Since I had issue with mibbit last time, I'm going to post instructions on using ChatZilla.
1. Download ChatZilla - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chatzilla/
-- I don't know of a similar add-on for Chrome or IE, sorry.
2. (Assuming you are running the latest FireFox) -- start ChatZilla by clicking the top left tab (where it has your options, etc...) and click ChatZilla
-- A window appears!
3. Change your nickname in the bottom left corner, if necessary (we can do this later if you forget)
4. Click IRC on the top toolbar, then Join Channel
5. Enter "irc.gamecubecafe.com" for the server, and "#evilbore" for the channel
-- You should be all set, at this point
-- Did you forget to change your name, or want to change your name anyway? Type "/nick username"
http://cbe002.chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23evilbore&server=irc.gamecubecafe.com
and if it doesn't work there is always chatzilla as demi said
I dunno what's that. I will be watching it with a couple of IRL friends so I will be offline for an hour or so.
Yeah mibbit channel for sure, magus. The PS4 one was fun as hell, even if the conference sucked.
Tomorrow, 6pm BST/10am PDT, Xbox is revealing something special.
We think you might like what they're announcing...

MicroSoft and EA just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about American culture (I'm an expert), but Dudebro Shooter and Madden are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Europe where you can become successful by presenting artistic stuff. If you screw Madden Fans over in the US, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the american public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase the NextBox as their system, nor will they purchase any of EAs games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but MicroSoft has alienated an entire market with this move.
EA and MicroSoft, publicly apologize for showing off FIFA instead of Madden for NextBox or you can kiss your business goodbye.

When the chat shit out last time, there was a 2nd chat started that had mostly non-fucktard posters. We should do that again, I don't like sharing even virtual space with powerslave, etc. I have class until 1 but should be online watching about 15 minutes after it starts.

I'd love to do football. I'd love to do a football game. I don't think they've changed one iota. I think there was some interesting stuff at the start of football games... you had things like Sensible Soccer, and you had... what was the name, Kick-Off? You had lots of different mechanisms, and it's kind of all just come into we know exactly what the controls are going to do, and I'd love to say "Right. Let's get back to what football's all about." And what is it REALLY all about? What do you want, as a player, to be when you play football, and what do you want to feel when you play? I'd love to do that, it would be a real joy. That's not saying I'm going to do a football game, I'm just saying a personal thing is that, you know, the challenge of doing that would be fantastic.
i hope phil turns heel during the presentation and gives don mattrick a stunner
then he cracks open a couple of zimas, pours one on the new xbox, and the camera fades to black with him double fisting the middle finger and wagging his head back and forth
jr would fuckin lose his shit

I'm hoping they don't go too full-on with Windows 8 integration... announcing WinRT compatibility would be great for app developers, but I don't want much if any time at all devoted to silly swipey menus and voice commands

How many will buy those TVs when their Xbox will make their current TVs do the same thing, if not better?

Wired asked Microsoft if installation would be mandatory. “On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play,” the company responded in an emailed statement. Sounds mandatory to us.
What follows naturally from this is that each disc would have to be tied to a unique Xbox Live account, else you could take a single disc and pass it between everyone you know and copy the game over and over. Since this is clearly not going to happen, each disc must then only install for a single owner.
Microsoft did say that if a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc.
"Xbox, play game"Xbox, turn on WiiU"
...Xbox?"
Wait....you have to pay extra money of another account wants to play the game?
Sony's show was horrible, but now compared to this, it's amazing and for gamers.
Who do you think will get more coverage overall?
Isn't this exactly what you guys expected? I already knew it wasn't for me.Expected, but I'll be here mocking it none the less, i have nothing better to do

Then MS.
Yeah, that's exactly what I mean.
As a company you do whatever get's you the most press. This event covers like 10 different spectrum's of entertainment. From a business perspective, this event was smart money for Microsoft.

Yet they focus on TV, which is something that demographic accesses less and less.

The IGN stream just said you have to pay to transfer your gamerscore to the Xbox One.No fucking way. I don't believe that shit because it's connected across all MS stuff already if you use your Live ID. PC, phone, tablet and xbox. Unless they make you start a new account that makes no sense.

sauce?
To play a game you just bought for the Xbox One you need an active internet connection to install and play the game. You cannot start a game without an active internet connection. Much like Steam when you put the disc in the drive it reaches out to the internet and ties the game to your account then installs it. Games cannot be played without an install.
Lemme say that again.
You cannot play games on this without an active internet connection.
Single player games will continue to work if you happen to lose your internet connection.

