It's the lame poli-sci student in me instead of the beloved shitpost spammer you all worship, and I know not only would the thread be locked but most of these people wouldn't actually have an answer. But when people talk about World War III, I always want to inquire about what they think would set it off, and for background what they think set off World War II (I think most people now agree with the general historical consensus regarding the Great War: stupidity) because to take one World War II theory and apply it to the current state of the world. What would be an equivalent of the Hitler-Stalin Pact to carve up Poland that caused the French and British to decide to enforce the protection of Poland against solely Germany? (By staying in their borders and waiting for a German attack.) And who would the powers even be? Especially as many of them are suggesting in these scenarios, Trump-Putin-Bolsonaro are in league together.

It's one of those things, like when your ear plugs up and only by bending your head a weird way does it open up and it's really more annoying than anything and it'll go away on its own but right now it's just really nagging at you even though you know it shouldn't.

We actually have similar laws in the US whereby intent and context can alter the judgement of libel and slander. I personally think that as awful as this person is, and as dangerous as the precedent may be, that the onus should be on the offended to argue the definition with facts and show and prove actual harm - and I have read and seen some apologism on this detail that varies from the "the numbers in that history are wrong and nine is actually sixteen something-something " to the more credulous and unfortunately correct context that "this kind of thing was normal and acceptable in the region at the time." And not just on the Arabian peninsula.

I'm from a culture that regularly tied innocent women to chairs and drowned them to prove they weren't witches. That's right, if they died they were innocent and if they didn't drown then they were definitely in league with Satan and would be tortured or burned or both. And this was hundreds of years after Mohammed.

My point is not to defend anything at all here - since I personally don't approve of anything or anyone in this story, but that comparative context is important, no matter how outraged we are in 2018 - remember that most of the Muslims you know would absolutely reject a dowry or marriage of that sort today (and even in places where child brides are accepted, there are often strict rules preventing those children from being raped by elderly men) for the same reason Christians don't stone each other to death for mixing wool and cotton, despite that being an order from scripture.

I am concerned that fear of reprisal - as rational as it is in modern times - is ceding ground to the very worst and most intellectually dishonest practitioners of any faith, but that nobody has a monopoly on either virtue or barbarism - as Elizabeth Smart could tell you from THIS century in this country.

I think this awful racist woman's speech should have been protected unless specific harm could be proven, but she's not deserving of my sympathy even if her prosecution is. She was deliberately yelling the political equivalent of fire in a movie theater to provoke a reaction. The irony being that she has fundamentally weakened freedom of speech in that court's jurisdiction. So her strategy either backfired spectacularly if she really cared about freedom of speech, or succeeded magnificently if her intent was to stoke hatred and resentment.

Personally I think that religion has zero business in government or law, period. It is and should be a personal matter. Blasphemy is a device to control populations and smother dissent - and by rule only ever offends people, not gods. An omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent deity can handle sticks and stones, let alone names.

There's no easy binary answer here for pragmatists - but pragmatism among believers and unbelievers is going to be necessary to make our societies prosper and get along internally or internationally.The danger is that polite accommodations become enshrined in law and hidden resentment rather than argued in daylight and good faith (no pun intended).

If it were up to me I'd click my fingers and every religious person would suddenly adhere only to the good parts of their religion and abandon the bad - and we'd all share in the art and culture and history of each other's viewpoints and culture and it would boil down to polite conversation and agreeable discussion - but there's no infinity stone for that.

If I have a point then it is disappointment that society is being warped by racism at one end and terrorism at the other and that the loudest and most extreme voices are frequently dominating the conversation.

Having grown up in a country where the left had actual history and culture I can tell you that it was nothing like that. He is actually promising less government interference and giving more power to the Stated individually. The main reason people voted for him is due to his hard stance on crime. No one defends the shit he has said before, at most people say that he didn't mean it, or that he has changed. And indeed, there's nothing in his government plan that undermines minorities, take away civil rights or what we already have here.

But I'm not going to deny that he said some abhorrent shit before. I just don't think (and hope) that he's actually going to promote violence against minorities. Brazil is also a multi party system, so the president can't do whatever he wants.

Also, you can't evaluate the situation by looking at Bolsonaro exclusively. You have to consider his opponent, that is from the Worker's Party, which has been in power for the last 14 years (would be 16 if the president hadn't been impeached), his main leader is current in prison and their candidate kept going to the prison almost every day to get counseling on how should he proceed with the campaign.

The party was also promising to free Lula from prison if they won, some of the party leaders said that they should "take the power" after being elected and to remove some powers from the judiciary. The party also supports the bolivarian governments in South America, like Venezuela, which crisis is already impacting some poor States in Brazil. We also have 65 thousand murders each year here, economy was tanking hard and unemployment is very high. Bolsonaro is promising to fight all that, so he won a lot of points in there.

What I'm trying to say is that Brazilians didn't vote for fascism, didn't vote for minority persecution or whatever. Most of us know that Bolsonaro is pretty shady, but we don't actually believe that he will do anything harsh here with minorities or whatever. Unless he actually starts a dictartorship, he won't get away with anything bad done to the population.

Brazil is a country that does not have a strong culture of civic norms; politicians are in jail, corruption and street crime are high. These conditions do not make for a robust democracy.
