I'm glad BrandNew actually gave an answer as how TWBB is supposed to make a viewer think instead of another stupid and snobby nose-in-the-air post.

While I'll concede with your assessment of the film I still find myself "thinking" just as much when watching movies like Death Proof.

what does Death Proof make you think about himu

Serial murderers and the means for their grotesque actions, feminism, cars and wimmen;etc.

For me what makes DP interesting are the conversations everyone else finds boring. Each character has their own defined personality, and this brings the movie whole circle. This post summarizes my feelings better than I can articulate:

"To me, the way Tarantino totally flips our expectations is incredible, and to put it frankly, ballsy. He spends half his time in a specific setting with a group of characters, and in an instant, he takes them away and brings us somewhere completely different for the remainder of the film. Who does that in a "genre" picture? I might hate the move if it didn't make complete sense. The first half of the film has much to do about Jungle Julia's facade of toughness. She has the billboards and she talks the talk, but at the end of the day, she's still consumed by a man who stood her up. Her vulnerability is exposed, and ultimately, she is not strong enough to finish this film as its protagonist. Tarantino sets it up brilliantly with the subtle jabs at her character. The line between antagonist and protagonist is suddenly blurred as the first segment reaches its close. The vulnerability factor is played up more bluntly with Butterfly. Stuntman Mike basically spells it out in his speech for her, but he also uses her exposed vulnerability to completely manipulate her. She is not strong enough to finish this film as its protagonist either.

Now we're all set up for the final half of the film. This half isn't just about women who talk tough. It's about women who are tough. I don't believe these characters are just emulating men either. Their initial car ride scene establishes them as being very feminine. The point that Tarantino is getting at is that being assertive and strong willed isn't an exclusively male trait. It's not as though they are going around shooting up a mob of baddies with a pistol in their left and right hands as if it were some violent male fantasy. The last half of the film is simply about a group of women who won't be victimized. The position in which Stuntman Mike finds himself is completely flipped from the first half of the film. He hasn't just met his match; he's been totally dominated. For Tarantino to encase all of this in a film that feels this smooth and effortless is a remarkable achievement in my book (and Stuntman Mike's book too)."

I especially thought the way women were written was refreshing, because, typically when movies or entertainment in general express feminism themes throughout the story of a male targeted film, the gals are tough, burly and loud. Planet Terror epitomized this. But Death Proof flips that on its head, and the girls who end up saving the day are actually pretty damn girly. They talk about the latest Vogue magazine and what kind of lips a dude they make out with has. If there was anything DP made me think about, it was my perception of women in general.

I'll be first to admit that the dialogue in Death Proof is mastubatory - especially any scene where they bring up any stunt movies or past grindhouse movies; the writing isn't even up to snuff with past movies Tarantino wrote. However, for a movie he apparently wrote without much time put into it, I think Death Proof has a lot to say and sympathize with its message, flaws and all. Sure, it's bloated. But to say it's mindless when only 20-30 minutes are spent doing any action at all is lol.

Sunshine was pretty good. The tonal shift from sci-fi to slasher was a bit jarring, but it made up for it by the end. It's sad, because the movie could have worked just as easily without that part and been ten times better overall. Still, definitely a movie worth watching.

For the record, I actually enjoy listening/playing music (I have a drumset).  I just don't define art as just being anything culturally relevant that requires a lot of skill.

The dictionary definition of art goes that it is an arrangement of things that appeals to your senses or emotions.  You can jack off and shoot up with heroin and you'll feel a lot of emotions.  If the performance/piece of artwork make the audience emotional just by making the audience think, then I can consider it art.  Some songs have very well-written lyrics and should be considered art but that number doesn't go in the double digits afaik.

Fun fact: Most early professional paintings were originally commissioned as just technical feats to show off religious iconography up until around the renaissance period.  That's why most early paintings, even if they required skill, were fugly/amatuerish or their meaning was very blunt.  Somehow I remember this factoring into all of Michaelangelo's figures looking roided up (the women were basically men with tits).

(Dale and Hank are at orientation at the basket weaving factory)

Dale: I have a question – I find it interesting that pockets were derived from baskets and were originally called 'pants baskets'.

Instructor: That's not a question.

IT'S ART. WE MUST KILL THE MACHINES.

I don't think it made up for it by the end, but the first 2/3 of the movie are pretty damn incredible, so I do think it's worth a watch as well. It's a stunningly beautiful movie.

I was going to mention that in my post, but I didn't bother, since it was always a horror film and it wasn't as disastrous. 28 Days Later is still a fucking awesome movie, while Sunshine is kinda ruined.

Also, that last part has this song, which is totally awesome.

I watched the first hour of Uwe Boll's fantasy masterpiece In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.

It's not...offensively bad, as some of his past movies have reportedly been, but it's just so bland, boring, and blatantly derivative that the only entertainment I can derive from it is by making fun of it with my brother. Also, there's still another hour and half left to go.  :-\

I saw Up in the Air earlier this evening. Really good film. Well directed and all of the actors did a great job. Clooney was fantastic. Bateman's douchebag character was a little too much, though. A lot of it was filmed in Omaha, so it was fun seeing my wife all giddy.

Watched Terminator: Salvation in HD OnDemand tonight with a bunch of friends. None of us had seen it previously, but we watched it while drinking and doing a MST3000-style running commentary. Made it much better than if we took it seriously. After the film I told everyone about the originally intended ending and they all thought it was better than what made it into the movie.

Watched Requiem for a Dream tonight. Though it is an impressive treatise on dependence it was very distracting that any movie featuring Jennifer Connelly in an ass-to-ass dildo scene and a clear shot of her bush could be entirely devoid of eroticism. Also: Jared Leto's arm as they drive to Florida made me squirm.

Brothers- I don't really know what to think about this one. The first half could have easily passed as a lifetime movie, complete with ridiculously cliched musical choices and comic relief alongside a feel good fairytale romance. In the second half it turns into a serious drama, with an excellent performance turned in by Spiderman, and even a bit of a political statement. I liked parts of it, but it seemed incoherent overall and I didn't like it as a whole.

I found it got better towards the end - if they could have condensed the earlier part of the film considerably I would have found it a lot better.  I could see an enjoyable movie in there but they seemed to spend way too much time on incidental things and the core story and moments got very diluted.

And they had some real slapstick characters/moments but those were placed in between lots of things that were not funny, so when they suddenly came on screen up I couldn't get into the slapstick.

I just found the film as a whole a bit all-over-the-place and unfocused.