As shown in the Microsoft reveal stream, and confirmed in the release, “Live TV will require a supported receiver device with HDMI output,” which is sold separately.
Xbox One’s live TV fucntionality will only be available in the US at launch, a press release from Microsoft has confirmed.

also wondering about the "second account" wording in that used game quote
do they mean there's a two-console game disc activation limit, period?
It's over, period. MS lost used games, and that's the end of their Xbox hopes and dreams.
It's not hyperbole, it's not fanboy drivel. It is LITERALLY it for Xbox. Xbox has nothing left, nothing they can reveal now would fix the hole created. There is no reason left for any one, hardcore or casual, to substantively invest in a Xbox One. Except if they want to play Halo 5. Which will also come to PC at some point.
The age of Xbox is done.
The thing that pisses me off the most about this and previous Xbox conferences is they're like SPORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS! but the one thing people wanna be able to do is stream live sporting events and that's the one thing THEY'RE NEVER GOING TO LET YOU DO because of networks and bullshit. At best, you can pay a pantload of money for an app and watch live (non-playoff) games and still get blacked out of local games. But wow, you can get fantasy league updates in real-time, omg! Because there's no way I could have done that before the Xbox 1 was invented.
So what games did they announce? Anything interesting?

yeah, nobody knows for sure at this point. i mean, 8gb of ram alone is a pretty good bump.
those were just idiots who drew a conclusion from watching trailers on a stream.
Damn, the nOne is getting worse and worseNo this system will still actually get games.
The Wii U is a fucking SNES 2 compared to it.
X1 will not work without the Kinect being plugged inThe next question is, will it work if you have the Kinect plugged in but facing a wall so it can't see anything?
yep. the thing makes no sense.just hold on to yer butts for a few years and it will have fallen in price and there might be something fun to pick up at dirt prices.
All this will be moot if it somehow has incredible games, but I'm not holding my breath. Seems like they're relying on COD and EA Sports exclusive shit or whatever.
It seems I took what I considered basic fearures for granted with my Wii U. No bc and essentially no lending games AND having to pay for a gold subscription on top of all this bs is a joke and a farce.
What a piece of shit :lolWhat if they all move to Nintendo and usher in an age of enlightenment/2012 era tech console to replace the WiiU.
I hope Prole, Patel, and Co. all get to keep their jobs when this thing craters :(
It seems I took what I considered basic fearures for granted with my Wii U. No bc and essentially no lending games AND having to pay for a gold subscription on top of all this bs is a joke and a farce. I conjecture that although sony hasn't been brazen about it, they have a similar setup just based on how they have been beating around the bush (we already know nothing carries over to ps4 as far as bc is concerned).
The thing is though, Microsoft can still carve out a niche like they have always done via brute force and the backing of the bigger publishers. I can't see Sony flourishing in the business going by their current prospects. Anyone advocating pc are in for a surprise if the One missteps, though, as without being subsidized by console sales, AAA won't be able to sustain itself anywhere.
Yes I'm concern trolling, but so is everyone else today so I get a turn too.

dude I left the gaming industry 2 months ago, I could read the writing on the wall
Specifically, the press release states, in the small print that…
At launch, Live TV will require a supported receiver device with HDMI output (sold separately).
And, before that:
Live TV with Kinect navigation, Live TV with OneGuide, Trending, and NFL on Xbox available in U.S. at launch; anticipating global scale over time.
Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?
Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.

Harrison: Correct.

So the system is built to work even if your Internet connection goes down, but you still have to be connected at least once a day to use it, Harrison said. We're not sure exactly what would happen if you don't connect once per day—and that timeframe could change—but this doesn't sound good for anyone who was hoping to use Xbox One without an Internet connection.
I, for one, cannot be happier about how terrible this is looking. I absolutely despise the Xbox Live paywall, paid DLC (that was introduced with Halo 2), and many other antics associated with MS anti-consumer behavior in general.
The fact that even Xbox 360 owners are thinking on skipping on the Xbox One makes me hope for MS eventually going out of the gaming business and focusing on other entertainment.
Is all of this worse then 599? Imho yes.

Xbox One will have a smaller section than the PC games currently do.
Videogames have changed.
It's not about high scores, or fun gameplay.
It's not even about graphics, multiplayer, or innovation.
It's an endless series of micro transactions,
made by children and manchildren.
Videogames, and its vast consumption of human time,
has become a rational, well-oiled business transaction.
Videogames have changed.
ID-tagged gamers carry ID-tagged consoles,
that use ID-tagged games.
Season-passes inside their games
enhance and regulate their experience.
Lending games control.. Used games control..
Single player control.. ESPN control.
Everything is monitored, and kept under control.
Videogames have changed.
The age of entertainment is now the age of control,
averting the piracy of smart people.
And he who controls the activation codes, controls games.
Videogames have changed.
3 of my 6 Xbot fans are no longer buying this thing. The rest are leaning towards the PS4 too, but will wait for E3 to make their decision.

You're fucked from both ends next-gen, kids
It depends on how bitter the pill is. It could be a coffee pill. But Ms gave us a semen pill today.
So the pluses are:
1. More servers
2. It's full of holes
So is this officially the worst console reveal? Were there any worse ones? I'd like to hear about them. This thing makes 599 looks like child's play.
599 wasn't even a console reveal. the reveal was before that, where a price was not announced.
hey, ms didn't announce a price here, either.

