Yeah that definitely sounds like a case of a writer's fetishes making their way to the page.

Watched Jaws 2 because why not...   :doge

So, much like The Predator or something Jaws is a movie that could never produce a good sequel in any timeline unless its just a reboot of the first movie so you judge it on a scale relative to that.

As far as the good....

I think maybe the best part of the movie or at least theoretically the best thing decision wise was to turn Roy Scheider into an obsessed paranoid shark ptsd survivor. I think that's potentially an interesting area to mine and I would have went even further with it than the movie does. Almost like turn it into vertigo or something. That would have at least been different.

As far as the bad....

Everything else. So you have no Quint, no hooper, so you don't really have anybody interesting other than Scheider. So you replace them with about a dozen super annoying terribly acting teenagers. Not good. I couldn't remember if I'd ever seen this movie before but all those god damn kids made me remember that I had in fact had.

With no Spielberg directing, the movie now looks like crap and feels like a TV movie of the week rather than a motion picture. Apparently the budget for the first movie was 9 million dollars. The budget for Jaws 2 was 30 million and that's amazing when you look at the two films.

Apparently one of the original ideas was a prequel based on the story quint tells in Jaws.

Quote
Howard Sackler, who had contributed to the first film's script but chose not to be credited, was charged with writing the first draft. He originally proposed a prequel based on the sinking of the USS Indianapolis, the story relayed by Quint in the first film. Although Universal president Sidney Sheinberg thought Sackler's treatment for the film was intriguing, he rejected the idea.

That also would have been a more interesting thing than what Jaws 2 ended up being.

Jaws 2 isn't horrible. It's mainly just a super mediocre thing that feels like it was made for money which it was and which is the case with nearly every sequel.

Now I have to decide if I want to watch the next two awful ones. I'm pretty sure I have never actually ever seen those ones before my self.

Eh the prequel might have been good but it also could have easily just been pointless, like The Thing 2011.

i was gonna post this after you mentioned how indifferent you were on it, and i held out cuz i shouldn't be such a negative nancy, but god, i hate the thing prequel so much. when i saw it i had just moved out to seattle and didn't know anyone, and i didn't have shit to do so i figured hey, i'll go see this. i wasn't expecting a lot, but i had followed the production vaguely and knew they were going to touch on some of the stuff from the OG and that they were using practical effects again. i hadn't heard the latter was cut out by the time i got to the theater, so i kept waiting for the dogshit CGI to stop and it never did. the movie itself sucking ass was compounded by one of the worst theater experiences i'd ever had, with a really drunk couple behind me talking the whole time (presumably, i moved seats after 20 minutes) while the dude was dipping and also being flanked by two different groups of teenagers. i went to a late showing too, so i couldn't even get a decent bottle by the time the theater let out and had to settle for beer.

that was the moment i went full 'burn em down' stoklasa style in my attitude towards theaters

When I saw Coco, I was the only person in my row during the trailers. Then a couple came in and SAT RIGHT NEXT TO ME like a couple of uncivilized heathens.

But it worked out, cause the girl in the couple was audibly surprised by the plot twists and spent the last 5-10 minutes of the movie and the end credits snuffle-crying, which really added to the experience.

As we previously reported, Warner Bros. and DC are developing a “new origins” banner that’s separate from the current DCEU as we know it. This allows multiple actors to play multiple versions of certain characters, with no overlap.

Plowing through the Nolan 4K box and only Batman Begins, Inception and The Prestige are left.

The OLED black levels in The Dark Knight  :noah

The universe shots in Interstellar  :lawd

The HDR plane fights in Dunkirk  :holeup

Anne Hathaway wearing leather in 4K  :dizzy

So now that I've dipped my toes in 4K HDR goodness I'm looking for more.
Any movies that look particularly great in 4K? Any I should avoid?

Unfriended: Dark Web was definitely better than the original and more what I wanted from that one. It’s kinda ridiculous and I was surprised how long the movie takes until it starts killing people, but that’s for the better & worse. It actually gives a nice long suspense thriller build up that’s satisfying, downside is you get rushed kills that are whatever. Overall was satisfied as a popcorn matinee. It’s also pretty dark!

Did a double feature of Unfriended Dark Web & Sorry to Bother You. The latter was pretty cool. Very funny and felt like Clockwork Orange x Office Space to me. Liked the music and lotta good people in it. Neat artsy story.

So like hours later I'm still thinking about Unfriended Dark Web. Horror movies don't normally stick with me, even good ones like Hereditary, but the more I think about it the more I think the script for Dark Web was pretty good. Like yes, it's from the point of view of SUPER HACKERS ARE EVERYWHERE which is a ridiculously exaggerated take on anonymous/.tor/redditt, but once you accept that it's a pretty fucked up solid suspense thriller that's really, really dark/bleak the more you think about it. The movie doesn't really show much violence/gore at all, everything is shown and then cuts off-screen, but to me that makes it more disturbing if you've got a fucked up imagination!

