Does a film deal with futility and fatalism this way? This humorously, this sexily? Hmmmm

So many great lines. This movie deserves to be so much more well known. I know the 80s were a shit decade for art, but this really stands out as a high school comedy. Far better than any of the Hughes stuff.

So I was absent for like 8 months, so I probably missed all the regular film crew raving about Mandy a few months back, right? I mean, how can you not. This high fantasy film in contemporary drag was one of my favorite theater experiances of the year. As a drugged out, sensory trip its top-rate, as a very weirded out twist on way old revenge film tropes it still delivers the goods. But its not just a midnight movie exercise in deliberate strangeness (altbough its an excellent example of that), it also goes about its goals of establishing its characters and their relationships with complete and disarming sincerity. This makes it without a doubt the saddest film I've ever seen that also features a chainsaw duel. With a thundering score by the late Johan Johansson (really gonna miss that guy) and a fiercely committed Nicolas Cage performance (from anybody else this would have been better lauded, from him this sort of frothing yet measured excessiveness is expected), and probably every fog machine available to rent in all of Northern Europe, its a film that feels very fresh while retaining so many familiar elements.

Anyways, I liked it very much. But I'm real sure that similar sentiments have already been expressed here just previously.

I'm on a tour of bad 80's/90's movies.

Finished Highlander II: The Quickening, now I am watching Krull, and next on the list is Robot Jox.

I am taking suggestions.

The "Renegade Cut" of Highlander II is the only version anyone should ever watch. It starts by excising any mention of Planet Zeist.

I think I saw the blu ray cut, which has some references to Zeist, but not a whole lot. And he doesn't fly back to his home planet at the end with the girl. I do kind of want to see the theatrical cut just to see how much more of a clusterfuck it is.

My favorite part is when Sean Connery's character just learns about the Shield and is very perplexed by the entire thing, and in the next scene he is like "Connor, the only way you can destroy the Shield is.."

Huh, Total Recall is playing across the street from me at 10:30pm. Might see it. (…)
I just re-watched this with my BIL, another true-blue Verhoeven fan. It's pretty fantastic. Holds up very well. Considering all the fuckery about "what is authentic?" it's possibly the 2nd best PKD film out there.

(…) It's a far better movie than Blade Runner.

Felon (2008)

(Image removed from quote.)

I guess this is really a rumination on the prison system in general and what it does to everyone involved from all sides, innocent and guilty, inside and outside, staff and inmates. The guy behind this went on to make Snitch, low key The Rock's best movie, so this is actually pretty solid.  It's almost entirely shot in handheld to give it that early X-Files/NYPD Blue/1993 gritty feel. There's only one issue and that's that Stephen Dorff is inherently quite unlikable, so even as a man who ends up in prison for bullshit reasons (he chased a guy who had broken into his house outside and during the chase hit him with a bat, which killed the guy, so he was charged as it was no longer self defense) and gets caught up and broken by the system, it's hard to not see him as a shit head from the start.

TVC might be happy to know there's a scene where fat Val Kilmer with facial hair that makes him look like Jeff Bridges has a conversation while taking a shit and casually wiping his ass while looking someone in the eye.

I thought you were going to describe another prison scenario with fat Val Kilmer :(

Blue Sunshine is a tad disappointing, especially following the out-of-nowhere (for me) Squirm. No acid freakout sequences in an acid movie? Huge fail. In all honesty, this feels more like an underwritten, bad 70s Crichton thriller than it does a crazy 70s drug movie. Not quite sure why it built up a culty rep, aside from the weird baldie visual.

My RT guesses:

Alita - 49%
Aquaman - 68%

Also kinda surprised to see Fantastic Beasts reviews were middling. Feel like the first film would have been harder to pull off. Oh well. It’ll probably still make bank.

Hey I was only 4% off with Aquaman. Not bad.

Re-watched (what am I doing with my life) that one not too long ago. Yeah, its pretty damn miserably bad. Millenium Films goes after big names on their slide down in their careers because they can sell their shit films internationally with a name attached despite the shittiness of the product.

Same company contracted Pacino for 88 Minutes (abysmal, but at least somewhat energetic) and De Niro for Killing Season (the film in which John Travolta gives a significantly more comitted performance than Robert De Niro).

Millenium films also made the recent, pointedly square and aggresively mediocore Hunter Killer, a submarine thriller that's exactly as generic as its title. Gerald Butler is a sub captain who never has to punch anyone, Gary Oldman shouts at people in conference rooms, and the films command of current geopolitics is adorably antiquated (at least they got to sell distribution rights to Russia). Its the filmic equivalent of a weaker Call of Duty storyline, but without enough explosions to maintain interest throughout. Of course its far from the worst Gerald Butler film, but aint that damning with faint praise.

how much time ya got...

so back in the pre-streaming days, Netflix actually had an embarrassment of riches when it came to Region Free Hong Kong DVD imports. I was able to see so many wonderful films thusley. Sometimes they had crappy transfers or hilariously bad subtitles, but gol-dern it, when you're watching supernaturally handsome Takeshi Kaneshiro attempt to look downtrodden, it was easily worth it.

Hows about I recommend a really awesome obscurity instead. Bury Me High stars nobody who ever got internationally famous (Yuen Wah, the landlord from Kung Fu Hustle comes closest) and has a plot based on validating superstition. But being barking mad has never held back many a great action film from awesomeness. When its not being a lower rent Indiana Jones or Rambo 2 knock off, its supplying lots of great fight scenes and stuntwork that's crazy even by the standards of its era. Very few minutes of this film pass by wherein something strange or kickass is not happening, works for me.

The Favorite is as good as everyone says it is. I’m usually not into historical movies when they’re played straight, so the comedic aspect of it was great. Very good chance it wins a couple acting Oscars. Roma is still my personal favorite of 2018 though.

Yeah, I'll co-sign, The Favorite is high on Best Of list for the year. Hell, its not even a straight comedy and its still one of the funniest things I've seen this year by far. It may not be a quote-unquote 'comedy', it is however, richly entertaining, clever as hell, and the rare work of any media that can be accurately described as 'witty'. And like this year's earlier (and also superlative) The Death of Stalin, perhaps more than a little accurate as to how power shifts and is exercised in authoritarian regimes (IE, its dumb).

so The Favorite is plenty damn great, so of course I had to follow that with as much an opposite pick I could find. I didn't have warm memories exactly of Jason X, but I remembered liking it well enough back in its (DVD era) day. Seeing it again just a bit shocking, its friggin terrible. Everything looks just so shoddy, the cheapness of it all shines through. Maybe that's me seeing it in HD for the first time ever, or maybe that's just my rising standards over time. And yeah, its low hanging fruit to pick on a slasher movie for crappy production values and flat direction, but this film doesn't even have what should be a reliable strength of this sort of thing in having good kills. Its a drab, tedious Aliens ripoff, and for the first time in my life I didn't appreciate that at all. At least some of the practical effects have aged nicely.

Friday the 13th's 5-7 are my series best picks, if anybody was wondering.

I watched an 80s Brit children’s dark fantasy from the 80s called Paperhouse last night. I had never heard of it, but it was fabntastic, aside from a slightly fumbled (but understandably) ending. I can see why it was never released on video in the US. It’s very British. It’s directed by the dude that went on to do Candyman, also a beloved kids movie.

If you like dark kids shit from the 80s, check it out.