If it's 599...
Given the fact it isnt much of a graphical beast I'm guessing it isn't. My guess is 350-400.
What a piece of shit :lol
I hope Prole, Patel, and Co. all get to keep their jobs when this thing craters :(
Dude, I left the gaming industry 2 months ago. The writing on the wall's been clear for years. Momma didn't raise no fool!
I'm living high on the hog now, with enough cash to buy all the next-gen gaming consoles--and enough sense to buy none of the next-gen gaming consoles.

I hope PS4 isn't a bank breaker. People might actually buy this thing and give the industry the idea that all of this is totally acceptable

The Kinect will "be just listening enough to know that, 'Hey, I heard something interesting. Somebody's probably trying to wake me up.' It sends it to the console for confirmation, and then it can really power up to that high-power state."
something about how big the internet backlash is makes me think this thing will be a smashing success. like, with every dumb little thing that comes out about the system, it's all beside the point cause sports, tv, calladuty, racing, sports, tv, calladuty, racing, etc. etc. They were aiming for a crowd today that just wasn't anyone here/gaf/gaming sites/tech sites or anyone like that.
i hope that turns out to be the case. and i guess they have alienated every country but the U.S., so that doesn't bode well either.
I didn't think Kinect was all that special, but apparently they sold a butt load of them along with copies of _______ ???
Also I like how coddled some core gamers are thinking bro gamers DON'T read game sites. In college I hung around bro gamers and they'd read game sites all the fucking time. You don't think they've read this shit? Bro gamer trades in his shit and buys used regularly. Are you people daft?
20+ million. it was a very big success.
If we hadn't heard that internally some at Microsoft are shocked by the negative reaction

Xbox One is the most disappointing thing since my son.

No BC, No self publishing for indie, confusing as fuck used games mechanism (one guy say it works just like now and other say nope, gotta fee up), online not required or is it? And finally, no included headset that made the X360 the leading console for online derping.Yep. I wonder how much blame for this can be placed at Ballmers door? He's the one who greenlit the pretty unpleasant work ethos at MS, glad it worked out swell for him!
Yup, this is no J Allard team. This is disaster team.
Does xbox one actually PLAY blu rays?Microsoft's website for it mentions that it can play blu-ray movies:
For all that media talk they didn't even mention this.

My biggest concerns with the XB1 was potential gold pricing and locking games to one account and not the console. Clear those up and I am happy. No BC killed next gen for me but if they can clear this no used games/online 24 hours then I'm all ears.
Perhaps most intriguing, however, is that Xbox One gives game developers the ability to access Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform. That leads to a few obvious and immediate applications: All your downloaded and installed games and achievements are synced to the cloud and can be accessed and played without interruption on any Xbox One you sign in to; stable, dedicated servers for every multiplayer game rather than the notoriously fragile practice of hosting matches on one participant’s console; even multiplayer matches that can grow to 64, even 128 participants, rather than the usual limit of 16 or 32.
"We're going to support a used games ecosystem. We will talk more about how that is going to work. It's not going to work the same way it works today because we changed the way we think about ownership of the games."
Sounds like there will be a 'used' digital marketplace that Microsoft is the gatekeeper of.
I'm ok with this, especially since it'll spur other companies to follow suit.
I bet at least a third of MS' exclusive 15 titles are Kinect shit, xbla stuff, and Viva Piñata. Maybe a Who Wants To Be A Millionare game hosted by Courtney Cox.

On Twitter in Japan, the newly announced Xbox One has a couple of new nicknames. However, there is a bit of a good natured dispute over what the Xbox One's nickname will be: "Batsuichi" (Once Divorced) or "Hako 1" (Box 1).
I mean, they couldn't even put together a clear message of what their system is about on the day they unveiled it
I think they're just going to try to push the same message they used in the beginning of the conference. Something along the line of "This is an all-in-one box that will cover all of your entertainment needs."But it's not an all in one box; you still need a cable box. If you're a non-gamer interested in this as a streaming box, you'll have to pay an XBL sub on top of your monthly Netflix/Hulu/HBO subs. Why would a non gamer buy this instead of a Roku?

