Clark started bringing prostitutes back to the couple's apartment to have threesomes. Then, when Clark took an interest in an 11-year-old neighbor, Bundy helped lure the girl into posing for pornographic photographs.[3] Clark quickly escalated from pedophilia, talking about how much he would like to kill a girl during sex. He persuaded Bundy to purchase two automatic pistols for him to use, reportedly seeking to fulfill his fantasy of killing a woman during sex and feeling her vaginal contractions during the death spasms

The logic used to justify Liam Neeson’s attempted hate crime (he was in a bad state of mind, he was a victim to rage) can be used to defend any hate crime. And it has. Black men have been lynched for centuries because they happened upon the wrong angry white man at the wrong time.

These excuses cannot be allowed to enter the public discourse.

But you said "that there would be more studies to analyze if only sports leagues would stop outlawing us from competing ". Wouldn't that mean that those additional studies show if there is or isn't a benefit? Why would you otherwise state that by participating you have more study material?
So medals and worthless statistics are more sacrosanct than equality and freedom? If there's anything more mixed up, it's the priorities.

I’m a white dude in Québec. Black History Month is important to me, because every year I get to read incredible threads here about historical figures and moments that weren’t taught in school.

I just want to thank the community here for teaching me so much, and I am looking for to learning more this year!

Let us flip the script: if Neeson was black would you call this personal growth?
I doubt anyone who is defending/supporting Neeson would do the same if he was black. Same thing if the focus of his racism wasn't black people.

if this had been an idris elba anecdote about how one of his friends was raped by a white guy, he went a bit crazy for a week with revenge fantasies, and ultimately nothing came of it and he is ashamed that he was ever in that state I'd be saying literally the same things about that

Is it any wonder these people don't know how to be fun and spontaneous when they obsess over "punching up" and "punching down" in comedy? Any fun and spontaneous member who could fill that role is either banned or learned quickly that ERA is not a place for fun. It is a place to be uptight, be miserable, be a Marvel shill, and be on edge for Nazis 24/7.

Now I imagine he started the book series with a much more hardline approach and that end the end he was going to have the Fellowship drop the filthy Habbit Froyo into the volcano... but then I think he realized that moderation and addressing temptation over prohibition was more effective. Hence Gollum who emaciated represents the dangers of prohibition and addiction. The ring of course represents temptation and so in the end Tolkien drops the ring and not the filthy Habbit into the volcano because it is temptation and addiction and not Froyo himself that is dangerous.

Them trying extra hard to 'prove' they can be fun--in an officially marked fun thread, which in itself is a poor attempt to be funny/cheeky--is just coming off as sort of sad. Squeezing blood out of that stone is futile. They are bitter, uptight people at heart. Bitter, uptight people forcing themselves to be funny comes off as awkward.

that when he says it was awful, that he looked at himself and said what the fuck are you doing, that he is only talking about the violence aspect, and the racist aspect is wholly separate from that...

He addresses the violence... calls the violence and revenge wrong.

He does not address the racism, never once calls it racism.

These are objective facts.  And what I said was.. that had he addressed or discussed the racism he might have gotten a different reaction.

You can claim all you want you get the "vibe" that he is regrtful for racism.. what is objectively true is that he never once admits to or apologizes for racism.  He does in fact admit to and apologize for violent vengful thoughts.

The pauses he makes are specifically transcribed.
Pauses like that are usually for comedic emphasis (seems unlikely here), for collecting thoughts (possible I suppose), or because what they are about to say are particularly difficult to admit.
He pauses on the racist part, and on the murder part. It seems likely to me those are the aspects he found most difficult to admit.

He doesn't have to explicitly say that it was racist for it to have been racist, and he doesn't have to say he is talking about cold blooded murder of an innocent bystander, for him to be talking about the cold blooded murder of an innocent bystander.

if he was secretly racist, but aware enough of his racism to feel shame, he would have just not mentioned that part. As I say, the story is no less shocking removing that element.
If he was overtly and openly unashamedly racist, it seems likely that that would have cropped up at some point during his career.

The fact that this thread is of the same users shows how forced the humor is. I think Era's stance on the weird and bizzare need to be changed because the forum seems to foster a certain attitude and that attitude isn't built for joke-y fun stuff. Every thread I go in is all business. The only ones that seem to shoot the shit are more vocal communities with their inside jokes. Main page threads lack that certain charm.

He pauses on the racist part

No, he didn't...  what account are you reading?  He did not pause on the racism part.

Quote
“But my immediate reaction was…” There’s a pause. “I asked, did she know who it was? No. What colour were they? She said it was a black person.

“I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be approached by somebody – I’m ashamed to say that – and I did it for maybe a week, hoping some [Neeson gestures air quotes with his fingers] ‘black bastard’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could,” another pause, “kill him.”

Neeson clearly knows what he’s saying, and how shocking it is, how appalling.

Quote
and on the murder part. It seems likely to me those are the aspects he found most difficult to admit.

He explictly and in detail later in the interview describes violence and revenge and killing... he didn't need to merely "pause" to emphasis that as he goes into detail about it.  He did not say a word about racism, or bring that aspect up when he was going into detail about how wrong his vengefuln feelings were.

He talks about revenge killings in northern ireland, which were predominately religion based, but he also doesn't talk about religious prejudice.

I straight up don't get how "racism" is the key takeaway from "I was walking around armed looking to kill a random person"

e: or how him talking about how awful, and ashamed he is of the entire scenario, but mentally put "but didn't explicitly mention racism, so I guess he's fine with that part"

If I was mod, I would just change the title of the Serial Killer Neeson thread to "Fun thread |OT| You're TAKEN this too seriously"

I don't choose to believe anything about Neeson, I really don't care nor do any of us have any clue if he's racist or not.

We also don't even know if Neeson thinks that story of his involves racism, because he didn't address it.... I suspect he does think it was racist,I suspect that he feels regret over that fact.

I do not know that because he didn't say as much, he only expressed regret directly for the concept of revenge and wanting to kill people.

Had he directly addressed the racism (if he actually believes it was racist), there might have been a different reaction to the story.

But I guess I'm just etiolating here.  Fuck you guys are fucking circle jerking morons.

You know what they need is a race war thread. A thread with no moderation and no hard feeling where people can say what they REALLY think about mayos and nuggets

You are magically attributing a pause between those 2 statements.. "And my reaction was..... I asked.. did she know who it was?".. as somehow Liam Neesan admitting to and apologizing for racism.

Amazing.

I mean, you're free to interpret what he said however you want, but to my eyes he was telling a personal anecdote - warts and all - to show how he can understand how other people can get caught up in a cycle of hatred - for example the religious intolerance that the Troubles consisted of, or contemporary hate crimes - and that he moved past it and is ashamed that he was ever in that position.

Just seems... weird to me to need footnotes in that anecdote to explain the racist part is racist, and a special condemnation specifically for the racist part to distance himself from it, when literally the entire anecdote is about the shame he feels for that period of his life.
