Saw some concept art from Affleck's Batman the other week. They were going back to the Bale/Nolan style? I liked the comic book gray and black he had in previous movies.

I'm still processing the Hans Zimmer concert. Just as I come across this video.

Hearing the DUNE theme live was incredible. They had all those weird self-made instruments and the actual vocalist at the concert (she actually did Gladiator too (after just an afternoon of practice) because Lisa had tested positive for COVID).
But there was also a version of the Dark Knight theme with probably the deepest bass I've ever felt in my life and it just kept getting louder and louder. In fact the entire building was literally shaking.

And once you had processed all that he brought out a different vocalist who had discovered during practice she could sing as high pitched as a violin.

Unlike the previous concert I went to in 2017 which was great too but with a simple structure of a song a bit of talk about the movie it was from and then another song, this was truely as Zimmer called it a big celebration of music.
In 2017 he had an orchestra of about ~70 people this time there weren't as many performers but it was the 'official' Hans Zimmer band with the guitarist, flautist, vocalists etc. .
The stage and light effects were insane too.

I hope the Amsterdam performance is the version they use for the Blu Ray release even though Lisa wasn't there. For the previous Blu Ray release they used the 2016 Prague recording, which was missing a few songs he did in Amsterdam in 2017 with special guests. For example, the Wonder Woman theme was performed live in Amsterdam for the first time by Tina Guo but missing from the BD release as well as a few solo performances and guest appearances.

They were filming on stage at the Amsterdam event but I couldn't tell if it was just for promotion or the Blu-Ray.
I imagine they would have to make a few cuts for the international release though, like the part where he trashed the Oscars and Will Smith and used phrases like 'that was fucking amazing' after a crazy guitar solo.

The Last Duel was really great. Ridley Scott's best since Kingdom of Heaven.

Listening to a conversation with him, I've never heard him speak outside of commentary. Any movie the interviewer mentions, from Black Rain to GI Jane, he goes "fucking great movie!" Any actor, he goes "fucking love nicholas cage, the twat." When asked about shooting in Ireland, he goes "it's always fucking raining." Closest thing to a break or vacation he's taken was filming A Good Year. Cool dude.

Did Bright just start life as a Shadowrun film and then they lost the licence?

Seems to have some similarities that made me think that when I watched it.

Speaking of Shadowrun, a TV adaptation would be great.

I'm going to say that he played a lot of Shadowrun before he wrote it then. The setting is basically identical except for being light on the cyberpunk.

Finally sat down and watched Licorice Pizza

Weird movie, but was good. It feels like the kind of movie that should've been PT Anderson's first movie around his Hard Eight era, except made with all the skill he's amassed over his decades of filmmaking. Feels more about "hey the early 70s were weird" than anything. Also feels a bit weirdly anime in that the way the main gal is written is like super Tsundere tropey. Also the main gal and her entire family actually just being the band Haim and their parents just adds to the strangeness of the film. Just an odd movie overall, but well made and pretty enjoyable.

It felt like one of those gimmick short story books where the stories are not connected but two characters appear in each story.  Some kind of consistent throughline or specific POV of the times would of been welcome.

Yeah, my friend said the same thing, that it felt like a series of vignettes. I saw that at times, but i thought it still held together enough.

The Linklatter mention is spot on, it's a Linklatter kind of flick, but stylistically it feels very P.T. Anderson.

I don't like The Master, it's the only film of his I don't like, so I'd put this above that, but I think it's weaker than the rest of his catalogue. Still quality though, would give it a 3.5/4.

Watched Spielberg's West Side Story remake.

Never seen a movie look so authentically like it was made in the time period before. The set design, costume work. cinematography and direction is really stellar. The musical sequences are busy and dynamic. Very technically impressive.

But like idk what Speilberg saw in Ansel Elgort, dude feels incredibly miscast. Everyone else is thin, grimey and muscled in the face and he's just this pretty dough boy who looks like he's in an isekai where he stepped into this movie from 2020. It's not like he's a great singer or dancer. Just seems a weird miscast.