The NFL and Microsoft, through its next generation Xbox device, are combining to upgrade interactive TV viewing of pro football games in a multiyear agreement announced Tuesday. The next step after that, perhaps as early as 2014, will be bringing technology to the sidelines on tablets.http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000205083/article/nfl-microsoft-strike-deal-to-enhance-fans-tv-viewing-of-games
The deal is worth $400 million over five years for the NFL, according to a person familiar with the agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because financial details have not been made public.
"When you think about the sidelines, what is most important for us is how you make the game of football better, make what the coaches and players do better, using technology but preserving the competition," said Brian Rolapp, chief operating officer of NFL Media. "The challenge is how to bring technology to make it a better experience for them and for the fans.
"You can start with how we communicate with each other, whether it's game officials or coaches. Coaches can look at formations as they develop. We'll look at how do you do the still photos better, get more into real time? Is there a more efficient way to give replay officials a way of doing reviews better through technology?"
That's for the future, albeit the not-too-distant future.
Fans will get new television viewing innovations, including the ability to watch games, Skype video chat with other fans, view statistics, access highlights in real time and gather fantasy information about players and teams -- all on a single screen. For those who prefer multiple screens, fans can get an even deeper experience on mobile devices and tablets with SmartGlass technology.

$400 million. Not for Sunday Ticket, or any access to actual games. $400 million for fantasy football, "Skype," and other interactive features people already have on their fucking iPhone/Android/iPod/Laptop. For all the shitty stuff MS showed yesterday, THIS is the one that makes the absolute least sense.
Direct TV pays a BILLION just for Sunday Ticket. MS is paying nearly half, for nothing.

EA Communications Specialist Brad Hilderbrand promised us a closer look at Ignite at E3.
"Yes, given the timing and planning required for the Xbox One reveal event the EA Sports Ignite video was developed in a pre-rendered video format," Hilderbrand said. "We'll be showing off the game using in-game assets at E3."

Independent developers cannot self-publish their own games on Xbox Live Arcade. Instead, they must get a publishing deal--either with Microsoft Game Studios or with a third-party partner. Games published on Xbox Live Indie Games are exempt from that policy, but that marketplace isn't necessarily seen as viable.

My opinion is that MS will simply target lower resolution and thanks to that they will have most of fancy effects @ stable framerate. Sony on other hand target 1080p which means they will need more power to do same things.

That 30fpsvs60fps, even if technically possible, isn't going to happen.
Microsoft will just go "Both games must be pretty much the same or we won't let you publish it"
Exclusives however, I'm expecting a pretty big difference.

This thing only has HDMI? Hooooly shit Ms are living in a bubble. In college do you guys realize how many students who had a tv had an HDTV? VERY FEW. Guess what the core audience for people who buy COD is ?1?1?
Holy FUCK.
I like to troll but I never get emotionally invested in products. If one doesn't work, another will, who cares. But this is the first piece of entertainment tech product I've ever seen that I want to see fail. Really badly. So I can sit and watch and marvel it all.
How is it a marvel to watch a piece of consumer electronics bomb? It happens all the time. Even Microsoft isn't a stranger to it. Does anyone even remember the Zune? ...? That's what I thought.

The lulz from Vita and WiiU have been glorious treasures.Vita and Wii U are firecrackers compared to how spectacularly this will bomb. Just think of launch day when the Xbox Live servers go down and everyone brings home shiny new useless bricks.
HDMI only is exactly what it looks like: classism paraded as "for the living room". My cousiin's household doesn't have a single hdtv except downstairs. He games in his room because gaming downstairs takes away from tv time for other people. Their family isn't exactly rich, and sure, you can just spend an extra 400 bucks on acquiring a tv capable of hdmi out, but that's besides the entire point. Great, buy an hdtv for the home AND the dorm room! :what How are MS going to market that in places where hdtv adaptation is slower than America? What about the Diunx's and the Borys'?
Say :yeshrug?

I hate to interrupt an irrational rant with trivial stuff like facts, but any tv currently available to buyl is an HDTV, and all of them have HDMI in. It is easy to find an HDTV for under $200, unless Texas has some "magic talky box" tax unique to its Republic.
In your scenario where separate TVs are needed for both dorm room and home, are separate Xbox units also required? And if it's beside the entire point, why mention it?
If you want to get angry about HDMI, do it for the right reasons: HDMI is DRM forced on users, for which they pay a premium price, when other technologies cover the same ground easily and with no need for DRM.
uh, I believe that says "huge" xbox 360. that means they're gonna make a bigger one to make the xbox one look small.

