The DC panels at Comic Con were really good. Except for this really annoying bitch who went to EVERY SINGLE panel and got to the mic to grill DC as to why they have no female characters at all and no women working for the company.

Devin Greyson wrote a lot of Batman comics, but I don't know if she's still with DC.

It is great, but I feel very unclean after reading it. Yes, Jason Aaaron, I know all that shit is happening to Indians right now in the real world. No, I don't think you choose that setting because you just had to write about Indian life and culture - I think you choose it because all that heinous shit going on is what people want to see in their drama. But still, yeah, can't stop reading.

it does feel kind of exploitative at times, but i do love the casino owner character and his really complex relationship with those around him, namely Dashiel's mother.

The Hmong element though?  That just feels really trashy.  As though he couldn't hold the story together without some Ennis-esque character going around cutting people's eyeballs out.

Yeah, eyeball-abuse is the greatest cliche in Vertigo books...I wonder if Karen Berger has some kind of fetish. I don't need to be 'shocked' constantly to stay awake if the actual storytelling is good (which it is).

The only other criticism I have of Scalped is that it is blatantly a TV drama on paper. It wants to be The Wire/Sopranos/Sons of Anarchy/Breaking Bad so bad it hurts.

I have 1-4, but will pass on 5.

I got them all from amazon, and I really should have returned #1 (despite the huge bath I'd have taken on international postage). The binding was a mess - it came apart as I read it. The other ones were fine but watch out for that. They are pretty huge books so I'd imagine this is a common issue. They are fun as hell to read though - feels like you are reading from the Book of Destiny. You want to stand up and put them on a plinth.

Having said that, I just pre-ordered the IDW Wally Wood Artist Edition book - 22" x 15"! What the fuck! I have no idea what I'm gonna do with it.

Some info on the Wally Wood book if anyone is interested:

https://shop.idwpublishing.com/wally-wood-s-ec-stories-artist-s-edition-pre-order-1.html

I also have the Simonson book ordered, and there is no way I can resist either the upcoming Eisner Spirit book or the Romita Spider-man one. Fuuuuuuuuuuuu

Pretty sure these will at least double in value in a year or less but these will be strictly reading copies! I may even cut out and frame some pages. It'd still be waaaaaay cheaper than buying the original art. I am :drool'ing thinking about what other artists they might give this treatment to. Miller? Toth? Quitely? KIRBY??

been debating getting that. The preview bits they had up on Crumb and Cerebus were really good. Supergods is great stuff but it's as much about Morrison's life and views as it is comics, so how much you like it will depend on your tolerance for G-Mo (mine is sky-high)

love him.  I'll probably start it after I finish Good Calories, Bad Calories.

I have books 5-7 of Scalped, I Kill Giants, and the first volumes of Dororo and Black Jack.  I just read Ayoko and I think it's probably the absolute best thing I've read from Tezuka.

Black Jack is my MOST favorite. Dororo is great, too. I mean - everything Tezuka does is awesome.

I Kill Giants isn't so bad - I didn't like it as much as some.

I should probably read Supergods, I am okay with Morrison's amazing floating brain.

Taking advantage of the high yen to pick up some stuff from my amazon wish list (this is just the stuff that arrived today...!)

Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay Many More Splendid Sundays! vol 2

This is the current record holder for 'Hugest-ass book in my collection', although I think the new Wally Wood book might give it a run for its money when it arrives...iPad shown for scale

Also: Milt Caniff's Terry and the Pirates vols 1 and 2 from IDW (who are putting out some seriously god tier reprints these days, giving fantagraphics a run for their money)

i just got this in

Quote
Before there were 3-D movies there were 3-D comics! In the mid-fifties comic book great Joe Kubert hit upon the idea of doing comics in 3-D, which resulted in some of the best-selling comics of all time, with print runs in the millions! Eisner Award winner Craig Yoe collects the best of these stories and samples by artists like Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Bob Powell, Al Jaffee, Russ Heath, Milt Stein, Alex Toth, and many more! Carefully re-mastered and reproduced in large format so that every dynamic, eye-popping effect can be looked at in astonishment! The comics cover every genre: superhero, jungle adventures, horror comics, science fiction, funny animals, satire, western and romance! Features a fascinating, behind-the-scenes introduction by the mastermind behind 3-D comics himself, Mr. Joe Kubert! Rare art and ephemera as only Yoe Books does it! And, yes, of course, it comes with special FREE 3-D GLASSES! BUT WAIT! There's more! This must-have hardback book boasts a special linticular 3-D cover that puts the amazing in Amazing 3-D Comics!

I saw some of these back in the 80s when there was a mini3D comic boom (I had the Captain EO 3D Comic, for example) but this looks to be far better than the horrible reprints that were available then.

9-panel grid x 2 page spread = 18 simultaneous stories of birth, life, and death. You can read it spread-by-spread or follow one panel/story up and down the ages. Amazing formalist accomplishment, and pretty good comix too.

That's okay...I probably wouldn't go past the first volume though.   :lol  Gail Simone stayed on until #12, but Ed Benes left and the story seemed to follow the artwork in going to shit.  I haven't read the last seven or so issues, so maybe it gets better.  Doubtful, but the last story arc takes place in the past and is all about the original Black Canary and Phantom Lady.

But the book's already been canceled to make room for the new Birds Of Prey series.  One look at the cover and you know it's headed to cancel-ville too!

Quote from: Craig Thompson
The book will be $29.95 — 672 b&w pages — clothbound hardcover with stamped gold foil, and look something like the mock-up above. On the
right are a handful of cover ideas that didn’t make the cut.

it's about a prostitute and a eunuch. something something humanizing islam. dunno, I loved blankets so I haven't bothered looking for any info other than a release date.

not really an edit at all:
Quote from: wiki
Habibi is a forthcoming graphic novel by Craig Thompson. It will be published by Pantheon in September 2011, about seven years after Thompson began work on it.[1] At 672 pages, it is Thompson's longest work to date.[2]

The story involves slavery, religion, and "a love story between a prostitute and a eunuch."[3] Particular focus is given to Islam: Thompson said that he was motivated by a "desire to humanize Islamic culture, instead of it always being vilified"[4] and that the book is "like an Arabian Nights tale of my own making."[3] The word "Habibi" is Arabic for "my beloved."[5]
