So given that the EU has more or less given their ultimatum to the UK, British MPs surely must be leaving the shit-flinging in the HoC aside, to focus on g-

Conservative MP Crispin Blunt says the PM has taken a no-deal Brexit off the table, having "listened to a remainer Parliament".

He suggests her statement "will represent the most shameful surrender by a British leader since Singapore in 1942", a remark greeted with consternation by some on the Conservative benches.

Never mind, keep calm and carry on.

Theresa May has ruled out a third Commons vote on her Brexit deal on Tuesday.

She tells MPs there is not enough support in Parliament at the moment for another meaningful vote, but she continues to have discussions with MPs to see if they can be convinced to vote for the deal.

In her statement to MPs, she says that the EU Council has reiterated again that there "could be no re-opening of the withdrawal agreement".

The UK has an extension to 11pm on the 12th of April, she says, in the event that no deal is agreed by Parliament.

Any further extension, and the UK will need to take part in elections for the European parliament.

Somebody explain it to a dumb american like me. I get that the best 'Brexit' deal currently possible is the one May is pushing but, it's clear that nobody likes it. So why is May still pushing it without major changes?

Because she can't change it, the EU won't agree to anything else.

In Thierry Baudet news. Our PM published an op-ed in the biggest newspaper this morning calling for an end to threats on his life.
Plus the antifa radical was arrested today for threatening him.

Good news all around.

MPs have defied the government and voted in favor of an amendment that gives them control of parliament's agenda this Wednesday. The passage of the Letwin amendment allows lawmakers to hold a series of indicative votes on various alternative Brexit options.

Lawmakers could vote on as many as seven different options -- which might include a second referendum, crashing out with no deal and a Norway-style deal with the EU -- which would give the UK full access to the single market and the European Free Trade area. The votes are non-binding.

the government is May's people, basically the executive branch except they can draft laws. parliament is the oversight of the government and they also approve laws drafted by the government.

In other news. It seems like the climate deal will be voted down in Brussels tommorow.
Merkel doesn't want to risk the EU falling apart under her watch and is said to be voting with Poland and other Eastern European countries against the climate accord.
The climate accord basically means that all EU nations need to be Carbon Neutral by 2050.

The European Parliament has backed controversial copyright laws critics say could change the nature of the net.

The new rules include holding technology companies responsible for material posted without proper copyright permission.
Many musicians and creators say the new rules will compensate artists fairly - but others say they will destroy user-generated content.

The two clauses causing the most controversy are known as Article 11 and Article 13.

Article 11 states that search engines and news aggregate platforms should pay to use links from news websites.
Article 13 holds larger technology companies responsible for material posted without a copyright licence.

It means they would need to apply filters to content before it is uploaded.

This is why the EU is fucking useless.

Enacting laws written by massive lobby firms on subjects they have no clue about.
And always applauding themselves when something as horrible as this is 'passed'.
See also the GDPR.

The BBC's Brexit chart is getting better by the minute.

(Image removed from quote.)
Next week they will be at a scenario not on this chart.
"1922 committee receives letter of intent to challenge Theresa May for leadership position before a next general election takes place in case of a no-deal Brexit?" Y -> Jacob Rees-Mogg Prime Minister / N -> Theresa May left in charge to plan next meaningful vote
"Jeremy Corbyn replaced by sex dwarf that impersonates John Bercow" FAIL -> ORDER and possible meaningful vote on Theresa May Brexit deal / Success -> NO ORDER, equal rights for sex dwarfs in parliament but any votes may be postponed until apologies are made to John Bercow"
"Chief mouser Whiskers send to Brussels" Y -> Brexit postponed until July 2021 / N -> no-deal Brexit takes place May 1st

In the afternoon of Feb. 22, the statement says, Hong Chang asked to see the business supervisor at the embassy before letting the rest of the group in. Upon entry, the group started to "violently hit staff members until they were able to tie them up and blindfold them," the judge says.

