Came to the Switch for BotW but I stayed for Puyo Puyo Tetris.  This game is insane, brehs.  Maybe the best game of its kind since Puzzle Fighter?  Better than Tetris Battle Gaiden, another game that I love.

Started playing Observer which is a cyberpunk story/horror thing. Seems alright so far. Spent most of my time walking around talking to doors. The best parts are when you dive into the minds of people as that seems to be where the brunt of the creativity lies. Few times you have to deal with "enemies" and the story is hinting at some heavy stuff. It's intriguing.

You're going to be so disappointed when you finish that shitty ass game. I enjoyed Layers of Fear and was expecting more of that but with more of a story and instead...got Observer.

Dragon Quest Builders is so good. Playing on the Vita and I just broke Barbarella out of prison. It sucks that the sequel is only coming to 2 consoles which I don't currently own, but I'll most likely have both before it's released.

Finishing up my first Xcom 2: War of the Chosen campaign. Really good, I'd recommend it.
Also finishing up a coop playthrough of Divinity: Original Sin 1 hope to start up my D:OS2 campaign this weekend.
Found my copy of Chrono Trigger for DS a few days ago so that will be my mobile game the next few weeks.

Yeah, DQ Builders drew me in right away... I never got into Minecraft but coating it with a much more visually attractive aesthetic and heaps of DQ nostalgia was enough to perk my interest. But a lot of it really gave me the same feeling of the first time playing DQ1 - exploring a large, violent world by your lonesome. There were a few problems with the hit detection and camera, I'm hoping the sequel rectifies these.

DQ spinoffs are usually of high quality though, while FF spinoffs are all over the place.

Replaying .hack//IMOQ with Last Recode on the way. The combat is objectively not great, but I still love these games.

Controversial stance: I don't care to play Suikoden 2 anymore after the Luca Blight fight

I like Suikoden's storyline better than Suikoden 2. Both are way above average.

I've been playing Warframe again. Apparently nearly every aspect of the game has been overhauled since last time I played. Steam showed 20 hours when I re-installed, but I barely remembered anything outside of a few early tilesets. They still throw a lot of systems and jargon your way without really contextualizing it. Doesn't take a lot to realize why people call it Warfarm though.

It's grabbing me more than it did last time. Possibly because I desire mindless comfort gaming these days? About to build my 2nd Warframe (Rhino, started with Excalibur). Not thrilled on it taking 72 hours though, but a lot less thrilled on paying real money to speed up the process, so whatever. /shrug

each chapter has its own area and save file. you can always load up an old chapter and keep building or finishing sidequests. each chapter also has different stuff to build so it doesn't feel like starting from square one each time.

there's also the free build section for when you wanna make gigantic complex stuff, although you need to finish the story to unlock everything in that.

it plays more like an rpg, but with crafting as the main goal for quests and sidequests. instead of running around aimlessly and building and collecting, you follow a linear story that tasks you with gathering materials to to build up your town. it also helps a ton that much like a regular dq game it has fun characters and scenarios.

Good to know. I was at the cusp of the gaming generation wondering what the big deal is with Minecraft. I mean, I get it, it's first-person Lego building in a shared virtual space with no brick shortages. And things to fight. I can see how it would have been crack for me when I was younger. But it was so overwhelming to watch it take hold of my son and his friends.

Also, in my opinion, Notch is an inconsistent dickbag: "Tim Schafer! I love your game! I will find Psychonauts 2 personally!"
Schafer: "Well, dude, it's not $5M to do the sequel. It'd be more, but thanks for the enthusiasm!"
**Notch receives US$2.5B for Minecraft**
**Notch walks away, averting his eyes and whistling, pretending not to see Schafer's neglected sequel**

Don't know if the creative mode generation would understand the appeal of builders. What I love about it is the building with the added quests. So "go here, get x and with x build y with lots of y you can build a building go and get z with z you can make you building better.." Also, I love that your town comes under attack from monsters so you have to build defenses and then there's getting villagers with actual personaliteis to live in your city. I can't play minecraft after this. This is so much better

Does the Witcher 3 open the entire world up a la Sandbox? Because the Witcher 2, while good, isn't impressing me with these chapter "focus on an area" like the first one.

