Yeah, I never know if I'm cheering for Rich because he's a self-made talent, or because he's a smart, nice guy. Getting knocked out by The Spider isn't much of a knock against him, looking back now across Silva's record.

No, it really isn't. It's Anderson Fucking Silva. If he's not dancing around like a dumbass he's usually the best fighter active right now.

Rich is a really nice dude and a good fighter. The problem is the UFC won't let him fight at the weight he should be fighting at. He's just a really good gatekeeper at LHW. He won't beat the top guys in that division. And he's a little small for a LHW.

But he's a much better fighter at middleweight where he is a big middle-weight. He's probably top three in the UFC at middleweight but he can't fight Silva again and they don't want him beating up the up and comers in that division who can eventually fight Silva. So he's in a weird spot. He has to fight in a division he is less suited for because of UFC matchmaking.

Rich has lost to 4 dudes in his career. Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Vitor Belfort, and Dan Henderson. And the Dan Henderson fight could have gone either way. That's not a bad list.

So just how badly is James Toney going to get his ass handed to him? I think Randy's only got to get him to the ground (likely not a problem) and lock in any kind of submission (perhaps a little less easy for Randy). The only way I see this going Toney's way is if Couture gets caught in the clinch, and even there I think Toney's going to have a career's worth of ingrained instincts working against him.

Ya, the clinch won't save Toney.  That's where Couture made a career out of eating people up and spitting them back out.

Anyone that missed the WEC card on Sunday should try to catch a rerun or check out the fights on mma-core. Another one of those cards that looked kinda eh on paper but ended up being awesome. The Hominick/Jabouin fight was especially great. Hominick has come a long way from eking out a decision in a stand-up fight with Jorge Gurgel, no doubt thanks to Shawn Tompkins. The only fight I was dissatisfied with was the main event, and that was partly because it was marred by some terrible judging. But hey, these days it seems impossible to have an event without myopic judges or a bad stoppage, so what can you do

Ya, I caught the Hominick and Horodecki fights online.  Good stuff.

. Hominick has come a long way from eking out a decision in a stand-up fight with Jorge Gurgel, no doubt thanks to Shawn Tompkins.

Bit of an odd statement, since Hominick has always trained under Tompkins, going back at least six years before the Gurgel fight.  I think the Gurgel fight was just an off-night for Mark.

Man I didn't think he hooked up with him until after his UFC days. I can't recall Tompkins being in his corner during the Gurgel fight, but it's been so long that I'm probably wrong.

Are there any Canadians that HAVEN'T trained under Tompkins at some point? I think he was cornering someone in every other fight on Sunday lol

:lol That's crazy!

Ya.  I started martial arts with Shawn, back when he was just teaching karate in a small town in southern Ontario.  He gradually got into kickboxing, then MMA.  So I trained karate and a bit of kickboxing under him for six years.  Then I went off to university, where I started BJJ, but during the summers I came back to my hometown and trained MMA at Shawn's London club with Horodecki, Hominick, and Stout.  This was just before Shawn made the move to the States full-time.

It's been about 3 years since I last trained with them all.  Never would have thought when I started karate at age 12 that my sensei would end up living in Las Vegas and training the likes of Dan Henderson, Randy Couture, Forrest Griffin, and Wanderlei Silva.  :lol

What are the odds on Werdum at this point? I'm tempted to put money on him, just on the off chance that he wins, because 1000-to-1 payoffs are so few and far between?

Fedor Emelianenko -550
Fabricio Werdum    +325

I'm gonnna love hearing from all the Sherdog and GAF Fedor nuthuggers.

Not because this invalidates Fedor or his amazing reign. Everybody gets beat. And if they rematched I would still favor Fedor. Werdum just had excellent anticipation and was able to capitalize.

Its just that those people were so fucking annoying.

This turned out to be a damn fine card. Maybe card of the year.

It was a bad mistake but I think he just thought he was going to finish him right then and there. It happens. Everybody gets careless eventually. And Werdum was just set up perfectly. I'm not going to say it was lucky because dude has excellent bjj but if these guys fought 10 more times I would be doubtful that would be the final result many of those times.

Btw while you can knock Anderson Silva for some things this is why MMA fans are idiots for knocking him for not getting on the ground with people like Maia and Leites. Because that is what easily can happen if you are not careful.

I totally agree with that regarding Silva. I think he got embarrassing in his last fight, but mostly I have zero problem with him and love watching him fight.

Also, you're right. Fedor kinda does that ALL the time. The guy is just relentless. This is the first time it's come back to bite him.

Yeah it was kind of the best of both worlds for Werdum. He got hit and knocked down but it wasn't a very damaging hit. And the scramble after Fedor jumped in there was a perfect setup. A lot of people will try to spin this as being very damaging for the Fedor Legend. I kinda don't see it that way. I mean if he loses a few more times after this then yeah he is clearly on the decline, but this was just one of those things. He got careless and he got beat. Everybody gets beat in MMA. The only difference was that people thought those rules didn't exist for Fedor.

Fedor's last 5 fights were against the following.

Brett Rogers
Andrei Arlovski
Tim Sylvia
Hong-Man Choi
Matt Lindland

All of which who if they beat him would have been considered nobody's. So if he was going to lose, he was going to lose to a "nobody" based on who he was fighting. A more appropriate observation would be maybe he should be fighting better people but that's a side debate.

Fabricio Werdum is a top notch BJJ guy with relatively weakish stand-up. He has beat Overeem, Fedor's brother, Gonzaga twice, etc.  So if the fight was going to go any way it was probably Werdum getting knocked out in the stand-up or Werdum submitting Fedor. Like I said, I'm not trying to pretend anybody was saying Werdum was going to win, but its a fight. And anything can happen in a multi-discipline combat sport where you can't be the best in everything. Fedor nailed all the foolish people imo with a great quote.

"The one who doesn't fall never stands up. It happened that people made me an idol. But everybody loses. I'm just a human being. And if it's God's will next fight, I'll win."

The thing to do is appreciate great fighters and respect how rare they lose. Not pretend they are unbeatable.

Yeah, this is likely the biggest thing right now. I feel like Fedor is just doing his thing, and unfortunately believing what his crew tells him. Meanwhile they're working the whole entourage scenario to its hilt. And now the whole "UNDEFEATED EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE LOSS THAT MAYBE WASN'T EVEN A LOSS"  -- yeah, yeah. Sit down. He's got a real loss now.

Honestly it sort of depends on what motivates this guy. And I think if it was purely money he would have taken the original UFC deal. I agree that he has lost a lot of bargaining power if he ever wanted to go to the UFC but I don't believe that was ever his aim.

It's not like he's broke. I'm sure he's a multi-millionaire many times over. It's more about whether M-1 has any actual longevity once he is gone and whether he can make money via that route even after he retires. I think that is what is questionable.

If Brock can get Carwin in the ground right away, and just handle him with some GNP i think he will take this. But if he lets Carwin hit him, i don't care how big and athletic Lesnar is, Carwin will just knock him out.

Light Heavyweight bout:  Krzysztof Soszynski vs.  Stephan Bonnar