One woman held in the embassy was able to escape out of a first-floor window and asked for help, according to the statement. Neighbors heard her and called the police, who then knocked on the embassy door and attempted to talk to those inside. Hong Chang allegedly opened the door, wearing a North Korean pin, and told police that everything was in order.

weird shit

and from another story:

Quote
As described in a report by judge José de la Mata of Spain’s Audiencia Nacional, the leader of the commando-style group, who is a Mexican citizen living in the US and was identified as Adrián Hong Chang, then flew to Newark, New Jersey.

Several days later he contacted the FBI to offer information about the incident as well as information from the electronics taken.

Mr Hong Chang reportedly also carried an Italian driver’s licence in the name of Matthew Chao — and had an Uber account in the name of Oswaldo Trump.

The Algerian Army Chief of Staff went on TV for an allocution and said that Bouteflika should be impeached by the Constitutional Council on grounds of him being incapacitated. This could lead to his destitution within two months. Bouteflika's voice hasn't been heard since late 2014.

Algerians want more, however, and will continue to protest if the reporting is accurate.

Theresa May has promised Tory MPs she will stand down if they back her EU withdrawal deal.

The PM said she would not stay in power for the next phase of Brexit talks on the future trading relationship, at a meeting of the 1922 committee.

But she did not set a firm departure date, according to Tory MPs who were at the meeting.

It comes as MPs seize control of the Commons agenda to hold votes on alternatives to the deal.

Might just be my American frame of reference, but May seems to be in a similar spot to where John Boehner was. She's in charge of a nominal majority but there's a hardline faction that won't back any deal that's acceptable to her negotiating partner (Obama's the EU in this). The obvious solution would be to make up for those votes by compromising with the opposition party, but she's refused to do that.

If she steps down and that's still the dynamic as they move on to the next set of talks, doesn't that just lead to the same type of dysfunction with someone else at the head?

How is it acceptable to vote in favour of the exact same deal you've rejected twice before just because this time it'll result in a change of leadership? Parliamentary systems can seem like such a fuck up.

Btw Vom, I'm predicting military rule in Algeria.

I'm more optimistic and I don't think the "military" (to use a bit of a shortcut though a number of prime movers are high officers and security services) will rule more than they do now. The people already obtained once a liberalisation of the system thirty years ago, which went off the rails immediately with the civil war that followed obviously, but that's to say that it's a longstanding wish that was only put on a backburner by the population under the duress of horrific atrocities.

The country has a lot of issues (economically, for one, unemployment is a major problem. Renewing the political personnel is another.) but I think it is politically mature enough that it may transition to multipartism peacefully without having to tear down the FLN.

I'll let Brits confirm but I don't think she had anything to reach to as Labour is under the same sort of inner contradictions about Europe and the rest.

Maybe if Parliament had directed negotiations from the start they would have had time to swallow the deal as something more palatable ? But really the UK shot itself in the foot with delusional expectations for a negociation they had barely any leverage in for bargaining.

When opera singers troll brexiteers :lol

Quote
An opera singer was asked to change her EU flag themed dress for a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall.

British soprano Anna Patalong sang in six performances of the Classical Spectacular concert from 21 to 24 March.

On Saturday, Patalong wore a sash and necklace featuring EU stars.

[...]

The show's finale creates an atmosphere similar to that at Last Night of the Proms, and features patriotic songs like Rule Britannia.

Patalong's dress was not the only way in which she showed her support for the EU during Saturday's concert.

Her husband shared a video of the soprano briefly singing the lyrics of Rule Britannia to the tune of Beethoven's Ode to Joy, which is the basis of the EU's Anthem of Europe.

Anyone care about Australian politics?

NSW state election result was interesting.

Although I still think the Libs are fucked at the upcoming federal election, I don't think it will be the massive wipeout that it was looking a few months ago.

Shorten remains an unpopular choice and is the biggest weight dragging Labor down.

Will be the first election for me for a long time where I don't care too much who gets in. Basically, both options are equally shit.