I'd definitely say the movie is recommendable as a horror film. It's not great/amazing but the script and directing is tight enough to make it worth a watch for horror genre fans.

Minor spoilers for Unfriended 2:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also this film is just bleak af. Both Unfriended movies are essentially torture porn films which I'll define as mean-spirited films with no hope at all for the characters. In most horror films, the films try to give the main characters at least a fighting chance, even if it ultimately fails and they all die. But they have some hope and some way to fight back, which will either work or not. Truth or Dare for as shitty as it is, follows this as the main characters investigate the background of the evil TRUTH OR DARE DEMON and try to find a way to seal it. But in both Unfriended movies, it's like "nope" the main characters are just totally outmatched so there is no hope and all you do is watch them die, which to me is torture porn.
[close]

Medium spoilers for Unfriended 2:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unfriended 2 is even more mean-spirited/fucked up than the first one because at least in the first one it's a ghost getting revenge against jerks who filmed an embarrassing video of her and spread it (still not really death-worthy for everyone, but at least it's something against them). In Unfriended 2 it's literally just a group of random people who just through bad luck all get to die horribly. Pretty fucked up!
[close]

Major spoilers for Unfriended 2:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Especially fucked up because all these random people and all the kidnapped girls die horribly for the fun lolz games of essentially a reddit forum. Pretty fucked up movie!

Just watched The Cave (2005), the monster design is pretty interesting, I haven't watched this before and I was surprised by how much one of my other favorites, Pandorum, resembled this movie, has a lot that reminded me of Alien as well. The ending is heavily foreshadowed throughout the movie, however it leaves me with questions regarding intent/danger, can't talk too much about this without spoilers.

For the acting parts, Eddie Cibrian is pretty decent in his role as hot shot, daredevil diver, he has the look and just enough charisma, makes me wonder why he never became a bigger star outside soaps and some dumb tv show currently airing. No clue what Lena Headey's accent is supposed to be, she's unusually subdued in this movie, I guess I expect more from her. The rest of the supporting cast are also great, Daniel Dae Kim does a good job and Morris Chestnut does especially good for me. The other lead Cole Hauser does great throughout, wish he was in more stuff.

I mean you have to have some sort of a story. 90 mins of just monsters fighting each other would get dull after 20 mins. Trailer seems to have plenty.

You're saying this coming from Edwards Godzilla. Pretty sure there's more actual shots of monsters doing shit in that trailer than the entire Edward's film. Now that was a movie that was too much dumb human drama (and off-screen monster battles). This looks much much better and pretty sure shit will go down onscreen.

I get so bummed out when I find a porn star I like and all they do is A2M or I suddenly see "new" videos where they have new tits and tons of tats and know they've been on a drug binge they aren't going to pull out of.

This post works equally well as "oops wrong thread" or as a metaphor for the upcoming slate of big action movies.

The best formula for a Godzilla movie is to have him battling 1 or more other giant monsters with lots of lasers and lightning and buildings made of paper mache exploding
That didn’t work for Final Wars....

Watched Miles Ahead which is the 2015 Miles Davis biopic.

It was mostly a mediocre movie. Cheadle turns in a good performance as Davis but the plot isn't up to it. It basically makes up the main plot line of the movie which never happened to create drama while bouncing between that and the troubled personal life of Miles Davis. It's pretty obvious the main plotline is made up to kind of gin up excitement.

The problem is Miles had a dramatic enough regular life so it wasn't necessary to create the made up plot. Just focus on his life and the up and downs and you have a compelling movie right there. I don't feel like the movie also makes you understand why Miles was such an important music figure. It seems to take it for granted that everybody knows why Miles is important but in a movie, I'm not sure its good to make those assumptions. You have to kind of show it and tell it via the story.

It's not horrible and I didn't hate watching it or anything. At the bare minimum its an excuse to listen to a lot of Miles as background music during a movie. But its also not the kind of movie that is for anybody but hardcore Miles fan because it doesn't do enough to educate the casual fan about Jazz and his place in jazz. And if it doesn't drill deep enough into the life he had to work as strictly a biopic.

Anyway this just gives me an excuse to post Kind of Blue.

Having been in a relationship that imploded spectacularly, this movie was extremely hard to watch. All I could think about is how can one walk back years of bitterness and dissatisfaction, and the reality is you usually can't. The contrast between the beginning and end was simply heartbreaking.

If you want a good claustrophobic cave movie btw watch The Descent, maybe one of my favorite horror movies. Important note: Do NOT watch The Descent 2, it will retroactively ruin the first movie for you, absolutely terrible movie.

Also, if you liked The Descent, there's a slight chance you might like As Above, So Below. Not an amazing movie by any means, but its fun in a Ghost Ship kind of way.

I've also watched As Above, So Below and I really liked it but I'm biased because I really like this kind of movies. Still a pretty good movie imo.

Any impressions of Hotel Artemis? I remember liking the look of the trailer and was considering picking it up until I noticed all the so-so reviews criticizing the pacing and focus for the most part.
