From that group, I've read Invincible, Stray Bullets, Outcast, Oblivion Song, Kill or Be Killed, Criminal, Monstress and all are pretty decent or better except Monstress which is freakin awesome.

Savage Dragon #250 came out yesterday.  Haven't talked about Erik Larsen's fetish superhero book in a while.

MAJOR plotpoints:

Dragon's step (half?) brother married his wife's mother and they made a sex tape.

Nipples are Erik's new fetish.  Nearly every female character has them poking through.  Here we see Malcolm talking to his step-sister, who previously was involved in a multi-issue fuckfest with him and his wife.  One of the Dragon kids is actually hers.

Malcolm's wife is back to looking to fuck all the time.  Erik also has started drawing her with erect nipples and visible 'gina.

Another recent addition/return to the cast are these characters.  The two spider-girls shoot webs from their naughty bits.

After Malcolm and his kids beat the shit out of (and kill several) baddies who invade their home, it's more FUCK TIME.

BUT WAIT

O.G. Dragon is back

WILL HE ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING OR JUST JOIN IN WITH THE FUCKING?  FIND OUT IN ANY NUMBER OF MONTHS!

A lot of stuff I've never heard of, of stuff listed the only things I've read are I Am Legion which I didn't like much, and Metabarons, which is weird as fuck but I did enjoy.

Monday's WarnerMedia layoffs have affected a significant number of high-level figures at comic book powerhouse DC, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Among those said to be losing their positions are editor-in-chief Bob Harris, senior VP of publishing strategy and support services Hank Kanalz, VP of marketing and creative services Jonah Weiland, VP global publishing initiatives and digital strategy Bobbie Chase, senior story editor Brian Cunningham, and executive editor Mark Doyle, who oversaw the rollout of the Black Label graphic novels.

Roughly one third of DC's editorial ranks are being laid off, according to sources.

Insiders also say the majority of the staff of the streaming service DC Universe has been laid off, a move that had been widely expected as WarnerMedia shifts its focus to new streaming service HBO Max.

Isn't it Harras, the former Marvel guy?

Also worked with one of the folks who took it in the neck. Will refrain from commenting further and certainly won't bother with Schadenfreude.

DCs digital strategy is some baffling shit that has all the appearances of being designed by a committee who are embarrassed at being associated with funny books, so the biggest shock in getting rid of the person overseeing that is that its taken this long.

Particularly given they have "global" as part of their job description and came up with a US only product.

Oh hey, another Humble Comics Bundle.

I only recognise the old 2000AD stuff, but there's some solid-ass classics in there.

Zenith Phase III is basically the ur-story Grant Morrison has been regularly rewriting for DC since he was hired, of alternate universe take super heroes versus multidimensional cosmic lovecraftian horror

Savage Dragon 251:

O.G. DRAGON IS BACK?  NO!  YES!  SORT OF!  He's the original Dragon, Paul Dragon, Erik's first version of the character, who appeared in in the 80s in comics nobody read.

The two Dragons go out and talk, but then Paul starts beating up Malcolm, then himself, because a mind-controlling villain popped up.  Malcolm kills him pretty quickly and the issue ends.

But that's not all- we got some FUCKING to do!  Paul hooks up with Alex and while what I said last month didn't happen-

BUT WAIT

DC Universe dosen't have Vertigo titles does it? I was interested in re-reading Y The Last Man, but on the ipad. Thought about using DC Universe because I've liked Marvel Unlimited. Probably will still subscribe to it, but wish it had more then the cape stuff.

No, there are no "imprints" on there (like the current Black Label or the now dead Vertigo or stuff like Milestone/Wildstorm), just the basic core DC Universe series.

I guess having an actual focus for it as a comics distribution platform rather than some kind of wooly multimedia... thing makes it more likely they'll add their imprint lines eventually?

I feel like today was the day I decided to go digital with comics.

Other than simply wanting to save money, I've also become annoyed with missing issues.

