For sure, though I still think there isn't enough data on open-air and delta.

Anecdotally, my vaxed nephew contracted covid sitting in a garden with friends. They ordered food together, so I'm not sure if he was just a mong and shared some food or cutlery or something, or whether he really was as careful as he made out - but that could be an open air transmission. If I were you, I'd still exercise caution until there's more data.

"Friends" means gay lovers, "garden" means crack den, and "food" means heroin.

You need to keep up with the lingo.

I mean at the end of the day, even if you are outdoors, if a friend/someone is sitting/standing directly across from you and talking straight at your face from a couple feet away for a period of time, it shouldn't matter how diluted the stream is, if infected they are expelling covid particles non-stop straight at your face which you will be breathing in.

If you're outdoors at a garden/beach wherever walking past people and not having conversations with anyone, the transmission would probably be very low
since the particles are just flying around in the environment diluted by the wind.

Unfortunately the world has not created a distinction for outdoor activities between doing activities outdoors and talking to people outdoors.

But having face to face conversations with people unmasked just seems like a contagion vector no matter where you are. So yeah, having conversations with people, even vaccinated people, unmasked in the middle of a huge delta wave seems dangerous. Better to be anti-social or mask up.

The major difference between the Delta strain and others is that it can be passed on with only fleeting contact. There have been cases where the two people have just been passing each other in the street. This Delta strain is not the same corona virus we've been dealing with for the past 18 months.

Otoh, at the same time it's either not that infectious or the vaccines are working extremely well because the numbers would be exponentially higher than what the world is seeing right now if it was that transmittable. Those seem to be very rare one-off occasions.

Like a country or state with low vaccine rates and a virus that transmittable would basically infect 99% of the population within a week or two or three max.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-07-12/covid-19-antibodies-jakarta-almost-half-of-population/100285384

Quote
Results from an Indonesian health survey indicate almost half the entire population of Jakarta — 4.7 million people from a population of 10.6 million — have antibodies against COVID-19.

The serological survey, which tested for antibodies in the blood among residents across the capital, showed 44.5 per cent of Jakarta residents had tested positive for the SARS Cov-2 virus by March this year.

However, of the estimated number of residents who had been infected, only 8.1 per cent had actually been confirmed. The rest had gone undetected or had no symptoms at all.

I'd say vaccines are working

Does Florida have a really low vaccination rate?

I would have assumed with all the elderly people that make up the GOP base that there'd be a good vaccination rate as all these people get vaccinated so they don't drop dead.

Reaching herd immunity is "not a possibility" with the current Delta variant, the head of the Oxford Vaccine Group has said. Giving evidence to MPs on Tuesday, Prof Sir Andrew Pollard said the fact that vaccines did not stop the spread of Covid meant reaching the threshold for overall immunity in the population was "mythical." "The problem with this virus is [it is] not measles. If 95% of people were vaccinated against measles, the virus cannot transmit in the population," he told the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on coronavirus. "The Delta variant will still infect people who have been vaccinated. And that does mean that anyone who's still unvaccinated at some point will meet the virus ... and we don't have anything that will [completely] stop that transmission."

Although the existing vaccines are very effective at preventing serious Covid illness and death, they do not stop a fully vaccinated person from being infected by the virus that causes Covid-19. The concept of herd or population immunity relies on a large majority of a population gaining immunity -- either through vaccination or previous infection -- which, in turn, provides indirect protection from an infectious disease for the unvaccinated and those who have never been previously infected. Data from a recent React study conducted by Imperial College London suggests that fully vaccinated people aged 18 to 64 have about a 49% lower risk of being infected compared with unvaccinated people. The findings also indicated that fully vaccinated people were about half as likely to test positive after coming into contact with someone who had Covid (3.84%, down from 7.23%).

China partly shut the world’s third-busiest container port after a worker became infected with Covid, threatening more damage to already fragile supply chains and global trade as a key shopping season nears.

All inbound and outbound container services at Meishan terminal in Ningbo-Zhoushan port were halted Wednesday until further notice due to a “system disruption,” according to a statement from the port. An employee tested positive for coronavirus, the eastern Chinese city’s government said.

The closed terminal accounts for about 25% of container cargo through the port, calculates security consultant GardaWorld, which said “the suspension could severely impact cargo handling and shipping.” Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd AG said there will be a delay in sailings.

Im looking at the US summer surge last year, and the increases lasted between 2 and 3 months.

IE, the SD surge started with Surgis in August and didnt reach peak until November.

Our current surge can be traced directly to July 4th, so its been a month.

That means the current records being seen in the south have a lot of room to increase.

Ontario's cases are not great  :(

Is there anywhere in the world that is doing great?

Feels like Delta is too transmissible and is wrecking the world. Some places much worse than others like USA, but it's still causing problems almost everywhere.

It's pretty depressing that the world was starting to get past covid and then Delta destroyed so much progress. Feels inevitable with all these cases that a new major variant will come next, but maybe we'll be real lucky. The Lambda/Epsilon variants don't seem like a big deal thankfully. We still haven't hit any major monsterous transformation like what happened between the original strains -> Delta.

Feels like with how wildfire spreading Delta is, that in the soon future the world will be past Delta because it will just have maximized possible spread. So everything imo depends on the next variant and random luck. If no worse variant arises, I'd imagine the world will be mostly past covid (aka low cases worldwide) by early next year.

Separately, the public health agency said another variant on the rise in the U.K., a strain known as B.1.621 that was discovered in Colombia, has shown signs of evading the immune response triggered by Covid-19 vaccines or previous infection.

They've said that about every single variant so far. See the Lambda/Epilson news story on this page or the previous one. All these variants push back against antibodies, but so far they all just reduce the effectiveness and don't completely knock neutralize them.

Still definitely could happen, but these variants have to be out for a few months and studied before they figure out anything definitive on them.

Most of em are just regular markets. It'd be dumb as hell to get rid of them. Get rid of the ones with exotic animals and bad living conditions for the animals. Because that shit is terrible with or without the virus either way.

Another BBC gem yesterday:

Covid cases and hospital admissions down - is it over?

Today cases are back up to near 30K, from 21K yesterday.

That's ~40 times more cases than in August 2020 btw. When restrictions were essentially non-existent. With no vaccines.

I don't think it was a lab leak, or at least not some type of weaponized leak. I'd buy that it was just something from nature they were studying at that lab that got out. But I definitely don't think it came from the wet markets at this point.

Sure seems like it was already out and about in the world before that. Didn't they find that by the time of the wet market it had already been through five mutations?

I'm trying to judge Delta safety in the face of upcoming events and whether to get tickets or not.

Would you guys go to a indie seated musical indoors for 2-3 hours at warehouse with max capacity around 130 people if they required proof of vaccination and masks worn the entire time? And given that it's not a pitbull concert or something mainstream where dumbass people may use fake vaccine cards and shit, everyone really will be vaccinated (plus they are only taking scanned QR codes from the CA state website as proof).

I mean vaccinated + masked seems pretty safe and I haven't seen a single article about a delta spread caused between vaccinated people at a masked event. But just PTSD from the last 1.5 years has me hesitant about indoor stuff with 100 people+

Yes, because its impossible that a leaky lab could have been working on two genetically different strains at the same time.

Isn't that just indicating that the outbreak started well before the CCP admitted there was a problem? That it had been in the Wuhan population long enough to mutate?
