Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo

So this is apparently Mark Kermode's worst movie of the year. I have not seen it, but Mark Kermode describes it as three and half hours of ass shots. I'm intrigued.

Le Figaro also delved deeper into the Midi Libre report. According to the longer account, “The director had the scenes of the disco replay for hours and hours, exhausting all the actors and the filming was prolonged very late at night, begins the informant of the local newspaper. He absolutely wanted to get to have a sex scene not simulated, which the actors were not willing. But as he insisted over the hours and while alcohol was regularly consumed on the spot, he managed to get what he wanted. “

The new song was good.  Think the biggest issue was that it was too similar to the original and some stuff just doesn't transfer from a cartoon.

Dufus pissing people off once again

....I'm not really one for Ghibli either tbh. I enjoy his flicks (except the moving castle one which just bored me last I watched) but they never stuck with me hard outside of Spirited Away.

I did watch his Lupin the Third recently though and really enjoyed it.

Spirited Away tho :uguu

Here my Ghibli top 10:

1. Only Yesterday
2. Princess Kaguya
3. Wind Rises
4. Kiki
5. Porco Rosso
6. Princess Mononoke
7. Grave of the Fireflies
8.  Spirited Away
9. Ponyo
10. Totoro

I haven't watched them all, but Howl's moving Castle and Poppy Hill are probably my least favorite (though Poppy Hill looks incredible, especially the backgrounds).

I just don’t get calling the human characters trash. It just kind of well....seems stupid.

You can not like the movie sure but that just sticks out to me as a pretty dumb critique. Which was then followed up by a lame “I’m no sheep post”.

Like the movie does a really good job of being even handed with its human characters and not making them evil or good, just understandable. Which in a eco friendly story is somewhat of an accomplishment. The people of Iron Town come off as people and at no point does the movie feel the need to make exaggerated movements of storytelling to make them pittyable, sympathetic, greedy, or whatever. It conveys quite well that they like the animals are just there trying to live. Lady Eboshi is areally well done antagonist as well. Rarely do sympathetic “villains” work like this. Yeah I understand their moviations, but they are still insane and evil. Eboshi isn’t, she’s the antagonistic force obviously and a bit too industrious and prideful, but she’s still very human and full of redeemable qualities.

The main character (Arashi?) is exactly the neutral viewpoint a story like this needs. There’s nothing amazing about him, but his non judgmental self less self serves the story well. I hate to both sides it, but yeah he’s a pretty ok and grounded version of a neutral character. And it makes sense, he comes form a village not yet touched by industry and empire. He’s still human and noble though.

I don’t know as an eco fairly tale I find the characters pretty well grounded and thus the story not up it’s own ass like it could be.

My top 3 (and perhaps Porco Rosso) are the only ones i'd consider "objectively" better movies than Spirited Away.

Approx # of hot takes and hot takes about the hot takes I’ve seen across The Internet about Cowboy Bebop/Evangelion/Miyazaki in the last month: 9000+

# of posts about remastered(?) Millennium Actress streaming free in HD on Amazon Prime: 0

Yeah, we deserve this Disney/Marvel/Fast and Furious 9 hellscape.  :(

Mononoke is a masterpiece, but in general: Takahata > Miyazaki.
Your ideas are intriguing to me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I wrote these off aside from Fireflies(obviously) when I would come across them in Ghibli DVD releases because they basically didn’t have any following or cheerleaders and they looked pretty bland compared to Miyazaki’s. As an old, I’ve started to get pretty hard into low-key, slice of life domestic melodramas between Shoplifters/After the Storm/Still Walking/Nobody Knows and Floating Weeds/Late Spring so I need to fix that...after I fix my Miyazaki blindspots before the Blank Check marathon. #partoftheproblem

Millennium Actress on Prime Video? Gotta be a US thing, as i can't find it (i have the dvd anyway, but i'd like to see it in HD).

And yeah, if you like slice of life, Only Yesteday is a must watch.
Even if you don't think it's their best film (i do) it's still no doubt in their top 5.
Also Kaguya's ending is probably the most bittersweet ending to a Ghibli movie in my eyes, though less overtly harrowing compared to Grave of the Fireflies, it's up there.
Miyazaki and Takahata have very distinct styles, i find Takahata's more interesting and diverse, from movie to movie, and usually directed at an older audience.

I don’t know why people lost their mind over a movie involving the guy behind Lost, Prometheus, and the Leftovers.

Was it going to be good? I have no idea, but there’s a good chance it was going to have a little more under the surface.

Are you really suggesting that Damon Lindelof has any depth to his writing?
The Leftovers is pretty good.

But what I’m suggesting is he at least tries. The quality is another matter.

Malick's back at it.
This looks like a bit of a return to form compared to his post Tree of Life works, but i'm still somewhat underwhelmed by the trailer.
The premise just doesn't seem that intriguing, and the various lines you can hear throughout it, make the writing come off as bland.

Apparently Neil Gaiman did the English dub script for Mononoke, based on a referral from Tarantino.

I mean it makes sense (at least for Tarantino), since he was all up in Miramax's business.
