Kingsman: Surprisingly great! Started to drag a bit in the middle but the book-ending acts were super fun! Great love letter to the more ridiculous Moore era Bonds. Definitely looking forward to a sequel.

Same here; I liked just about everything about it, including the in-your-face class politics. The bad guy's plan reminded me of the elitist guys in Hitchhikers' Guide who escaped their planet, leaving the lower and middle classes behind. I liked Sam Jackson not just playing someone famous for saying "motherfuckin'" all the time. Actually, his rich/nerd assumptions about how things should work struck me as pretty spot-on.

I'll check Kingsman someday because everything I heard has been positive. It's just been tarnished a bit by my annoying af coworker who is def. on the spectrum. He seemingly sees every movie, and loves Kingsman and Chappie.

Saw Inside Out (インサイド・ヘッド) with a pretty packed theater by Japanese standards. I was honestly not thrilled by the first third, but by the end I was really into it. My wife and I were both discussing how insightful it is, but my 10-year-old also loved it. Pixar pulls magic out of the hat again. (please, please, please don't make any more Cars movies)

Em and I took Addie to see Inside Out last weekend. It was her first movie in a theater and she sat the entire time in her own seat enthralled. I'm sure tons went over her head, but she's been talking about Joy and Sadness nonstop. We loved it as well.

Saw Ant-Man 2 Ant-Man with the wife.  We both really enjoyed it.  Although the movie certainly did have connections to the MCU, I liked how it felt more self-contained and the supporting cast were all great.  The weakest character was the villain, by far.  He was just too one-dimensional compared to everyone else.

We also saw Ted 2.  It was even more like a two hour live-action Family Guy episode than the original film was.  Guess that's good or bad depending on your tastes.

Yeah I really liked the original Ted but 10 minutes into Ted 2 I wanted it to stop.

I hope they'll stop trying to shove down Bond's throat this terrible overarching plot that ruined Skyfall (Parents issues, surrogate mommy issues, surrogate step brother incest issues...  :picard It's James Bond, not Batman you dorks) and not push too hard on the angle of Blofeld (Or whatever he is named) being responsible for "everything". Otherwise looks OK, like to see of the staples of the series like the carnival scene, gadget car or the helicopter stunts (also there's some snow there : Willy Bogner like shenanigans ?) and Mendes should once again have a decent cinematographer with him.

Casino Royale was fucking awesome in the theatre.  Saw it at a midnight premier, which is usually UGHHH but it was full of pretty normal folks.  After the intro scene that lead to the gun barrel credit sequence, I was hnggggg'ing the entire time.

Even by the 80's the concept seemed dated. As much as people moan about it, the really seem to like old stories and sequels.

'Pixels' is currently 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.   To be fair, it's only 11 critics so far.  Surely it can't be that b--

Bond films weren't vanilla action movies, but they may have turned into that since the rest of the industry caught up. Still to this day, the underwater finale of Thunderball is astonishing. The thing is Bond films lost a lot of their luster when set designer Ken Adam stopped working on them. Even his last, Moonraker (an entry of the series I have warmed up to a lot, actually great fun), has some awesome sets (Drax secret space base with his weird perspectives) and top notch SFX. I like the franchise but honestly if you do not have the bug for it there's like 7 or 8 entries tops really worth it nowadays and none beyond Moonraker in 1979.

Bond movies are all enjoyable popcorn action movies.  Some being more cheezy than others.

Skyfall is the first one to have craaaazy good cinematography though, at least from the dozen or so I've seen.

Casino Royale's opening sequence is by MK12, a fantastic design shop. They also did this, which I think ended up netting them the work:

Russell Crowe can be good (like in Master & Commander, great flick), but he (or his agent) has not the best of taste for choosing projects. Never cared for Bale.

The Terence Young ones had great cinematography, so yeah no. Skyfall is way over anything since at least the middle Moore era though. Unfortunately Mendes direction is not the best though (way too many copter travelling shots).

I wonder if once Craig's run is done they'd reboot it as a period piece. That could be interesting, especially with all the archives available now to cull for little absurd touches.

Like X-Men did, just as a recent example. Mad Men and stuff has been popular too.

I do think James Bond is one where you could pull it off though because of its history.

It's not like they couldn't keep the more modern and "gritty" feel and the action scene design while setting it during the Cold War.

Bond is hit and miss, in the last 25 years I enjoyed:
-Goldeneye
-Casino Royal
-Skyfall (my fav Bond)

I like the more gritty Craig Bonds, he still has the humour but it's just not AS corny as it used to be.

Yeah, they were both 2006.

For some reason I feel the mainstreaming of "gritty grimdark realism" thing came in part from Bourne. The first two of those were 2002 and 2004. Third in 2007.

I think for Casino Royale and Something of Boris they hired stunt people from Bourne. And Bourne's action scenes were ripped off by a lot of people. So it always felt like it was the mainstream entry of that kind of film. And the return to practical stunts vs. CGI, making the action seem more realistic.

9/11 and Iraq did seem to encourage some grimdark. I remember some real disappointment from people I know because of Jarhead's bait and switch from the trailers. (I liked it better for what it actually was.)

*cut to Huma Abedin being stirred from her post-coital slumber by unusually insistent cell phone noises*

*she lifts her head off of her lovers bird chest and reads the messages - and though she had prepared, no, dedicated herself for this moment for years - what should she do? It's too late to go back, and yet, and yet...*

*suddenly a masculine hand grabs the phone from her hand and decides her fate for her*