himu i get where youre coming from, but seriously most families that are still using busted-ass sdtvs are not gonna be running out to buy a $400 xbx1. theyre gonna have a 360 with games from the fucking pawn shop, and when they do get some money its gonna be for a new tv instead of a new xbox. i know plenty of broke ass motherfuckers and the only ones still using sdtvs have them for their kids' bedrooms. everyone else upgraded during the holiday sales we've had for YEARS where you can get hdtvs for $200-300 dollars.
:rofl Silver users still have to keep the unit online, but can't play online.
So the One's OS is broken down to two virtual machines (VM), running simultaneously. One is optimized for games, and the other for apps. You know those instantaneous app switches that you saw at the keynote, going from a game to a movie and back again in a flash? That was the OS's VM-layout at work. In simple terms, it runs and draws two apps at once, one on the game side (it seems you can run non-games on this side), and one on the app side. They're only separated by a display panel, so switching is more or less just alt-tabbing over.
This design actually solves a lot more problems than just switching between the two. Because the app side launches as soon as you turn on your console and runs the whole time, it can perform background tasks, like keeping you in a matchmaking queue, while you are playing another game, or doing something else entirely.
Beyond that, the two-pronged layout fixes the main concern game developers have about consoles running apps, which is that it changes the constants that make working on consoles possible. An app-enabled system would perform differently if it's running zero apps compared to even two or three, probably. And it's already expensive enough to make a video game. If you need to create renders for a variety of available resource situations, that's just piling on in a pretty untenable way. If you're going to go to that trouble, you may as well just make PC games. But with the Xbox's split OS, it dedicates specific hardware resources to the two VM partitions, and they never share. This will probably result, occasionally, in one side (probably gaming) maxing itself out when there's enough beef in the Xbox to power through if it had full reign over the entire system. But it also, crucially, means console developers (and console players!) get the standardized performance that makes console gaming what it is.
This is made possible by a few things. First is the exact placement of the microphones. Because they need to be able to pick out exactly which direction a sound is coming from, this is a big deal. So after basically building from the ground up with its partner PrimeSense for the original Kinect, Microsoft hired a ton of sound experts to tear the microphone array apart and figure out how to optimize it. And after months of research, apparently, they put it right back the way they found it. Microsoft had stumbled onto the right answer its first try. Maybe checking your work is boring, but assuring that the mics were as well-positioned as possible is key to designing the rest of the accoutrements and getting them calibrated properly. Just like game developers, the Kinect team needs a set of constants to rally around.
The Xbox's sound output isn't an issue because the Kinect knows exactly what sound it's outputting, so it can cancel itself out as it analyzes the noise, no matter how loud you have your speakers. The popular example of that is a guy playing Call of Duty loud enough to kill a horse, and casually saying commands like "Delta team, Target Alpha", and the microphone takes a mess of noise and turns it into the exact commands. This feature will also, going forward, fix the old 30 Rock joke, played out at the Xbox One keynote, where someone on screen saying Xbox Off will turn off your Xbox.
Essentially, Microsoft has made the Xbox modular. The background tasks that will be offloaded to the cloud will be a serious deal in a large number of cases. You know how in Skyrim sometimes you can look at a specific part of a specific wall and your framerate will randomly dip down into the afterlife? That workload (which is probably a silly mistake, but still) would probably be shifted off to some Microsoft server, and never make it to your Xbox. The decision-making process of when to do that—it only fires on "latency insensitive" loads, not "latency sensitive" ones—still dictates that the majority of workload will still be done locally, client side (i.e. on your Xbox). But that's not always going to be the case.
It still doesn't really fix anything. If you want to play it, you need to buy a new tv if you're got an sdtv without hdmi.
GJ saying such a negative is "irrational" and "trivial" with the assumption that most families can just shell out 200 more bones just for a tv so little billie can play his xbox in his own room. I still stand by my original point: xbox one is classist.
Separate xbox units? I know you're in your 40's, but you couldn't be more out of touch. Typically college kids bring their tvs from far away and put their valuables in storage over summer months while school is out. I did it, everyone I knew did it, and everyone will continue doing it. You bring your system on plane or via car, in a thing called a suitcase. When you get to your dorm, you get a tv - maybe. Some aren't that lucky due to parents. If they bring their tv from home, that means a tv back home is missing. Someone will have to replace it when they get back. In either case, assuming the family doesn't have a tv with hdmi in capability for little Billy, they're going to be buying two hdmi capable televisions on top of the price of the xbox. It is highly anti-consumer, with the expectation that everyone buy new shit just to use their new fucking system, and has the money to do all of this. And fuck you for even suggesting such a counter argument is "irrational" or "trivial".
Maybe with monitors and under 19", has there been any "living room size" (20" or above?) under $200 HDMI/HDTV's? I haven't really been following that market but anything released since like 2006 or 2007 has had at least one HDMI input so all the bitching about the HDMI requirement is just bizarre to me.I was in the USA last year, shopped for a new TV; Walmart had crappy one for about 10-15% less than Best Buy's actual name-brands. I purchased a 32" Toshiba for $300, though there were smaller ones for as low as $180. I believe they were 20-24" but can't recall.
Himu complaining about hdmi only is funny to me. I can't remember the last time I went into a home that didn't have at least one hdtv. And they really aren't expensive to get anymore.HDMI only is going to fuck over my game streaming.
A year ago in NZ I picked up a 26" HDMI monitor for 260 bux brand spanking. Anyway, pretty sure Himus trollin, who seriously uses lame hypotheticals like 'little Jimmy'?
I like the look of this thing at least. I haven't had time to get the full scoop on the used games/always online deal yet
i dont think microsoft gives a fuck about where diunx lives
Diunx, do you have an hdtv? How much do they cost in your country? Could you go out and buy one NOW like most of us could do in our countries?

you have to admit, it *is* kind of funny that component/composite cable support lasted just one generation longer than RF adaptor support.