Since covid, I haven't really visited comic book stores and somewhat fell off. I had pretty much dropped a lot of titles except X-men stuff. Which honestly I have not really enjoyed. Like I just do not like the current line. I really wanted Hickman to take over X-men, because I enjoyed his Avengers run and his creator owned stuff like East of West. I also enjoy superhero comics when they are weird and serious. But his X-men stuff just seems so out there and feels so meandering. I love Morrison's New X-men, that is my X-men. I don't know what this X-men is. Maybe I'm getting old. I really enjoyed House and Powers of X though. That was great. Since then it's just felt like it's going nowhere and there's just so many books.

I've also been re-reading New X-men through Marvel Universe and it's just been so awesome. I can read with the lights off and everything is so accessible. Much better than taking out my single issues or the Omnibus.

But I still want to keep up with X-men, so though I haven't gone out every week I went out recently to find the last issue of X-men(12) and I guess none of the local stores have it. I guess a new character was introduced. I don't know. I don't care.  At this point I'll just wait to these hit Unlimited.

Also what do people think about the Hickman X-men? I thought House of X and Powers were awesome.

Since then....Well I've just found it so boring and lifeless.

Also has anyone here been keeping up with the X line? How have the other titles like Hellions, Cable, Wolverine, and so on been? I kind of just want to trim my pulls to very few titles if I would continue.

Am pretty behind on everything, but I agree that X stuff kind of fell off after House/Powers.  I liked Marauders a whole lot, but then they killed off Kitty (am sure she'll be back soon if they didn't already bring her back) and it killed the book for me.  Read the first few issues of Hellions and it seems interesting enough, but they just announced that the whole team is due to be killed off in an upcoming issue- I don't expect them to stay dead or even be killed at all, but this might mean another roster comes on board and I'm not sure if I like that.  Guess we'll see.  The most recent issue also had some possibly major happen, detailed here (spoilers!)

But it's also possible that this is going to ignored completely.  :doge

They're also starting up the first big X-crossover event with "X Of Swords" so maybe things will get interesting again.

Started getting back to superhero comics after largely not reading anything for months.  Decided to check out Venom because of all the Knull stuff.  The new series is much more enjoyable and better written than the previous one from 2018.

Knull is going to be the new big-bad of the Marvel universe so Venom might get more important.
His introduction in the Venom series was good.  Then Absolute Carnage happened and that was not good.  Kind of boring.

They also retconned the symbiote origins (again) and made it so they've been around for a long time.  Beowulf was a symbiote dragon.  Symbiote suits were used in the Vietnam war and went haywire.  So of course Nick Fury called in the one man who could stop them...Logan.  Gotta have Wolverine pop up in everything!

Am behind on everything else.  Might check out X-Men next.  I really enjoyed Powers and House of X, but the relaunch of everything kind of fell flat with me.  Read that the X-Men as a team are finally coming back- they were actually kind of dissolved with the whole Krakoa mutant nation thing, but a team of characters disobeyed orders and are now the outlaw "X-Men" again.

I havent read any venom since the flash thompson agent venom stuff which was pretty good and a novel take, but it sounds like this just takes a huge shit over that idea retroactively if its just some ongoing military project thats been kicking around forever (for the same reason making weapon x weapon 10 fucked up wolverine as a one off failed experiment)

Aw, I'm just pointing out the goofy shit that happens.   :lol  It's all good, clean fun. :awesome

Nothing to really post from the latest issue.  It opened with more nekkid, but was actually pretty serious and focused on the story this time.  Erik seems to be shifting the focus towards more dragons popping up now.

Savage Dragon #255:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Malcolm got shot all up last issue and is in a hospital bed this issue.  Barely in the book and his wife is told that if he heals back up, his brain may not and he may not remember his family.  This is kind of like what happened with the original Dragon's origin.  Reset coming?  Major bad guy Dart is also shot in the head and seemingly killed.  She had been taking care of another dragon baby who nobody else knew was born (back in one of the Dragon threesome or foursomes, he knocked up a character who got killed off when the baby burst from her stomach on a train).

Instead, the focus is on the O.G...O.G. Dragon who was recently re-introduced.  He wants to find out what happened to his dead wife, who was killed in Dimension-X.  So after fucking Alex ( :doge), they set off to go find her grave, which is empty.  The book ends with another baby dragon watching them.

