Looks bad and dumb but I haven't seen Space jam since I was a kid and I might think a trailer for that now would look bad and dumb.  If kids like it, that's really all that matters for a movie like this.

I just don’t get any Brie Larson fandom that’s out there.  She just seems so...meh, like a stale and unsalted saltine.  Maybe it’s my generalized antipathy toward white girls...

I enjoyed Kong: Skull Island well enough when I watched, but I couldn’t tell you any of what happened in that movie, I found it pretty forgettable.

Strangely I liked her enough... until Endgame. And then the spell broke or something and all that hype and expectation I had built up for Captain Marvel failed to be delivered on. They wasted Infinity War's post-credits on her and she basically does jack in the sequel.

Rumor was they were trying to team her with Spidey/Tom Holland, and I could see that chemistry being weird enough to work. But otherwise I totes agree.

I don’t think she’s bad or anything like that, just boring to watch, like a female version of Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

In fairness, I haven’t yet seen Room, and I’m told she’s good in that.

I don't get the hate.  She is meh but at the same level as Jeremy Renner.  I'm not going out of my way to watch their non-marvel movies but I'm fine with them being in movies I watch.

I quite liked Kong: Skull Islands 'nam flick vibes, especially John C Reilly hamming it up, and John Goodman as the Monsterverse Nick Fury :idont

speaking of John C Reilly, I also recently watched the Sisters Brothers, which is a weird ass - but enjoyable - film.
Tonally it veers between comedy and melodrama, and often defies genre expectations as a Western, while still heavily leaning into others.
And its just fucking weird seeing John c Reilly as a bad ass gunslinger, quickdrawing an enemy gang down single handed.

All the 'nam shit is surface level, the 70s soundtrack is overbearing, John C Reilly is John C Reilly (literally could swap his char in this movie with one of his many others with zero change), and every other sentence of dialogue is some form of cliche or trope. I can't connect with any character because there aren't any characters. Everything is just so stock. "What if Kong, but Apocalypse Now?" Not much thought went into the plot beyond that it feels like.

Sad part is compared to other Cinematic Universe attempts, or other modern blockbusters, it feels fresh enough. But on the vast spectrum of film it's a lesser Vietnam film and a lesser Kong film.

Feels really strange to not like Kong but to like Godzilla VS Kong.  Like I like them both, but they are both vapid in the same way.  But I guess that's also the thing with these movies, they are vapid so it's either you like them at a gut level or just see their issues.

She was good in Short Term 12 too, but she's definitely a better celebrity than an actor. All those press junkets and interviews and panel discussions where it's the same bunch of morons asking you the same dumb questions... actors these days spend more time "being a celebrity" and doing marketing for a movie than actually working on the fucking movie. She's great at raising her profile which for actors these days essentially entails being as boring and inoffensive as possible.

Vapid isn't the problem with Kong or the two Godzilla movies (haven't watched this latest one).
I mean yeah Godzilla originally had more of a message, but i don't think anyone was expecting that from the new ones.

The problem is all in the craft.
the two Godzilla movies especially, and the second one in particular, were such a mess in my opinion, just gave me a headache.

I think Pacific Rim was better than all three in selling the Kaiju concept in Big Budget, Live Action form.
Probably because it was more cartoony (in its world and characters) and restrained (in its action set pieces and camera work) at the same time.
Making for a more fun, but less vomit inducing experience.

I kind of hated the 2014 Godzilla, even though it had a lot of elements I really liked, so my hope is that this new one has some of those elements without all the bullshit.

Kong v Godzilla was the worst movie I've seen since 2006. And I'm just saying 2006 because in my mind that's about when Transformers came out.

I have no idea how this has a positive RT. The human stuff is just as bad as 2014 and King of the Monsters. And the action set pieces are a bunch of wrestling CG  :snore

Also Godzilla is a total fucking chump.

I have a soft spot for King of the Monsters because at least 1/2 the movie of monster fighting is pretty rad, but honestly Kong: Skull Island is the only actually "good" film of this group because it's the only one where the human side story was actually watchable thanks to the script, the cast and the fact it was a marvel-esque tone action comedy. These movies take themselves 100% seriously and OMG IT IS SO BAD.

It's such a unique artifact of the time though, especially as a new/independent IP. 2009 is so modern in Hollywood terms but the film itself is so amazingly quaint.

Watched Eric Andre's Bad Trip. I've only seen clips of his stuff over the year and didn't realize this was gonna be a Borat style prank movie. Some of the stuff was pretty gross, but sometimes the grosser stuff was the funniest so it was all good. Some of the reactions from people are just lollllllllllllll, definitely laughed a ton at parts.

Concrete Cowboy was good. I thought it was really well directed and acted and it's especially cool that some of the actors are the actual Fletcher St. Cowboys. The script is the weakest link, it's ok but kinda of predictable. If it had a stronger story it could've been really great, but it's still a good watch.

Caleb McLaughin gives a extremely good performance. I watched it for Elba, whose good as always, but McLaughin is the best actor in the movie.

90s:
-Post-Soviet optimism
-Strong economic growth
-End of the American crime wave
-The internet was cool
-Rise of liberal democracies
-Climate change still slow and seemingly manageable
-Bill Nye

Post-90s:
-Endless War on Terror
-Economic malaise and speeding up of boom/bust cycle
-Worldwide pandemic
-Internet dominated by corporations and vapid celebrities
-Collapse of left-wing parties and rise of right-wing wannabe dictators
-Climate change speeding up and seemingly unmanageable

I watched that Godzilla vs Kong a couple nights ago tripping on mushrooms with the woman. Jesus Christ what a dumb movie. Near the 3/4 point, I was in uncontrollable tears laughing at how stupid it is. When Kong got the axe, I said "At the end, he is going to need godzilla to charge up his axe to defeat the mecha godzilla. My partner asked if that is how we will refer to sex from now on. "Charge my axe baby, charge my axe!". Sure enough, that is what happened.

Visually it was very pleasing, though.
