Watched a couple of episodes of "Marianne" a french horror show on Netflix.
It's actually pretty good in the spooks department, it treads very familiar ground in almost every respect, but the horror set pieces are mostly well crafted from a visual standpoint.
The main character is also fairly interesting, but that's where the problems start: She's the only character been given any form of depth so far, and she can't really carry the show alone properly, so what they do is... they move and a breakneck pace.
At the end of episode 1 (of 10) you're already in what would be the end of act 2, in a regular horror movie, and then it keeps going at this pace.
That may sound good, but actually it detracts from the potential tension they could build and just makes the spooky moments feel less impactful, when you have 1 every other sequence (almost literally).
They should've given some more depth to side characters, slowed down the pace, introduce some doubt into the development ("is she crazy?" "Is there really a ghost haunting her?") of the plot.
The way it is now, it almost feels like an action version of something like The Conjuring/The Ring, with the ghost/witch being given a recurring, talking role in every episode (the actress playing her is really fun to watch, too).
Will continue to watch this for sure, though.
