Cars got dirty in GTA IV as well. There was even a throwaway mission where you take a car to a Car Wash. It removes the grime layer but leaves the car damage otherwise. I hate to think about how many development hours were invested in all that crap.

Compared to GTA IV, it was impossible to flip a car in BoGT. Maybe that makes it more "fun", but I liked having to deal with the risk if I wanted to corner at a high speed.

I don't even remember this. I guess the car grime was more pronounced in SA due to the brighter colors.

This is the mission I remembered, from vanilla GTA IV, though this particular video is an object lesson in why to never take your car to a mechanized drive-through car wash.

It would; except, in GTA, IV the fire is just an indicator of car damage, and not a simulated fire. So the jets of flame are actually attempting to warn the player that the car is damage to the point where it will explode.

My best guess is that this was done in a PC version with some modifications on wherever force is applied, not a buggy bit of physics, such as GTA IV's famous "haunted playground."

Grand Theft Auto V Special Edition - $79.99

Grand Theft Auto V Collector's Edition - $159.99

Rockstar's press release.
It might also be worth noting that the blimp you've seen in trailers can be piloted if you pre-order any version of the game.

Man, if they don't have garages that save every car, they've fucked up major. Who wants to buy cars if I'm going to do the same thing I always do in GTA? Keep my awesome cars and NEVER DRIVE THEM because they always BLOW UP and you LOSE THEM FOREVER? When using actual in game money, this makes the choice obvious.

Yeah, I think, the first thing I'll do when I get the game aside from the usual vehicle control test, is to try to save a car in a garage. Given that Michael already has a garage since he's loaded and Franklin works with cars, I think it'll be easy to do.

So the plan:

1. Steal a car
2. run over a cop
3. steal his gun (first gun)
4. try out aiming
5. try out wanted system
6. drive car to garage and see if it saves
7. BLOW CAR UP
8. go back to garage and see if I can pay a fee to have saved car revived

Will take ten minutes tops to get to the core of it. All of these things better be fucking awesome.

I bought the collectors edition of GTA IV, and have felt pretty burned for it.

I'd love the Los Santos cap, but that's about it.

Std edition (pronounced "ess tee dee") for Li'l Old Me.

The digital content in Max Payne was later available as DLC, and then later again as discounted DLC.

I'll wait.

Grand Theft Auto V is the largest and most ambitious game we have yet created, and takes full advantage of every ounce of processing power available in the current generation of consoles. In order to provide the best possible experience for such a massive and detailed world, the game will have installation requirements on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 systems. For Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs; Disc 1 will be used for a one-time mandatory install and Disc 2 will be used to play the game. After the install, players will be able to enjoy both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online without any need to switch discs.
This initial install will require an Xbox 360 Hard Drive or an external 16GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space. If using a USB flash drive it must be at least USB 2.0 with a minimum 15mb/s read speed and formatted for Xbox 360 use. A new USB flash drive is recommended to ensure optimum performance. For PlayStation®3, the game ships on one disc and will install content as soon as you insert the game. The install is roughly 8GB, and players will be able to play as soon as the install is complete.

Halo 3 had a mandatory install for multiplayer didn't it so this is not entirely unprecedented. First time it's happened for a single player experience though I think. Dat gen fatigue.

It is a reason, because typically on a console you have the benefit of forgoing any kind of install process. Console games shouldn't have to install. I understand mandatory installation may be the norm with console games now (right? I stopped playing them when they were just starting to do this), but it's not worth putting up with if I can just wait six months for a better-looking, better-running, likely-cheaper version of the game.

When you put GTA IV into a console, there's not a single menu or prompt, it loads straight into the game. Rockstar used to tout its data-streaming technology, what happened?

But a one time installation on consoles doesn't necessarily means it's worth waiting 6 months to a year for the pc version simply because the console version requires an install too. 10-15 minute installation versus 6 months to a year seems pretty obvious to me.

I should clarify that if Rockstar managed to fit this game on a disc that you didn't have to install, it would make the wait for a PC version much more difficult. Convenience is one of the few advantages console games have over PC (or rather, had), and that doesn't count for GTA V.

Not getting it on day one isn't an issue to me, because I'm positive I'll have plenty of games to chew through in the meantime. At least if I wait, enough info will be out about the game that I'll know exactly what I'm in for before I buy it.

Looks very impressive but I never felt like I want to play that game while watching, even though I likely will and enjoy it.  The actual 'campaign' sounds a tad perfunctory with how they're playing up the overall experience as crazy dense.

And random observation not necessarily positive or negative: the hud and general user interface is much more clinical than the typical Rockstar game.  There are some neat touches, like when you're on foot the minimap is the regular top down view, but when you're driving, it's tilted a bit to show you more of what's ahead.