Huge open world ass open world, but not completely contiguous.

https://witcher3map.com/

White Orchard is the prologue/starting area. Bigger than anything in the first game, maybe the 2nd as well, not sure. Not as much to do there though, because starting area.
Velen & Novigrad. Largest contiguous area (and city) in the game. The Hearts of Stone DLC adds some stuff in the north.
Skellige Isles. Viking archipelago. Not as sprawling, obviously, but 2nd prettiest area in the game.
Kaer Morhen. Wolf school stronghold. It's where you start the game and learn basic movement. You go back there eventually and can explore the surrounding area.
Touissant. Where the Blood and Wine DLC  takes place (expansion, more accuratley). Prettiest area in the game. Think Tuscany, except French. With chevaliers and a fairy tale castle in the middle.

Playing a shit-ton of World of Tanks still, not sure why I like it so much. Keeping me up late.

Meanwhile, Destiny 2 I've cleared story mode and am enjoying it… and at the same time it's not as compulsive a play as WoT for me. I think the grind has got me.

And just started Horizon: Zero Dawn, which is fantastic but I'll keep my thoughts in its dedicated thread.

The Heroes of the Storm community (and that genre of games in general) are extremely toxic and terrible. I mostly stick to A.I. matches because of the whiny try-hards in it but figured I'd make a post pointing out this one guy who continuously harassed me in-game and then through whispers.

What does the Blizzard community do? Defend him.

I picked up Mafia 3 and then expansions and an just now finishing up the last one. I last played it and finished the main campaign when it first released so being able to slow down time to drive and shoot are both great additions. This game was amazing, even with the complaints it received about having to do the “side missions” to get to the boss of an area.

Knee deep in Metroid: Samus Returns but also...

Steamworld Dig 2 is out which I picked up on Switch. The first game was super fun, one of my favorite games on the 3DS. It felt kinda clicker-esque because you were digging for resources to sell and upgrade your character... so you can more efficiently dig for resources. I believe it also was procedurally generated in terms of the world layout. The sequel is no longer procedurally generated from what I understand and instead goes with a fully handcrafted world and more designed puzzle dungeons to find. Also the story-line is more pronounced. I think it mostly works, tho you spend less time in the "Dig Dig, Sell, Dig Dig" loop you did in the first game.

I also picked up Heat Signature which I'm having a real hard time getting into. It's basically Hotline Miami except the levels are procedurally generated space ships you dock onto with a little one-man pod. You pick up missions from your base, fly out and locate the target, dock onto the ship and go in and do your dirt. Normally when I play games I like to stick with the most basic mechanic and I never use extraneous powers or skills. This game is brutally punishing you for doing that because I'm constantly failing missions. I need to spend more time engaging with the other mechanics and skills.

Missing the motherfuck out of Smilebit right now.

I keeeeeep wanting to go back to it, but every time I leave it alone for more than a month, I have re-learn what little I was able to do previously.  :-\

Plus playing with that awesome 5.1 soundtrack.

I love randomly generated worlds but SteamWorld Dig 2 is like the poster boy of why handcrafted provides a superior experience in most cases. What a substantial improvement having these interesting scenarios and puzzles sprinkled about. The world design feels really thoughtful with a gradual difficulty curve in place to help you ease into the more difficult combat encounters or advanced player movement mechanics.

I'm a little mixed on it tbh. Finishing the main storyline, the world the built feels far smaller than what I remember of the first game. Though maybe I'm misremembering it?

I really liked the loop of digging deep, coming back to sell, upgrading, then going back down. I remember spending so much time doing that and it was really fun. I don't really find the puzzle caves to be as engaging as that other kind of gameplay, specifically in the context of this game at least. I don't think I wanted to come to this series for crate and button pushing puzzles honestly.

I wanted more caverns to explore and dig through and it just seems really light on that.

Played almost 8 hours today  :lol

...just to get the tutorial done with so I could actually play the game starting tomorrow!
Because there needs to be 8 hours of tutorial for the 3rd game in a series in case someone is new, but anyone who is new will toss the game in the trash within 30 mins because it will make zero sense since every character/line is referencing something from past games. So yeah, Falcom!

Game is good otherwise. It's CS1 all over again but more interesting. Glad I'm through the tutorials. Worst was having to play a 5-10 minute long card mini-game with 20 tutorials and no way to just quit or skip it.

Ok, so Cold Steel IV just got confirmed. III+IV is the exact same formula of I+II, the first game being the slow school days, second game being story adventure. Hopefully IV comes out next fall so they're only a year apart.

