Lavrov has presented the case for war

It doesn't sound like invasion plans but rather an attack to destroy the PMC, volunteer and militia forces backed by the US.

You should watch the interview Cummings did with the BBC, where he explained all their planning in detail.

Dom is now probably getting increasingly worried that the Ukraine crisis has allowed Boris to channel his inner Churchill and melt away party gate.
When you're on the brink of war the last thing you want as the conservatives is the instability of changing horses.

https://twitter.com/BorisJohnson/status/1486008872716353541

The situation in Ukraine has become very confusing.
Ukraine says that there is little danger or rather that they don't think an imminent invasion is happening. The US or rather the White House has openly accused Ukraine of downplaying the threat and the UK also seens an ever growing threat.
The UK went as far as to publish the Kremlin coup plans. The foreign policy wonks are now openly starting to wonder if Zelensky is perhaps aligned with the Kremlin as well, since in his public appearances he provides RT with anti-US sound bites.
Meanwhile the US and UK are shipping more and more arms to Ukraine as Putin sends more and more tanks, troops and now planes to Belarus for unspecified exercises.

Man, that guy is a bad liar.
The fact that he freaked out over those questions says it all.
I don't know why we don't trust the people who claimed:
- Iraq has WMD's
- Assad's regime was about to fall
- Trump was a Russian agent
- The Russians paid bounties to ISIS for killing US soldiers
- Kabul would not fall to the Taliban anytime soon
- A bunch of aid workers were terrorists

We've reached the "Trust me bro" phase of intelligence and national security.
They don't even bother with showing us the fake intel they claim they have.

Russia keeps sending more troops to Belarus which doesn't make much sense.

Basically what I expected, they plan to destroy the army of Ukraine prior to the invasion (probably in the east) and then in the chaos install a puppet government that will welcome the Russian military.

Jeff Mauer wrote a Johnson Uncertainty explainer for all us dumb Americans:
Part of me thinks that the scandal should amount to a big, fat “who cares?” Johnson and his staff broke Covid rules, and that’s bad. But a lot of people broke the rules, so the punishment should fit the crime, and that punishment should be…I dunno, breaking a toddler’s swing set with your fat drunk ass is pretty embarrassing, so that might be enough punishment right there.

But “who cares?” is definitely the wrong reaction. The British public cares, and I’m constantly preaching political pragmatism, so I need to treat whatever the public cares about as part of the political landscape. And, though I’m American, people are people — yes, even British people are people — so it should be possible to draw lessons from this and learn something about political psychology.

It’s striking to me how gettable this scandal is. “They were partying while you were stuck inside” is a situation that everyone instantly understands; it brings out the 17-year-old-who-didn’t-get-invited-to-the-party in all of us. Processing the injustice requires no prior knowledge or commitment to any abstract principal. I spent much of the Trump era wondering if any of his scandals would stick; it was only in year two or three that I realized no, they wouldn’t, mostly because they were too abstract. It’s just very complicated, you see, to explain that the division between the White House and the Justice Department is important, so when Trump tells Don McGahn to fire the Special Counsel…Jesus, I’m already boring myself. The minute you think “I need a white board”, you’re finished. Prior to January 6, Trump’s worst misdeeds were complex, they were described only in print, they contained no splashy details like a SECRET WHITE HOUSE RECORDING SYSTEM (Watergate) or a splooged-upon blue dress (Bill Clinton), and in hindsight it seems silly that I ever thought there might be mass public outrage over any of them. Probably the only thing that would have turned people against Trump is footage of him being urinated on by a Russian prostitute, which I, personally only see as a scandal if he neglected to tip.

:putin "Everyone understands Joe, from the technical military as well as the economic and political point of view that Ukraine is part of the Russian sphere of influence and the new multi-polar world of shared power limits NATO's ability to dictate the security terms for the region. It matters not who is the American President as your agressive foreign policy is embedded into your geopolitical aims, state apparatus and popular culture. In Russia we have a saying, which translates to something like: You can't teach on old dog new tricks when the owner hangs himself"

:rogan "So we've all been wondering this for a while. But you've been President for so long and our Presidents when they get out of office, they look like shit, they've aged like 60 years. What is your secret Vladimir, did you ever do DMT?"

Macron says the talks were reassuring and eased his fears after the signals he got from Lukashenka earlier. Putin seems willing to consider some of the proposals.
Macron will meet with Zelensky next in Kyiv tommorow and then call Putin again.

The US still hasn't gotten the assurance from Germany that they will cancel NordStream 2 if Putin invades.
And that's sort of where there seems to be a lack of understanding that Germany wants NordStream 2 more (to go around Ukraine) than Russia does.

Putin's main concern seems to be that if Ukraine joins NATO they could re-take the Crimea as all post Maidan presidents and prime ministers have said they would and the US would support.

I think Macron is trying to somehow settle the issue of the Crimea as it would allow Europe to lift sanctions (for which there's already quite a bit of support in the EU).
For the Donbass the closest to a solution to the current situation seems to be to implement the Minsk agreements but Russia and Ukraine disagree on what that entails.
Overall it seems like Putin underestimated the resilience of Ukraine itself.
As for Belarus now that Macron has signaled that he fears Lukashenka is a loose cannon I don't think it will stay independent for long.

The explanation was that to meet with Putin you need to go in quarantine first but Macron didn't have time to do so.
So instead they created a set-up to maintain social distancing. Overall it seemed like an ok meeting, they had dinner together and spoke for about 2 - 3 hours.

I think the US overestimates the Russian goals and underestimate the impact COVID-19 had on the region and their economy.

Likewise I've seen pictures of Mariupol and other cities under Kyiv's control in the East and due to the enduring conflict there haven't been any changes since 2014 and parts of it are still wrecked.
The conflict is nearing a decade and this situation can't be maintained forever.
