even more awe-inspiring in 3D, but this still can't make up for the steps back in plot devices and execution. 5/10
Nah the 3D was pretty crappy. It was one of those movies where the effect is gone after 5 minutes

Well that's disappointing, should have just made it a sadomasochistic softcore porn film, starring Eva Green.

Jodorowsky's Dune was pretty great. I don't know if his Dune project was quite as influential as the movie tries to suggest, but nevertheless it was super entertaining watching such a passionate man tell this story.

just got back from 'Violence - The Movie' AKA The Raid 2, and its pretty darn awesome.

Maybe its not as contained and well paced as its predecessor, but you'd have to be petty and churlish to say that it detracts from the film all that much once the action does get going. Hoo boy, does it ever get going. So the story isn't quite as interesting as the filmmakers want it to be, so that's kind of a wash, but, and this is a huge but, the action is really the thing and it does not disappoint, not even a little bit. There's so much hugely violent, inventive, well shot bloody chaos here that The Raid 3 will have to be some kind of slasher/martial arts hybrid to keep pace.

Seriously, 'Violence - The Movie', is a more accurate title, maybe 'Fun Violence' would be good too.

Wake In Fright - Horrifying film about Australian masculinity. Contains footage of an actual kangaroo hunt which was pretty traumatic. Certainly worth a watch.

We Are What We Are - basically a fucked up family drama. the film goes through some great lengths to conceal what it's about while the first line of all the marketing material just gives it away. This is a remake of a Mexican film which I haven't seen so I can't comment on which is better, but I really dug it. Very explosive ending. Really dug it.

Knights of Badassery
I had much higher hopes for this movie. I expected a comedy which poked fun at geeks, RPGs, and LARPs, while having a horror theme running through it. Instead, it was all over the map, comedy, romance, drama, spun around a slasher movie which ends with a really cheesy resolution.

Addition: Dinklage's part is, not surprisingly, less central than is implied in the trailers. His screen time is less than I'd hoped for, and there are some character threads for him which are abandoned (as there are for each character). Side note: It's hard to write each of these criticisms without using the word "short"; "cut short," "falls short," "given short shrift," etc.

I know there's a lead-in for the cheesy-but-largely-played-straight finale, but it really surprised me that the big resolve involved straying from LARP/RPG elements and a callback to an earlier, one-off scene played for laughs.

I haven't seen the remake but the Mexican version is very good too. It does a really great job of driving the survival aspect of it and what it would take to live that life.

The Raid 2 was pretty amazing.

The plot was pretty predictable, but not in an offensive way. It never lingers on the cliches it has. The movie itself is just oozing with style and personality. Like there is just so many cool shots and personal touches to all the characters that make them memorable and entertaining. Like the evil assassin group don't have much character, but they are handled in a way-given something that makes them stands out- that really makes you feel that the people making the thing care.

It has a slow start I think, but at the same time I was never bored. The action is pretty amazing.

Pacific Rim isn't camp. Camp is supposed to be funny/ironic because of how ridiculous it was. Pacific Rim was very sincere. It's made to be a modern day version of older kaiju films/tv shows. I can totally understand how someone might not dig it though.

Patlabor: The Next Generation Episodes 0 and 1 -- Caught this in a theater while in Tokyo last week. Very much a character driven piece like the TV series. Episode 0 goes through and tells you what happened to all the characters from the animated TV, OVA and movies. Episode 1 is mostly about the new team and dealing with them waiting for anything to happen. The Labor doesn't even move until the very end of Episode 1. The movie itself was ok, but my Japanese-theater-going experience was interesting.

Definitely sincere. Del Toro was not trying to be hokey or cheesy. He was trying to recreate a certain genre that generally had writing and characters filled to the brim with tropes.

He confirms this over and over again during the commentary for the movie too. Like I said, totally understandable if it's not your cup of tea. It's a fan service movie to the core.

Yeah, Mup's right. Batman '66, Police Squad, Hairspray, Austin Powers are camp. Pacific Rim's like the Speed Racer movie: the audience is asked for a bit more suspension of disbelief than usual, so they can watch characters playing it straight within a fairly cartoonish world/plot setup. In both cases a lot of people aren't going to buy in, at which point there's really no chance the movie's going to work for them.

Man, I've got serious nerd boner for how great the characters look. The Sentinels look great as well, but then again I liked Morrison's cell-sized Sentinels, and all the weird variants that have been out there.

Not a huge surprise. The trailers looked better when they were stitching together high-budget visuals and letting our imaginations fill in the gaps. The more they show of the actual movie, the more it's going to look like what it is: a fairly standard superhero flick.

Absolute worst case scenario, it gave us some really excellent bromancing between McKellan and Stewart.

Before he was captured and had adamantium bonded to his skeleton, turning him into weapon x, wolverine had regular old bones. Part of the movie is set in the past.

I like that the big dumb noisy action scene seems like it'll be at the start/future. The third acts of these comic and action movies have been dull with how much stuff they throw at you.

I also like that the future scenes look like the future war of terminator 2. blue and drab.

The Weapon X program took place in the 90's according to X-2 IIRC. Most of these scenes are 70's/80's.

That may be why, but also I'm not sure if Wolvie is psychically being sent back in time. Kitty isn't in the original story and I doubt he is. Even in the movie timeline which dosen't make much sense, he dosen't get his metal claws until the 80s. So he wouldn't have metal claws anyway. Though, if he is physically being sent back then again he wouldn't have metal claws because of the events of his last movie.

Logan in the future probably has bone claws because of what happen in The Wolverine.

In the original DOFP Kitty Pryde is the one sent back in time, but she is not psychically sent back. With the help of the son of Reed Richards and Rachel Summers(a psychic) they send the older Kitty Pryde's mind back into the past where she takes over the then young Kitty Pryde's mind.

Seeing as how Xavier is back and seems to be pretty important in sending back wolvie, I'm not sure they are physically sending him back. He may be sending his mind back into the then younger Wolvie. The Wolvie of the 70s wouldn't have metal claws.

His consciousness from the future is sent back into his body from the past, from what I've read.

In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we see Wolvie get his adamantium lacing, and by extension (pun intended), his claws, in a fairly recent scenario; maybe the '80s or '90s. In The Wolverine, he loses his claws to the Silver Samurai, and that's essentially a 2010+ setting. So the actual length of time he has adamantium claws is quite limited, in the movie continuity.

There's also the possibility that there's another explanation waiting for us in DoFP.

Saw The Raid 2 the other night and it's great... Pretty much the first one outdoors and with even more insane choreographed violence, which is exactly what I wanted. I don't care if Rama is done with fighting, we need Raid 3.

I have also just got back from a UK preview showing of The Amazing Spiderman 2. I loved it... I think it's probably better than any of the Raimi movies. The villains are written in a very unsubtle way, but that helps add to the comic relief. Still has the same romance angst stuff that permeated the first movie but when it comes to the fights and harsher moments it doesn't pull any punches. It's rated 12A here, which sucks, because my Spiderman loving nephew would love the shit out of this movie. Spiderman has some awesome playful sass, and the kid from Chronicle / Place Beyond the Pines is one creepy fucker as Harry Osborne. For some reason, some lines spoken in UK trailers weren't actually in the movie at all. Sets up nice for Part 3!

The only real problem is the character development, it seems to happen is some weird vacuum without external stimuli. Not the best DC movie but not the worst. The Dick problems you were worried about isnt really a problem since :
