While I certainly didn't expect him to win and fully expected Fedor to roll all over him, Werdum isn't a nobody at all.
Next to the God of MMA? Yes he was.
Now Werdum shall be seen as the man who beat a god.
Fedor's last 5 fights were against the following.
Brett Rogers
Andrei Arlovski
Tim Sylvia
Hong-Man Choi
Matt Lindland
All of which who if they beat him would have been considered nobody's. So if he was going to lose, he was going to lose to a "nobody" based on who he was fighting. A more appropriate observation would be maybe he should be fighting better people but that's a side debate.
Fabricio Werdum is a top notch BJJ guy with relatively weakish stand-up. He has beat Overeem, Fedor's brother, Gonzaga twice, etc. So if the fight was going to go any way it was probably Werdum getting knocked out in the stand-up or Werdum submitting Fedor. Like I said, I'm not trying to pretend anybody was saying Werdum was going to win, but its a fight. And anything can happen in a multi-discipline combat sport where you can't be the best in everything. Fedor nailed all the foolish people imo with a great quote.
"The one who doesn't fall never stands up. It happened that people made me an idol. But everybody loses. I'm just a human being. And if it's God's will next fight, I'll win."
The thing to do is appreciate great fighters and respect how rare they lose. Not pretend they are unbeatable.