I'm just not seeing the benefit from the massive football fan of owning a XO. Unless each console comes with a subscription to the NFL sunday ticket? Which is DirecTV only, so if you have a different cable provider, thats a no?
Whats the draw here?

Unless they're drastically upping the price of XBL, they won't include a Sunday Ticket subscription with the console. For one, DirectTV would throw an epic fit as they paid $1 billion for that and charge non-Dtv Subscribers about $300 a year for it.

Exactly. MS payed less than half ($400m) of that, there's no fucking way they get access to Sunday Ticket. At the best Xbox One owners will be getting highlight videos of games, maybe even halftime highlights. Along with the fantasy football stuff.
I'm an avid fantasy football player but see no point in the Xbox One shit. I check my iPod to see how my team and league are doing, and I browse ESPN for other info.

Red Zone=whenever a team gets inside 20yds of the end zone, the channel takes you to the game; basically you're watching the end of scoring (or turnover) drives all around the league, not the actual full game. As Manabyte said most cable companies already offer it.
Red Zone is about $70/yr as a part of the Comcast sports package. Why would a non-gamer pay an XBL sub on top of that?

a recurring, possibly quite expensive monthly payment for something is different than a one time cost for a console. Maybe the Xbone and some games could be the big gift that was saved up for at christmas time? Not anymore because the Xbone is not just the cost of console+games, it's console+games+monthly internet payments. (and who is ben kuchera or anyone else to tell someone how to spend their money anyway?)
And in the context of his "hey all these decisions are great for Microsoft, look at it that way, brahs" article, it comes off as him holding on to some dumb shred for his shitty rationalizations for Microsoft's apparent attack on consumers.
All these little dumb decisions are about cutting off and alienating people (and pleasing U.S. cable+ISPs, which is the pink elephant, imo. because pleasing them is akin to holding back progress for their personal gain at this point.) Internet requirements, HDMI-only, U.S. TV focus...suppose they capture the upper middle and higher classes in the U.S...this leaves the rest of the world for Sony and Nintendo. That's not really a good thing for Xboners who want games on their console. Video games are not traditionally a high-class exclusive medium of entertainment.
No HDMI AND shitty internet?! I'm guessing HD vidya games aren't high on the list of importance to begin with.

This situation is not far fetched at all. They have a TV they don't want to replace, they don't want to pay for internet every month. but they want to buy a game console and some games that don't absolutely require HDMI or internet, because consoles never required these things before. because those things are not integral to being able to play a video game at all, unless you look at it from MS corporate headquarter's perspective.
These poor, poor people. It just seems unfair to me that there would be a next-gen HD console that not everyone will be able to use. If only we had a single-payer gaming system. Universal gaming console access should be a right of every human being!

There's got to be a Bill Plympton cartoon that sums this up succinctly. Somewhere.
remember when the PS3 networked all our PS3s together so other people's PS3's improved our own PS3's graphicsI recall there was even talk of having Cell Processors in your DVR, stereo, and refrigerator, which would auto link to perform this miracle.

