Being the best X-Men movie since United is a really low bar.  Like really low.

I'll say this though, I wish more Superhero movies would go the route of The Wolverine (despite its faults) and just make a fun self contained comic run instead of forcing the whole weight of the universe on every movie.

Yes yes yes.  Wish more people would make a fuss about this than the endless grimdark vs. comic-y warz.  I enjoyed Winter Soldier, but it's become mandatory to put the fate/survival of humanity on the line several times each summer, which kind of takes away the impact.

I mean, kaiju movies, that's sort of baked in.  But when the climax is going to involve a high-powered fistfight anyways?  You can afford to scale it back a bit.

Agreed. I have a fear that this whole "bigger and more epic" stuff that studios are doing is going to blow up in their faces (sorta like AAA gaming.)

worst recent example of more and biggerer in these blockbuster action movies is amazing spider-man 2
spoiler (click to show/hide)
spider-man can't just be stopping electro.  let's have two planes about to crash! no one from the movie will be on those planes, or in the control tower, and spider-man isn't aware of the planes...but it adds stakes to the finale!
[close]

and as entertaining as Winter Soldier was the ending felt like a video game.  like they wrote actual video game objectives into the script, including a scene where cap eats trash to regain hp.

It's funny too, because they've gone down this bigger and betterer road before with Spider-Man 3 and that movie was universally panned to the point they had to reboot the franchise. let's do it again just to make sure I guess?

Quote
Not since 2003's "X2: X-Men United" has this filmmaker tapped so effortlessly into his talent for comicbook gravitas, his ability to mine emotional resonance, pop poetry and (crucially) sly humor.

Quote
Bryan Singer keeps things moving along briskly enough that you can just go along with the ride of Superhero Stuff without getting bogged down in the labyrinthine plotting if you don't want to.

Quote
The epic and exciting X-Men: Days of Future Past is the biggest & best entry in the franchise since X2.

Quote
Even if Singer never makes one of these again, he can leave knowing that he delivered something that showed real growth, something that makes me think this series has plenty of stories left to tell.

Quote
That it all makes sense and is up there with the best X-movies is actually quite uncanny.

Quote
With style, heart and thrills, Singer has nailed the most ambitious X-flick yet. Popcorn pizzazz combines with X2's emotional sweep and something extra: a platform for the X-Men's screen survival.

Quote
Striking in its ambition, assured in its execution, and compelling throughout.

Quote
The best, most complete and most entertaining X-Men movie we've ever seen.

Yeah Amazing Spider man 2 was pretty funny. That airplane crap was just really hacky. It's like wasn't saving the city enough? No, we need to add just one more stake to this!

The movie was just a bunch of ideas with no cohesion to it.

Speaking of awesome child molesters, everyone needs to check out Polanski's Carnage from a few years back.  It's basically Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, and Christopher Waltz in a single room arguing for 70 minutes.  It's dark and funny and mean.

Yeah, that was definitely the thing I hated the most in the movie.

yeah, it's one of those moments you don't get why they made so complicated.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Superman '78-   Superman's dad dies from a heart attack.  Superman, with all his power, can't save him.

Man of Steel-  Superman has a fight with his dad.  A tornado comes out of nowhere.  Superman's dad tells Superman no to help because if people knew the government would take him or something.  Everyone is safe...but then they notice the dog is trapped!!  Superman wants to save the dog, which he could've done without superpowers.  Instead Superman's dad, an old fat man with limp, runs to free the dog.  Superman wants to save his dad using superpowers.  But as a last act to show he'll listen to his dad, Superman lets his father get killed in a tornado? or something? and then it's revealed that Superman has been going around the world, saving people, and leaving...so he explicitly ignores his father's wishes.
