I wouldn't mind a Lost Odyssey sequel so long as they got rid of Uchi-guchi as writer.  Seriously, LO's plot was so unbelievably predictable and generic.  Ask the guy who wrote the short stories to compose the main plot.

Hopefully Versus will have multiplayer, it would be awesome to battle other players in a Pokemon-esque online arena.

Get that shit out of here.

I know I'd spend a lot of hours playing VS13 if it had some kickass multiplayer. I mean, I get that Final Fantasy players don't want multiplayer, but think about it; Chocobo VS Chocobo in a bigass arena each with different stats and abilities.

That shit would be awesome.

No argument there. Also, make sure the kids are grown if they have to be in it.

Agreed.  The only other things I would request is that they streamline the whole ring crafting system (there were way too many rings and switching them out battle-to-battle was a pain), and get rid of level caps for each area (where after you reach a certain level, the XP you get from a fight dwindles to nothing).  Fix those three glaring flaws and a Lost Odyssey sequel could really be amazing.

LO is not amazing, it's generic pap.  A sequel could be amazing if they actually, y'know, fixed its numerous problems.

Using the PD Scale-o-Meter, LO would rank like a 6.5322 out of 10.

Level cap was fucking shit because you usually hit it around when you were in the middle of exploring the area and it made every single battle afterwards completely fucking pointless.

It's not.  It's a good rpg, but not a great one.  Kinda like FFXIII.

now Blue Dragon on the other hand...
Shame all the BD sequels were on DS.  A BD2 on X360 could've been zomg

Maybe if BD had sold twice what it actually did on 360 that could've been a reality.

Instead, Mistwalker has now moved on to the fucking Wii.

I really liked it, but I'm not gonna call it amazing. First game I almost got 1000/1000 for, but I didn't know what skills my immortals were missing and treasure trove is a bitch. Had to settle for 900/1000.

I think the problem is that all the Mistwalker X360 games (well uh, the 2 of them) were two teams first projects.  So they had a lot of good in them but they weren't perfect and didn't make everyone happy.  In an ideal world, the sales would have been ok, MS would have financed sequels and the two teams would have come out with new rpgs based on their experience with the X360 and feedback from gamers/reviews.  They would have been more "grown-up" products.
But unfortunately even though LO sold pretty decent and BD was the best selling game in Japan, MS didn't finance sequels and the teams went on to DS/Wii and N3-2  :-\

I'd prefer if battles in an RPG actually posed a threat so they don't need to give you XP to have a "point".  Wishful thinking in today's world, I know.

I don't think LO is a good game, but I will say the concept was great and the potential for greatness is still there for a good sequel.

It's certainly no Mass Effect.  Mass Effect shits all over Lost Odyssey. :rock

I think reviewers should just use arbitrary fractions for their scores and change the denominator every time.  That way, at least stupid people would have a harder time comparing scores.  If that doesn't work you could move to using roots of polynomials.

I thought Blue Dragon was great.  It's old school gameplay in a modern package.  It had a lot of potential for a great series but considering Mistwalker frittered away its potential on the DS, I guess it won't.

I put FFXIII on my Gamefly queue so I'll probably get it in April or some shit.  It will probably be crusted with many layers of fanboy jism.

People are making too big of deal about this game because they took too damn long to bring it out (even though they made it in < 2 years.

The game took around 6 years to make with multiple iterations and across two generations of systems. They were also using the time to fine tune their Crystal Tools set for easy next-generation development (lol).

The actual production period was like 1.5 years and then .5 years of polishing according to the development history that was leaked.  There was a lot of pre-production and time spent going "what should we do", but the actual game only took about 2 years to make.  SE saw the PS3 tanking at release and didn't want to fund hundreds of staff working on it so they all worked on other projects with only the few core staff on the game until SE was finally serious about making it and then the real team came in and made it in a very reasonable time.

There's no reason why SE couldn't have a mainline HD FF out every 2 years if they wanted to.

OK, so hearing about the "tube" level design, I'm curious how representative this map is of the typical areas in this game...

This type of map seems no more linear than what you see in games like Mass Effect 2 or a number of other standard JRPGs.  Is this map an exception then?

the problem ain't with BioWare games having linear maps

the problem is that completely linear FF13 comes from this:
Borys, that FF12 map still doesn't appear all that wide open.

Every FF game is different from the last, however, and FF12 was far and away the most open ended game in the series.  What I'm saying is, the dungeons in FFXIII don't really seem all that different from many of the older installments in the series.

This is just one map I googled. The point is the whole world in FF12 was open-ended. You could travel from one point on the west side to the other on the east side via different routes/ maps. AFAIK FF13 has none of that.
Nor has any other game in the series.  FFXII was a unique game and it was naive to expect another one.  That never ever happens with the series.

I don't think anyone expected it to be as linear as it is, but they also shouldn't have expected another XII.