Also the last 30 mins kind of loses steam and peters out. The first 2 hours through the rumble is really good, but then it's like the movie gives up and stops caring and is just getting the rest done to hit the credits.

NYT: New Era Begins at Warner Bros., Tinged With Nostalgia

Quote
By 2018, almost every golden-age Hollywood studio had been conquered by outside forces.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had been tossed between disruptive owners for decades, never to fully recover. Columbia Pictures was sold to Coca-Cola in 1982 and then offloaded to Sony in 1989. Universal had weathered five outside takeovers in the span of 21 years. Paramount Pictures had been strip mined for cash by an ailing Sumner Redstone.

Warner Bros. alone stood as Hollywood’s citadel, a beige-walled protectorate of filmmakers run by executives with institutional Hollywood knowledge.

Then AT&T drove into town.
Quote
Already, Mr. Zaslav has vanquished tech leaders brought in by AT&T, including Jason Kilar, who made his name at Hulu and Amazon, and Andy Forssell, who came up through Oracle and Hulu. Also departing is Ann Sarnoff, who AT&T hired to run Warner Bros. in 2019 despite limited Hollywood experience. During her tenure, Ms. Sarnoff reworked the Warner Bros. shield logo, dropping the gold trim in favor of AT&T blue. On Friday, Mr. Zaslav restored the gold.

Definitely feels good to have the gold/yellow back. I also like how it's not tall/squished together anymore. Feels right.

Quote
“Success is about creative talent, in front of the screen, and behind the screen, and fighting and fighting to create a culture that supports that creative vision,” Mr. Zaslav said when announcing the takeover. For much of the past year, he has rhapsodized about the studio’s rich legacy, repeatedly paying tribute to Jack, Harry, Sam and Albert Warner, “the brothers who started it all.”

TALK TO ME ZAS BABY :rejoice

Quote
On Friday, Mr. Zaslav talked about his aspirations to “dream big and dream bold” in an email sent to his new employees. “Hallelujah,” one Warner Bros. manager said in a text message afterward. Another executive at the studio, speaking by phone, said she was going on a “wild” shopping spree to celebrate, adding, “Hollywood is back, baby.”

Others were not so sure. [...] Under Ms. Sarnoff, Warner Bros. slashed its annual theatrical output by nearly half and built a direct-to-streaming assembly line. “The good old days are gone forever,” one Warner-affiliated film producer said on Friday.
Quote
Mr. Horn continued: “David’s willingness to go around town and seek the advice of dozens of people has spoken volumes. It’s how you build trust.”

Mr. Zaslav will “work with a passion to rebuild the studio’s relationship with the creative community,” Mr. Daly said. “You’ve got to support the talent,” he added. “It’s a bit like children: Don’t spoil them too much, but make them feel loved.”

:lol That's actually pretty accurate, from actors to writers to directors to pretty much everyone.

If Zas wants to prove his mettle, he'll moneyhat Nolan back into the fold after Oppenheimer.

That's a good one.  I'd also recommend Ah Kam.  It's a neat look at the world of Hong Kong stunt performers.  And of course they play the footage of her breaking her back (legit) several times during the end credits.

Other good pre-Hollywood movies for her are Yes Madam!, Police Story 3 (Supercop), Project S (Supercop 2), Wing Chun, Tai Chi Master, The Heroic Trio, and Executioners (Heroic Trio 2).

So it was shot in SD, scaled to HD+, downsampled to SD again to remove 'false details' introduced, then upscaled again (from that final master?) recently using a neural network. Seems like a roundabout way to do it, unless it was actually upscaled from the source and the article isn't super clear about it.

I mean it's almost four hours unfiltered David Lynch by way of early-2000s camcorder footage, no matter the story or acting not everyone is gonna get over that hump. But it's a spellbinding work (probably better served as an HBO miniseries), and it probably is Laura Dern's best work. Very excited by the thought of possibly watching it in higher quality than a camcorder, it took me more than one attempt to watch and finish back in the day but I'm glad I did.

I'm excited by this 4K upscale even if I'm waiting on footage since yeah, not too sure of the details right now.

From a tech perspective, I can't imagine that it won't be a total mess visually.