That's why you have to be online every 24 hours. It can only store 24 hours worth of cloud energy at a time.
I wouldn't expect game journalists to do anything other than circle the wagons and spin, spin, spin. Even the ones who aren't directly in pocket (Polygon is okay with this? There has been much consternation, and certainly a large degree of confusion, about the new policies the Xbox One will impose on gamers. It seems that if you lend a copy of a game to a friend, and they want to play it on their own profile, they’ll have to pay a fee equivalent to the price of the game to be able to do so. If it is the case, it’s bewildering. It’s the end of something as ordinary and friendly as letting a buddy come over and borrow a couple of games from your shelf.
But there never has been freedom for games. The copyright messages printed on your average videogame impose draconian and unsocial instructions from a futuristic evil oppressive regime, that somehow exist in our era. Grab a box and look at the tiny print on the back, and there’s a good chance you’ll read:
“Unauthorised copying, lending, or resale under any scheme strictly prohibited.”
I nearly broke my eyeballs trying to read that on the rear-side of a copy of World In Conflict that happened to be near by. A copy I’ve now learned I do not have permission to lend to a friend. (It’s often said this is to deter library-style lending schemes, but let’s be sensible here – the language is deliberately ambiguous.)
Lending, or as I like to call it – sharing – is loathed by copyright holders. A borrowed game is an unsold game, I imagine they probably say to each other without evidence for such an obviously nonsensical claim. It is only the natural consequence of things for this new console to make sharing so extraordinarily difficult or expensive.
And yes, that oh-so-often given response is absolutely true.
“But what about Steam? YOU HYPOCRITE!”
Steam, and so many other digital distribution platforms, are abhorrent when it comes to notions of sharing. Our willing allowing of the PC gaming market to become unshareable makes us all complicit in this erosion of freedom. We went from plastic circles with idiotic impositions of limited installs, to pure data and not even the option for those few installs. And we thanked them for the convenience.
To return to Phillips’ quote, we did not resist at all.
There is absolutely no downside to a gaming console widening its berth and bringing in a larger audience. Creating content for a console, or any platform, is not, despite whatever alarmist fears circulate, a zero sum proposition. A team spending time on the Kinect’s voice commands does not mean the controller gets shortchanged. Adding a whole side of the OS dedicated to apps and non-game content does not necessarily mean your games are being shortchanged—especially with all the lengths Microsoft has gone to ensure performance. (The static RAM on the CPU/CPU SoC is a bigger deal than it’s being given credit for.) Microsoft is a very large company. There are seven thousand people on the Xbox team alone. It can work on more than one thing at once.
Truthfully, answer this: Have you been without internet for more than 24 hours while trying to play a console game recently? Is that a regular occurrence? Have you lent a game on a disc to a friend that you needed back in a timely fashion? Have you closed your laptop or turned off your cell phone when having private conversations? Have you spent any seriously any time considering, celebrating, or lamenting the size of the consoles or other entertainment devices in your home?
For many of reading this, the answer to at least one of those questions might well be a Yes. But that does not matter. Increasingly, and for a long time now, the world has been moving forward. For a great many people—the vast majority even, probably—things have progressed to the point that these simply aren’t concerns with enough impact, however vocal, to warrant holding up the pack. That sucks. It does. (My family is still, insanely, on dial-up.) But the needs of the many, and all that.
An undetermined system to transfer used games, instead of just swapping out discs; required connection to the internet once a day (we are pretty sure); mandatory Kinect; the internet being central to core features like cloud gaming; and backwards compatibility. These are the big complaints, and looking at them, it’s hard to explain the furor they’ve stirred up.
Even in the pre-Steam days, it wasn't easy to share PC games. I remember my friends and I had to borrow or photocopy manuals for answering security questions.

