Watched one episode of that (undone).
Nah, dodn't care for the characters and writing at all.

I also didn't like Bojack Horseman though, so it makes sense.

I ended up loving it. The main character can be insufferable, especially initially, but it feels like it's a symptom of her mental illness. It mixes surrealism with her mental illness that makes you question the nature of the blending realities in a way that's really poignant.

There's also criticism of the glorifying of mental illness as a sort of sign of brilliance or untapped power. But I feel like it balances this intelligently. A true work of fantasy but still very aware of the sensitive subject it's deeply involved with

Checked out the pilot for Altered Carbon. Very gripping. And the police officer is so hot. Consider me invested.

It's a good show. The book is also fantastic. That hottie detective is truly remarkable.

Never has a show taken such a steep dive in quality at about the 3/4 mark as Altered Carbon.

Just finished first season of The Sinner, it was kind of alright all said and done. I liked the detective's character, they struck the right balance between him being kind of broody and a bit on the spectrum without making him go full distinguished mentally-challenged fellow like the guy from the River show.

The mystery itself ended up being kind of disappointing, it started out engrossing enough but it lost steam as the series progressed. Wasn't too big of a fan of teenage melodrama in my murder mystery series and the frequent flash backs were meandering constantly retreading similar grounds.

Recently was browsing through Netflix a bit drunk when I came across 'The Naked Director'.
Japanese series about some famous porn director from the 80's. Gave it a shot and after a few days have seen all the episodes.

It's actually better than you might expect, with some great character building and a dramatization of events that apparently really happened.

Weird as hell and very different than your usual Netflix show though. I read they're doing a second season as well :doge

Speaking of TV shows involving porn, The Deuce just started it's final season. First two seasons are my favorite work out of him since The Wire so I highly recommend y'all get on that shit.

I think The Deuce is also written/produced by David Simon, so your comment is not surprising.

Yeah, in Japan it's the go-to preview which plays on EVERYONE'S Home screen right now. Which is, actually, pretty weird considering it is very adult in its content.

Watched a couple of episodes of "Marianne" a french horror show on Netflix.
It's actually pretty good in the spooks department, it treads very familiar ground in almost every respect, but the horror set pieces are mostly well crafted from a visual standpoint.

The main character is also fairly interesting, but that's where the problems start: She's the only character been given any form of depth so far, and she can't really carry the show alone properly, so what they do is... they move and a breakneck pace.
At the end of episode 1 (of 10) you're already in what would be the end of act 2, in a regular horror movie, and then it keeps going at this pace.
That may sound good, but actually it detracts from the potential tension they could build and just makes the spooky moments feel less impactful, when you have 1 every other sequence (almost literally).

They should've given some more depth to side characters, slowed down the pace, introduce some doubt into the development ("is she crazy?" "Is there really a ghost haunting her?") of the plot.

The way it is now, it almost feels like an action version of something like The Conjuring/The Ring, with the ghost/witch being given a recurring, talking role in every episode (the actress playing her is really fun to watch, too).

Will continue to watch this for sure, though.

Yep it's really fun to watch.

They also do a good job of explaining all the cultural references and it goes surprisingly in depth on entrepeneurship and social constructs.

Finished Marianne and pretty much, my initial impressions were carried out through the end.
There aren't many decent horror tv shows, so it's not too bad, but they definitely needed a better cast to properly carry the show, because what is there, is a bit too cartoonish and shallow to do it.
The characters actually have elements that could make them interesting, but the pace is so fast, that they never get time to properly explore anything properly, and come off as cardboard ideas, instead.

Also the actress playing the witch in the first half, really made a lot of the scares better, than what you get in the second half.

I'm liking the mythology they hinted at though, i'm a sucker for any horror involving witchcraft, satanism, the devil and all that shit.

Fucking iZombie gives no fucks and I love it. I'm on S4 and the way they've essentially amped the the effects of eating brains on zombies is amazing. Especially with how Liv becomes these people.

The D&D, dominatrix, and Prank Bro episodes are my favorite so far

Unfortunately this was correct. The last fourth was still good, but it didn't live up to the expectations the rest of the show had set. Excited for the second season next year in any case.

A few eps into The Fall. The pacing of this show is so deliberate. At first I found it ponderous but I'm warming up to it and it's fresh compared to the breakneck pace of other procedurals. I didn't realize it but I really missed the deep, engrossing character development of shows like The Killing.

Still need to see Top of the Lake. Sorry toku and don

I laughed at the SQL query talk during ep 1 of Jack Ryan, but it was a good show. Berlin Station was good too but I doubt many people would follow such a very British production.

Yeah, i like these breakneck paced shows, it's why i liked Sneaky Pete as well (though that's more light hearted, and it had Bryan Cranston as a bad guy) even if it means conceding some pretty big logical fallacies here and there.
But they share in the basic structure of a clever main protagonist caught between a rock and a hard place, making promises to A to pay B, and taking money from B to pay back A.

Ozark in particular has fun with the wife character, who for once isn't used as the nagging moral compass shielded from the horrors, but it's in on the action. It makes for a refreshing duo dynamic, despite the rocky marriage.

To elaborate more on some of the specific complaints I have:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
- killing off all the good characters. Del, Agent Petty, JACOB Snell instead of Darlene?? Thankfully they rotate new, interesting characters, but damn. Petty in particular was a great foil for Marty. Marty destroys everything around him on accident because he's just trying to save his family. Roy chooses to destroy everything in his path because he's pursuing justice. That's a five season arch nemesis plot and they lost it  :doge
- Really screwing with Ruth's dad arc. I thought eventually they'd have her choose between Marty and her dad. Instead they killed him off as a loose end.
- Wasting the Mason plot. He should have been a wild card that killed the Snells.
[close]

I think the gist of this is that sometimes I feel like I'm being dragged from issue to issue instead of watching irresolvable forces build up to explosive conclusions (the BB formula). But, on balance, still a great show.

Riotus, speaking of spy TV shows, have you seen Little Drummer Girl? It's directed by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Handmaiden etc) based on Le Carrè's novel, and it's just 6 episodes.
I'm only 1 episode in, but looks very solid so far, great cinematography as expected.

There's a good cast too (Michael Shannon, Florence Pugh, Stellan Skarsgard).

Also watched Mr Robot final season episode 2 and this show just keeps getting darker and more depressing. And more WTF. Really curious to see if they nail the ending.