Cold Steel 3 is less that it's pretty fucking good, and more just confirmation that the Kiseki/trails series is the best modern jrpg franchise. The game is alright so far, but it's hard to put down because of Kiseki's way of developing hundreds of NPCs everywhere with constantly updating dialogue so they feel fleshed out. There's no other developer who makes locations seem so alive even if graphically they're kinda dull because graphics ain't Falcom's specialty. On top of that the games always have the most fun battle systems (at least since 3rd onwards, Sky FC/SC is a little plain/slow) and a million quests, fishing and stuff to do/find. They're just really fun games.

I'm 15 hours into Sen 3 and still in the first chapter, lol.

On the mechanics side for those interested, since each Kiseki entry adds a new sub-system to the battle system (although they drop a bunch between country arcs), the one added for Sen 3 is crazy batshit broken and fun. You can do orders at any turn of yours, these orders cost BP which you build up from those link attacks, their are tons of orders and they have insane game breaking abilities that last for X amount of turns. For instance, in the first 15 hours I've encountered:

-Reflect all damage for the next 4 turns on the queue
-Instant spell casting for the next 6 turns on the queu
-Damage + 20% for 8 turns
-Defense + 20% for 8 turns
+Criticals + 30% for 6 turns

Now the first two on that are game breaking crazy. But it adds strategy in how you use it like you wait until your last player on the queue before the boss(es) attack and then use reflect and all the boss attacks will do 0 damage and reflect all damage. This is instant and BP is easy to obtain. Instant spell casting for that many turns can be crazy too. These are the kinds of abilities you would normally get with a maxed out Master Quartz and they'd cost like all your EP to cast and be endgame stuff, now you're doing it every other fight.

But at the same time the bosses are amazingly broken OP as fuck because they know you can break the system back, so straight from the start they'll wipe you quick. It's pretty nuts and a lot of fun.

Another thing that's neat about the Trails/Kiseki franchise in general is how because party members come and go throughout the story (since there's so many party members & guests), it gives them a lot more freedom in plot writing compared to most rpgs where everyone in the cast is in the party from start to finish and you have to write around that.

Holy fuck, chapter 1 in Sen no Kiseki 3 (Cold Steel 3) was amazing. Best first chapter Falcom's done yet. It's exactly the kind of first chapter I wanted out of the final game in the mid-series ending game that should pull together everything from the prior 7 games into a big epic finale. Really enjoying this and the wait for the final 4th game is gonna be rough afterwards.

Playing Bloodborne. Immediately put off by the no-defending thing, but getting used to it.

Started BotW and I’m kind of shocked.  I went in blind and didn’t expect the sci fi stuff.  I thought Zelda was straight fantasy.

It's a lot closer to DMC/character action combat of dodge rolling everything.
Also the parry is legit in this one. If you get the timing down you can counter boss attacks in their early frames with a shot that will stun them and let you do a big damage attack.

Game is awesome, hope you enjoy it!

Playing Resident Evil for the first time via the PS4 remake. First time playing a survival horror really. Took me a few tries to shake the habit of killing everything in sight, but the fact that I only have limited ammo put me on edge. Seriously, I'm dreading hearing zombies moan when I only have like 5 bullets left. I guess the knife can knock them down so I can run but I'm guaranteed damage. The daggers are a nice touch but they're limited of course so I can't lean on that.

Found the first safe storeroom and had to take a short break to post this on some:

Playing with my Golds for extra spookiness btw

survival horror was one of my favorite genres back in the early 00s. damn shame that there aren't as many big japanese horror games anymore.

Way, WAY back in 2000, I gave my copy of System Shock 2 to a friend. He was eventually able to play it only with the sound off and all the lights in the house turned on.

Started BotW and I’m kind of shocked.  I went in blind and didn’t expect the sci fi stuff.  I thought Zelda was straight fantasy.
The "ancient tech" motif has been around for a while. They always allude to some advanced civilization from the past but the old technology from game to game seems to be unrelated and not from the same source.  Wind Waker (Tower of the Gods) and Twilight Princess (Temple of Time) technology were kind of similar despite not taking place in the same timeline but it's a super loose association. Skyward Sword had a bunch old technology including sentient robots even though Skyward Sword is the very beginning of the timeline and takes place tens of thousands of years before BotW, meaning the old SS robots and Sheikah BotW tech are unrelated and developed independently from each other. So Mythical Hyrule, long before any of the mostly medieval fantasy games take place, had both sentient robots and magical deities running around concurrently.

The Zelda timeline is beyond fucked, none of it makes sense and Nintendo doesn't care.  :rofl