Wandavision got me back to my Marvel reading where it's been taking me 3-4 years to get through post Civil War pre-Secret Invasion era marvel runs. Almost at Secret Invasion. Maybe I'll get past that this year.

Right now I'm in the middle of reading the comic event Annihilation Conquest which is like the first formation of Guardians of the Galaxy and yeaaaah, it's pretty rough. I heard Guardians comics were pretty much trash until the films came along. I wonder if post-films the comics are actually good and just copy the tone of the movies from that point forward.

But part of it is Nova and the Nova run is pretty solid so far. My favorite part of the start of the Nova run is when he comes back to earth after Civil War and his old New Warriors pal Speedball now BDSM Penance says hi and Nova is like "man, wtf Earth, I'm out" and then leaves the planet.

I read a Namor run right before this that was good about Atlantis being destroyed. Would make a good basis for a Namor 2nd movie if they ever get him started in the MCU.

Also I wasn't expecting much from Thor (2007), but the run that brings the post-Ragnorak (since Ragnorak happened in Avengers Disassembled and Thor's been out of the picture 2004-2007) return of Thor is pretty good so far. A lot of the movie quotes and more badass moments feel lifted from some of this. Like Thor vs Iron Man where he's like you want to see the difference between a GOD and a man in a metal suit.

Annihilation Conquest is the sequel to Annihilation, which is where they redeemed a lot of these - let's be honest - joke characters by pulling a dirty dozen on them.
I mean, Rocket Raccoon? Seriously? Does his friend Maxwell have a silver hammer?

DnA's GOTG was a pretty good run, which established the films team comp, but was very different in tone. By the time they get around to Bendis basically writing the MCU fanfic version as Space Avengers, its just not that good a book.

Secret Invasion is kind of lame, but it leads to Dark Avengers, which is way better than it has any right to be

as a result of civil war and the government needing people to take down unregistered supes, Norman Osborne (the Green Goblin) takes over the Thunderbolts (which is like the Marvel Suicide Squad) in an amazing Ellis run and are straight up super villains loving the chance to beat the shit out of superheroes on the government payroll.

As a result of Secret Invasion, where all Starktech gets Skrull infiltrated, only Osborne tech is still working, and he kills the Queen Skrull live on TV.

So they give Norman Osborne control of S.H.I.E.L.D, which he renames H.A.M.M.E.R, and then he makes his own Avengers, with hookers and blackjack, who are all straight up super villains just dressed up as 'real' Avengers - Venom is Spidey, Bullseye is Hawkeye, Moonstone is Ms Marvel, Osborne wears his own knock off Iron Man armour with a stars and stripes paintjob and calls himself IRON PATRIOT  :usacry :usacry :usacry etc

And mostly gets away with it, cashing goverment paychecks, covering up all the super villain shit the team get up to so the public don't realise its different people in the costumes etc.

it is WAY FUCKING BETTER than it ever deserved to be :rofl

Secret Invasion is kind of lame, but it leads to Dark Avengers, which is way better than it has any right to be

The best parts of Secret Invasion are the related side stories taking place in other books, I.E. some of the Avengers titles were used to tell the backstories of what was going on with some of the Skrulls who replaced the various superheroes.  It was interesting to get that point of view.  And there was some crazy stuff like the "return" of the original Captain Marvel...sort of.

Dark Avengers is kind of similar in that there's some fun side stories going on.  When the Dark Avengers thing started, a "Dark Reign" branding was started and added to the top of various comics to show that they were related to this new Dark Avengers status quo.  This brought with it books based on the fake Avengers, like Dark Spider-Man (Venom- not Eddie Brock Venom, but Mac Gargan, The Scorpion, Venom), Moonstone taking over Ms. Marvel's series and actually trying to be a superhero, Dark Wolverine (Daken), etc.

This storyline ended with another big event, Siege, which I still have yet to read.  There was also second version of the Dark Avengers later on with a lesser-known group of villains taking the roles.  IIRC they became one of the Thunderbolts line-ups.

