I’m feeling like we’ve been given multiple chances to get a handle on this thing, but nope... We keep fucking that up and now look at what we’re faced with now. The virus is mutating at a faster rate and could be outside the bounds of keeping up with a working vaccine/treatment.

We might not get another chance to slow this thing down again. And I’m questioning if the government's of the world get what is truly at stake here this time around. Lock it the fuck down!

My father and his wife are not able to work due to their complications and lingering issues as a result of COVID-19. Both got their shots this past week, meanwhile my 86 year old grandfather can’t get his yet... I was already of the mind that it’d be April by the time I could consider getting it.

On one hand, the numbers are going down FAST. Globally. It's incredible to see.

On the other hand, everyone who got a first shot is running out to celebrate at a crowded indoor bar (including my friend...) and theres a chance they might all catch the south african strain and start the party all over again.

Theres a non-zero chance we're in the exact same spot we were a year ago, when we all knew corona was a thing, but we werent really doing anything about it

For reference, this is where we were a year ago

So apart of my work is in events and there’s a big show next week with 70% Chinese attendance, one sales girl is refusing to go but wants her bonus even though she’ll potentially lose sales because not going. If I’m going you’re going. I got some hand sanitizer and a mask, despite feeling I’m already infected. We shall see!

Feel like this whole thing is petering out idk.

I wonder if the number of testing has gone down as the focus shifted to vaccine distribution. Which might explain why the numbers are dropping at such a high rate. I have to get a test before I can see my specialist and I had to get an appointment for that more than a week ago. Which leads me to think that might be a contributing factor here.

I finished quarantine, medically cleared already, and still recovering. Symptoms were severe back pain, brain fog, sinus pressure, and an ear infection which is still causing me equilibrium and balance issues. It feels like I'm constantly walking on a boat. CA is opening up the possibility of 16-64 w/health issues getting shots starting March 15th, but the categories are extremely narrow bullshit.

There's one exception that I may be able to get in under, where "If getting covid-19 would prevent patient from getting on-going treatment essential to their well-being & survival" since if I get covid, the official regulation is to stop my med infusions which I need for my well-being & survival.

But it seems like it's going to be a health provider aka doctor & doctor facility call and my doctor is not very empathetic and pretty robotic so next week gonna have to hit his office up and start my arguments of why I should be included in this group. Also it looks like the general vaccine app places aren't setup for this kind of stuff yet, so I get the feeling the vaccinations for these groups may be at the doctor's office/hospital itself or something.

Fingers crossed I can get it and maybe get my first dose by April 1, 2nd by May 1.

Otherwise, if I can't get in this group and CA isn't planning on widening the 16-64 w/health conditions group before going public, may not get it until summer/fall when it's wide release :|

The virus is a hoax people filed a lawsuit to lift the Dutch curfew and won. A judge declared it illegal. :doge
Now there's talk about the government having to repay the fines and perhaps more COVID measures currently in place are illegal.

The appeal hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Welp the Medical Director of Pfizer was confronted by the fact that the company paid almost no taxes over their 15 billion Euro profit last year while local businesses are struggling. He was asked if he agreed it was shameful the company had organized their finances, patents etc. in such a way. He replied that it was rude to ask such a question considering the company is saving the world and that all corporations do the same thing.

Our government has officially reinstated the curfew.

Also hinted at no easing of measures after March 2. Our PM said he wasn't very hopeful that a reduction in measures was possible and that a 3rd wave is still imminent.

NIOSH (who set the air filtration requirements for US respirators, eg: N95) completed a study in 2020-12 that analyzed how much particulate makes its way through exhalation valves on non-elastomeric respirators. This was done with proper seals and a afaict all front-facing valves keep in mind.

This is interesting to me since they directly address the statements by some that respirators with valves are 'useless' in protecting others, and quote statements made that such respirators as 'good as wearing nothing at all'  ::)

They found them to be on average as good and sometimes better at mitigation (1-55% penetration) as common masks worn that lack exhalation valves (divided into three categories: surgical, procedural (which look virtually identical), cloth).

Cloth masks come out of this looking particularly bad, with 45-92% penetration through the fabric. Procedural masks had between 1-85% penetration, surgical between 2-17% (however they note that this doesn't account for regular fitment and in a prior NIOSH study when worn normally was between 7%-76% penetration).

They then tested the CDC's current recommendations for source control for valved respirators which is covering the valve with a surgical mask externally which they found is the least effective method of those they tested. Covering the valve with an ECG pad or surgical tape internally is highly effective, reducing the penetration to just 5% maximum.

They've yet to test elastomer respirators, which they say is something that would be useful to follow-up with, which I'd be interested in as there are models with downfacing exhalation valves, some of which are specifically marketed for medical use.

The UK strain is way more infectious with children, great for the US trying to force all schools open despite teachers saying no fucking way
We have opened the schools but not yet the high schools and universities, some immediately closed because of infections the next day or week.
However, people are calling for more schools to open, considering a wave of depression among young people who are now going to run 2 years behind on their education and careers.

Another generation completely fucked.  :doge

Welp, newspapers have written extensively about the new plans and strategy of our government to open up the economy.
It all started when our failing health minister told everyone that even if recent pilots with reopening events were succesful it would not mean they would open up again.
Next, the government said that they thought it was unlikely we would have sports events with audiences this year or that any restrictions would be lifted in the near future.

The experts have told them a 3rd wave is coming, and possibly a 4th wave and a 5th wave and.... because of the mutations.
And that the chances that mass vaccination will end the pandemic this year are slim and that testing for contact tracing and/or isolating cases is next to useless.

So the plan is to use the one thing that is 'still' cheap and available to open up the economy: tests. Our government is stocking up not just on vaccines but on millions and millions of tests.
Under new legislation you would receive a permit if you test negative. That permit would allow you to enter universities, offices, restaurants, shops, theatres, events etc. for up to 48 hours.
Basically if you want to do something during the weekends you would need to get a test every week. Although they might limit the number of permits to control the size of crowds and gatherings.
They're currently talking to business and industrial leaders who will need to enforce this. If the ruling parties win the elections than the plan is to implement this between April and June.

What they haven't figured out yet is how to handle the costs. Currently if you want to take a flight you need to do a test that costs $200 out of your own pocket.
They're probably looking to make a deal with business leaders to split the costs as they desperately want and need the economy to reopen.

This is what normal people do

Quote
I literally can’t even bring it up in the office, even though you hear rows upon rows of people coughing their lungs out and have been doing so for a week (not even calling off and using their pto, selfish bastards).

When I bring up how I have already started preparing for the virus with stock piling n95 masks and bulk rice and other non perishable foods they look at me like I need to go to the psych ward and either laugh at me or call me fear mongering.

They refuse to look at what’s going on in the rest of the world and literally think they live in an isolated island and nothing could ever had happen to their loved ones or their community.

I understand that you still need to live you life. But at the same time being informed and being prepared is only a positive not a negative. Hell, people put spare tires in their trunks of their cars. Not because they expect a flat tire that day/week/month but because it’s smart to be prepared in case you do get a flat.

Meanwhile, I say I buy masks and buy reserved food and I’m crazy. What the hell man.
