Feinstein likely hoped to extend the hearings. But either way he was getting confirmed so...

Kavanaugh strikes me as significantly more partisan than the other options. He's another Alito.

We're overdue for Great Depression Recession 3: Tokyo Drift, do you think they're going to duck that before the 2020 elections or something?

To spare this thread a tedious digression: it's always good to win elections unless you're utterly incapable of wielding political power. You might have ducked X, but there's a Y that's going to fall on you anyway so do what you can when you can.

Rationalizing a political pasting on the grounds that it's energized the base / set the stage for something better is not advised in general, but especially not so when there's a looming recession that's going to be bad for everyone without obscene wealth.

E: Doubly so if you're the Democratic Party which despite balancing the budget, implementing pay-go, and not throwing 2 forever wars and some tax cuts on the credit card is still regarded as a tax and spend party by a nontrivial slice of the minority that votes.

Right? Obama should have put the parties responsible in prison.

Then there’s the fact that democrats don’t vote during mid-terms. Saying republicans don’t feel repercussions at the national level for their poor economic policies is...wrong. 2010 was a case of voter apathy, democratic voters being less organized yet more idealistic than Republicans.

I didn’t vote in 2010 mid-terms. I’ve voted in every election I could since.

In fact, if 2008 was about the recession and not mostly about the Iraq War and Bush in general, why didn't the generic Dem advantage budge between 2007 and election day?

A less ideologically sclerotic organization would have tried to pin 2007 / 2008 on the Democratic Party in some manner, which is why I'm skeptical of retreating into heuristics.

Thankfully "all regulations are bad unless they concern nonviolent drug offenders outside the pharmaceutical industry" is more of a core Republican plank than "only wealthy people who can get pregnant should have reproductive rights."

The talking point about the Carter-era Community Reinvestment Act (and implicitly the irresponsible, swarthy poors who took advantage of it) causing the downturn was very popular all throughout 2008 on the right.

It would have if Obama had bailed out the middle class instead of the fucking bankers. But what can you expect from the rightwing sellout that had the nerve to compare himself with FDR at the beginning for the crisis while protecting criminal bankers by any means necessary and throwing mere scraps to the middle class?

Obama made the n00b mistake of thinking that Republicans objected to Liberal policies based on some deeply held principles and not because calling people commies was a convenient political scapegoat for the last 60 years.

As a result, he managed to pursue half-measures when they Dems had the supermajority, that didn’t really excite the base much. By the time he wised up the Republicans already had the house.

Also, Obama was just terrible for the Dem electoral machine. You can still see that today, where the Dems still suck at election campaigning.

Edit: imo the biggest problem politically this country has I The gerrymandering from 2010. So many congressmen sit in uncompetitive districts that Republicans could hold the house running 300 Todd Akins except for maybe this year.

Luckily this should improve as there’s almost no way republicans have as much control of state houses in 2021.

His team wound up administering the bailout so it's fair to hold him responsible for the various decisions they made once he was in office (as well as the mostly-informal policy of avoiding prosecutions for fear it would reignite the panic). Plus there was some coordination among the Bush administration and the Obama and McCain campaigns before the election.

That said, hearing "should've let the banks fail" gives me a headache.
