What are your Mission Impossible ratings? Looking forward to seeing Fallout next week.

Mine - 1 > 3 > 5, 4 >>> 2

Something to like in all of 'em. 2 was a really tough rewatch though. Some hilarious scenes. Completely over the top takedowns, a few cool set pieces, motorcycle jousting. Shit movie though. I haven't seen a lot of Woo. Outside of Hard Boiled does he have any must watches?

I heard good things for The Descent but I was legit blown away by it.

The Decent 2 is Highlander II-esque trash.

BEST COMPARISON EVER.

There could be a whole thread on classic movies with terrible sequels, and breaking that down into how many it took to get there, biggest drop off, years between movies, etc.

My vote for all time biggest drop between original and first sequel might be Predator to Predator 2. The drop off from all time classic of its genre to utterly horrible follow up that changed everything that made the original good and involved none of the cast/crew of the original and somehow the series went DOWN from there.

Anyway, I'm watching and giffing ANOES 1 for the first time on an uncompressed bluray file and man, this is really underrated for camera shots and lighting. A lot of it is either too dark or washed out or blurry even on bluray rips due to compression you can find online if you're into breaking the law. I've seen this movie 300 times and am noticing things I've never seen before, or gaining a new appreciation for certain shots.

Predator 2 ain't too hot but it has good bits. Poltergeist 2 is toilet town front to back.

Did you watch that like 6 hour ANOES documentary? It's pretty great and really watchable despite its length.

Huge grain of salt since it seems illogical to cancel two movies that have made it to post production, but who knows, the whole Disney/Fox thing is unprecedented to begin with.

Shame about New Mutants, it looked cool. And this would be the second time a Dark Phoenix movie got fucked over by the studio haha.

I still disagree—Wes has always had airs about him. You can’t deny the similarities between Last House on the Left and The Virgin Spring, for example.

One thing he didn’t frequently have was the budget or support to finish his movies, so maybe this is why you don’t see it.

Also I watched The Serpent and the Rainbow a few days ago, it was OK. Bill Pullman really pulls it together but it's not scary or foreboding enough to be a great horror flick IMO.

Here's what I think:

Wes Craven made a lot of not very good movies, and two classics (New Nightmare, Scream)

Last House is good for a watch, especially because of the Virgin Spring connection.
ANOES is a classic.
Serpent and the Rainbow is almost a classic (this is a case of money running out/producers getting impatient. The last third or so is pretty bad)
People Under the Stairs is a classic (this and Serpent still feel really novel. There isn’t really much like them)
Scream is a classic

New Nightmare falls off a cliff after the first half or so for me. It has a novel start but ends pretty standard.

Oh, I’ll Stan for Swamp Thing. Adrienne Barbeau and Ray Wise? Yes plz.

I thought it was good enough that I didn't feel I wasted my time. The setting was interesting and different enough to make it fresh to me, and honestly Hotel Rwanda scared the piss out of me so I retroactively channeled some of that into my viewing... The mystery of "is it occult, or is it science" fascinated me... until the reveal that the occult shit was real (seriously, why not leave it ambiguous?) And as I said Bill Pullman really drew me in.

IMO it's a very mixed movie.

You don't think ANOES 1 falls off a cliff half way through?

No, man :( I think it’s by far the best movie in the series. It’s at least a yearly watch for me. That and 2 are the only Elm Street flicks that get that honor.

They had to do the ending really quickly—iirc like everything after the return to Haiti was done or written quickly and while shooting, hence it turning into a magic fest.

The ending I was OK with -- Bill Pullman desperately pleading to locals that he's not dead and to not bury him is goddamn haunting.

But the dude's wife getting possessed and attacking him? Shit, I can think of better reasons to get Pullman back to Haiti in 10 minutes than that shit. Keep it ambiguous and creepy. Is it science, or is it supernatural? Riding THAT line is what made the movie so initially compelling.

Idk I really love 2 as well. Gun to my head I won't say it's better than 3, but I enjoy it a lot and have watched it more than 1 and 3 over the past decade.

I'd rather watch 2-6 more than 1 and New Nightmare even if I think New Nightmare is the best overall movie of the series. FvJ still bums me out  :'(

FvJ is objectively a shit movie, but I love it. And I think it did the best with both characters that it could have done considering the circumstances.

And at the VERY least they fought a couple times throughout the movie. Fuck Versus movies that only have a single confrontation at the end.

I liked FvJ the first time I saw it, but I couldn’t make it through a second time.

Honestly, I watch Friday the 13th movies more (and I suppose find them more entertaining) than any of the ANOES movies, and the Friday movies are ALL terrible! I never watch Jason Takes Manhattan or Jason Goes to Hell though.  Those are absolutely not entertaining to watch.

8 and 9 are pretty much unwatchable. 8 at least has those last 20 minutes in Manhattan which are a ton of fun. 9 is straight trash and I will ALWAYS hate it.

My dream in life is to write and/or direct a Friday the 13th movie. I think that could be an achievable goal if I play my cards right.

Ultimately I don't think there was any way that FvJ could have ended up a good movie, but having a director who hadn't seen any of the movies in either series, who took a similar approach to the Child's Play series by not knowing shit about them before directing and completely changing the tone of the series probably didn't help. What you got was like....25% of a shitty F13th movie, 60% of a shitty ANOES movie, 15% early 00s popculture trash that immediately dated it terribly.

Ironically, that 15% of 2000's trash is what makes the movie so compelling and hilarious to rewatch these days. :lol IMO anyways.

I didn’t think the F13 remake was terrible, but it’s a good example of why Hollywood will never get the series right. These movies need to be cheap and trashy. They don’t need characterization or acceptable acting or a narrative. As long as a studio controls the license, the series will never be properly cared for again.

Yeah, I want to stan for a series that has the GOAT horror movie, one of the best slasher sequels, a wholly unrelated film that is probably the third best John Carpenter movie behind Halloween and The Thing (I know he didn't direct it, but Season of The Witch is about as Carpenter of a movie as you can possibly get), two different "ten years later" sequels that are both pretty solid, then some duds.

With the amount of asterisks on this post I thought it was a Tom Brady Superbowl win.