'events' are usually an excuse to mix up the status quo in other titles, so yeah, you'll find some hits (and some total misses) going on elsewhere.

Civil war had the Ellis Thunderbolts run, which is goddamn great.

Dark Reign had the Punisher get decapitated and come back as a frankensteins monster  ::)

Finished Annihilation Comquest - It started off iffy because the phalanx virus thing was kinda lame, but it did enough world building with these different characters Nova, Gamora, Starlord, Drax, Guardians, Ronan, Phyl-Val, Adam, that by the end it was pretty badass cool comic stuff and had a solid final boss bit with Ultron. So in the end it was a good read.

I started Guardians of the Galaxy which comes right out of it and read issue 1 and thought it was...pretty good? It's not A+ comedy writing like some writers but it's like a solid B funny. It actually feels pretty close to the tone of the films to me (like first issue using The Office style cut interview cuts). Though Mantis in the comics is way better than in the films. Also makes me wish the movies used Quasar & Adam Warlock.

They teased Adam Warlock in a post-credits scene at the end of the second GoTG movie, but nothing since.

There's so much weird 70s LSD induced pseudo-religious space gods fuckery around adam warlock I'm not that surprised nobody really knows how to approach it.

...but then one of the upcoming actual being released movies is Eternals, sooooo.... :idont

I know it's Marvel and they've had crazy success with all their movies, but I really wonder how well Eternals will do.  Just doesn't really scream "hot property" to me.

I could probably name 100 marvel runs I think would make a better film before even remembering the Eternals even exist, so yeah.

I mean, I guess Ancient Aliens stuff still has some kind of appeal? Deviants as a backdoor intro to mutants? Setting up characters like Hercules as a Gilgamesh alt-account without having to bring in actual gods to the MCU? Neil Gaiman is ghost writing?

I have to assume theres some reason behind the scenes they chose them :idont

Yeah, Eternals is the Marvel movie I'm the least interested in. In my 1998-2008 read of Marvel Comics outside a few Eternals characters here and there I can't think of a single Eternals focused storyline I've ever read and the characters generally are just ok.

But I'm also assuming that Marvel knows what they are doing and someone wrote them a real good script and they were like "wow, with this we can make Eternals work!" and started the project. There has to be something there.

I literally just looked up the imdb to see which Eternals characters are even in this, and...I've never heard of any of these characters. So this is gonna be a weird blank slate movie. The cast is pretty cool though. Lotta interesting actors/actresses.

My comic book knowledge comes and goes as I read trades, so I don't really remember Adam Warlock's older stuff including his role in Infinity War other than he's just super powerful. I think you can avoid all the religious Jesus stuff and just make him a super powered "perfectly engineered human who evolves in a cocoon" thing and be done with it.

In this DnA Guardians run, Warlock works pretty great with the team dynamic because him being this ultra-powered super serious no-humor person creates a great character for Quill to constantly play off of with quipps and just a "oh shit we're in over our head, do whatever the supergod guy says". So I think something like that would work really well in the film team. Would be nice if he joins early in 3.

That being said the film team so far is this rag-tag underpowered group and having a overpowered character like Warlock join would definitely make the scenes tougher to write since Warlock is one of those can beat any situation plot writing issues.

the safe take for Eternals is basically just doing WildC.A.T.S, and have the kherubim Eternals crash land on Earth thousands of years ago and already be super powered, and be fighting daemonites deviants throughout the course of human history and being written into various mythologies before some shit happened that mind wiped them before endgame restored their memories somehow.

You get to have your big historical event scenes a la Wonder Womans no mans land fight, and then you get your modern scene with someone getting like, paintings of Samson, Gilgamesh, Hercules, St George killing the dragon etc and then contemporary sidekick going all "WOW THESE ARE ALL THE SAME PERSON... AND ITS YOU!".

But they're still kind of their own little bubble, and its not like the MCU does as much time travel shenanigans as DC does, so I'm not sure what it brings to the table in terms of fleshing stuff out, because I really don't think Disney are going to be pushing the 'human race were created and genetically engineered by aliens all along' angle.
I guess you can show Rama Tut in ancient egypt times before recycling him into Kang for ant man 3?
