Watched the first episode of The Boys. Seems ok. Will definitely give episode 2 a shot and make my mind up after that.
It actually gets worse as it goes along, it's pretty mediocre with everything except psycho Superman, in my opinion.
I still found it entertaining enough to watch though.

I like the concept, but I am sceptical about the execution of a coherent and believable story. Same problem I have with all superhero-based stuff.

The concept of "superhero world from the common man's POV" gets abandoned real quick, in favor of just another superhero story, but with the edgy bent of more violence and swear words, which is why i think it gets "worse" as it goes along.
Even the main protagonist forgets about his dead GF by like, episode 3, just to have the predictable romance sub-plot with the supergirl.

I figured that was where it was heading. I think the only character I was interested in from episode 1 was Karl Urban's. Everyone else seemed a bit blah. He could go full comic book ham really fast though, so...

Yup... it's that weird combo of light hearted / edgy that can be fun if you get into the mood.  If you wanted to watch the main character mourn for 8 episodes I'm not sure you are watching the right show.
Then it shouldn't try to have its heartfelt moments, too.
If you undermine the emotional depth of your characters in the name of edgy fun, you cant expect me to care about the straight man's internal conflicts.
I wouldn't expect a character epiphany when i watch Crank.
This constantly bounces from trashy fun to attempting poignancy, i think it should stick to one.

I did call it "entertaining", anyway.  :yeshrug

I also remember not liking the first episode as much as the rest. I forget why? Maybe the first episode was a little sillier or something, or maybe it was just because it was the pilot.

Shockingly, Bojack Horseman ends on a downer ending for almost everyone concerned, if anyone was sticking it through to see if it had anything uplifting to say or was going to make any kind of redemptive arc.

Finished The Good Place.

If that wasn't a perfect ending to the show, I don't know what else would have been better. It was great.

I am looking forward to re-watching it at some point, but the amount of ugly crying I did at the end doesn't need to be repeated soon.

the wanda vision trailer looks like its tapping the same vein as Too Many Cooks or that episode of supernatural where they're trapped in TV pastiches, but once you have 'oh they're in a fake TV world and they're trapped by a baddie' how much mileage do you get out of that before you need a resolution?

Have been watching the final season of The Man in the High Castle.
I like how they're finally diving deeper in John Smith's character and history.

Overall I'm a big fan of this series, the only gripe being that in the earlier seasons they focused on the wrong characters and side plots that went nowhere
and they kept bringing back people with already completed stories.

If it's even a quarter as good as the the vision comics I think it's based on it's gonna be solid. The book was more about Vision essentially losing his mind trying to wrap his head around being human though so and so far this kinda looks like they just ran with the tv aesthetics they used for the covers.

So, The Boys is pretty fun and I'm enjoying it a lot.

However, I can't help but think that Amazon's originals suffer from the reverse problem that Netflix's Marvel stuff had.

While the Netflix shows just dragged on waaaaaay too long, The Boys could really do with some exploration of the superheroes just doing their everyday job. It kinda feels like Starlight and the rest of the Seven just sit around all day moping and don't actually get out there to rescue anyone.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
They really could have done with making them a little more sympathetic before dragging them down to supervillain levels of not giving a fuck. I'm at Ep5 and every single scene I can recall is just them straight up murdering people or not giving a flying fuck about anyone. They really needed to sell me on them being legitimate heroes to the general populace more.

I mean, have you been actually watching the show? The whole point is that they aren't "real" heroes. They're walking talking brands with everything they doing being okay'd and vetted by corporate. Including only saving ppl the corp tells them and then it's only low-risk high publicity saves. The whole army subplot is explicitly about them gaining access to international markets.

I am well aware they're not "real" heroes and they are the antagonists. However, my point was that their "cover" would be a little more believable if they were actually shown on screen doing some super hero shit. They basically do nothing but mope around on screen being all evil and stuff.

The show needs to sell it to me more that the general public actually reveres these arseholes, because it doesn't show me any reason why they would.

The public reveres them because they're celebrities backed by a multi-billion dollar with pr and multimedia departments? Butcher pretty much explains this exact situation to Huey in the first episode? Not to mention pretty much quite a few opening on some kinda pr stunt, charity events etc. We revere ppl for less irl.

I dunno how 'into it' the TV shows gonna get, but in the comics the X-men expys are just a big paedo ring for not-professor-x.

they also have a big 'crossover event' every summer while all the heroes supposedly go off into space to fight some big bad then come back victorious, when in actuality they're just on a desert island tearing through coke and hookers

Yes. The show tells me lots about them and their superhero status, but does not do a good job of showing me that side, it just shows me their bad deeds. Surely they can show me that they do some crime fighting that succeeds?

That's because the Boys takes like 3 story arcs from the comics and condenses them into a single short season.

Anyway, I think you're missing my point a bit here.

Part of the point, at least in the comic, is that all the typical super hero stuff is a total bullshit put on. It's all manufactured, and the super heroes are just bored godlike beings who largely gave up on any pretense of morality ages ago. They keep up with the kayfabe for financial reasons mostly.