I actually used to like that shit... input the 3rd letter of the 4th word in paragraph 7. Some of the Ultima games and Myst etc had stuff like that IIRC. Eye of Horus! One of my biggest regrets is letting my boxed Ultima VII and Ultima Underworld games get destroyed... the maps and bible like manuals they came with are awesome... closest thing I can think of in the console realm is maybe those old SNES paks that came with Prima guide bundles, or maybe the Link to the Past map etc.
Edit: apparently I might be wrong on both counts (myst / ultima) - plenty of games I recognise here though (amiga versions)! http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=55531&page=1
Game Over? What's the worst thing they could get away with? Having to call support?
So what actually happens if you haven't been connected at least once every 24 hours? Because my internet was crapping out a few months ago.
Caveat: this Xbox One development info was circulated by Microsoft to its partners at the beginning of this year. It may have changed, but based on what we saw this week, probably not in any major way.
Running: The game is loaded in memory and is fully running. The game has full access to the reserved system resources, which are six CPU cores, 90 percent of GPU processing power, and 5 GB of memory. The game is rendering full-screen and the user can interact with it.
Constrained: The game is loaded in memory and is still running, but it has limited access to the system resources. The game is not rendering full screen in this state; it either is rendering to a reduced area of the screen or is not visible at all. The user cannot interact with the game in this state. System resource limits in this state are four CPUs, 5 GB of memory, and 45 percent of GPU power if the game is rendering to a reduced area of the screen, or 10 percent of GPU power if the game is not visible.
Suspended: The game is loaded in memory but is not running, meaning that the system has stopped scheduling all threads in the game process. The game has no access to CPUs or to the GPU processing power, but it still has the same 5 GB of memory reserved.
NotRunning: The game is not loaded in memory and is not running, and the system has no game-history information about the previous execution of the game. A game would be in NotRunning state in any of these three scenarios: -The game has not been run since the console started. -The game crashed during the last execution. -The game did not properly handle the suspend process during the last execution and was forced to exit by the system.
Terminated: The game is not loaded in memory and is not running, which is identical to the NotRunning state in terms of system resource usage. Terminated state, however, indicates that during the last execution of the game, the game process was successfully suspended and then terminated by the system. This means that the game had a chance to save its state as it was suspended; the next time the game is activated, it can load this previous state data and continue the user experience from the same position. A game, for example, can start from the same level and position in the player’s last session without showing any front-end menu.
Got all that? Suddenly, saving and pausing games seems so pedestrian, doesn't it?
I'm less worried about people who can't AFFORD internet - though to be fair, it'll suck when it's the tail end of the gen and someone's mom brings them home an xbox one for 150-200 bucks and they can't use it due to internet but that is becoming increasingly more and more unlikely. I'm more worried about people who can afford internet but don't have ease of access due to living in the country and they don't live near the main road. People only live in cities apparently!
haha, the worst thing? your system becomes a brick until you connect again. There's no way in hell they're that far gone into Lala-land.
Basically Microsoft's target market for the Xbox One is upper-middle class (and higher) Americans in urban areas
While Tuesday's Xbox One presentation answered some questions about Microsoft's upcoming system, it left just as many or more unsettled. Luckily, Ars got a chance to sit down with General Manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms Matt Booty to try to get more answers. While he wasn't able to answer some of the most pressing questions about the system, he was able to dive deep into some of the technical details.
Our first question had to do with the 30,000-server cloud architecture that Microsoft says the Xbox One will use to help support "latency-insensitive computation" in its games. What does that mean exactly, and can laggy cloud data really help in a video game where most things have to be able to respond locally and immediately?
"Things that I would call latency-sensitive would be reactions to animations in a shooter, reactions to hits and shots in a racing game, reactions to collisions," Booty told Ars. "Those things you need to have happen immediately and on frame and in sync with your controller. There are some things in a video game world, though, that don't necessarily need to be updated every frame or don't change that much in reaction to what's going on."
"One example of that might be lighting," he continued. "Let’s say you’re looking at a forest scene and you need to calculate the light coming through the trees, or you’re going through a battlefield and have very dense volumetric fog that’s hugging the terrain. Those things often involve some complicated up-front calculations when you enter that world, but they don’t necessarily have to be updated every frame. Those are perfect candidates for the console to offload that to the cloud—the cloud can do the heavy lifting, because you’ve got the ability to throw multiple devices at the problem in the cloud."
Booty added that things like physics modeling, fluid dynamics, and cloth motion were all prime examples of effects that require a lot of up-front computation that could be handled in the cloud without adding any lag to the actual gameplay. And the server resources Microsoft is putting toward these calculations will be much greater than a local Xbox One could handle on its own. "A rule of thumb we like to use is that [for] every Xbox One available in your living room we’ll have three of those devices in the cloud available," he said.
While cloud computation data doesn't have to be updated and synced with every frame of game data, developers are still going to have to manage the timing and flow of this cloud computing to avoid noticeable changes in graphic quality, Booty said. “Without getting too into the weeds, think about a lighting technique like ambient occlusion that gives you all the cracks and crevices and shadows that happen not just from direct light. There are a number of calculations that have to be done up front, and as the camera moves the effect will change. So when you walk into a room, it might be that for the first second or two the fidelity of the lighting is done by the console, but then, as the cloud catches up with that, the data comes back down to the console and you have incredibly realistic lighting."
Does that mean that Xbox One games will feature graphics that suddenly get much more realistic as complex data finally finishes downloading from the cloud? "Game developers have always had to wrestle with levels of detail... managing where and when you show details is part of the art of games," Booty said. "One of the exciting challenges going forward is a whole new set of techniques to manage what is going to be offloaded to the cloud and what’s going to come back.”
And what about those times when a gamer doesn't have an active Internet connection to make use of the cloud's computational power? Microsoft has confirmed that single-player games don't have to be online to work, but all this talk of cloud computing seems to suggest that these games might not look or perform as well if they don't have access to a high-speed connection.
"If there’s a fast connection and if the cloud is available and if the scene allows it, you’re obviously going to capitalize on that," Booty told Ars. "In the event of a drop out—and we all know that Internet can occasionally drop out, and I do say occasionally because these days it seems we depend on Internet as much as we depend on electricity—the game is going to have to intelligently handle that." Booty urged us to "stay tuned" for more on precisely how that intelligent handling would work, stressing that "it’s new technology and a new frontier for game design, and we’re going to see that evolve the way we’ve seen other technology evolve."
I don't really see any other way it would work.Temporary brick that has you call a hotline after which they either remotely unlock it give you a code or something to do it yourself. There wouldn't even have to be a human on the other end.
Game Over? What's the worst thing they could get away with? Having to call support?

what the game cases look like
(http://i2.minus.com/iuSVj35JSKp65.jpg)
there's no reason to buy retail games, is there? I'm under the impression that it works like retail PC games. The only advantage is that you won't be downloading the data, but with preloading games, the timeliness aspect isn't an issue; and with the cloud, you better hope you don't have data caps.
With the Xbone being complete shit, and knowing the PS4 will have at least half of the same dumbass stuff, I've lost all excitement of "next gen." Wake me up for next next gen.Everyone wants to avoid next gen, but Nintendo avoided it first.
haha, the worst thing? your system becomes a brick until you connect again.
It's DRM. Plain and simple. They're having the console phone-home every 24 hours to make sure your installed games code or whatever printed on the disc hasn't been found on another X-box within said 24-hours without the used game fee "pass" allowing it.
Everyone keeps saying 24 hours, but Phil Harrison wasn't even sure that was it
I'm confused at the confusion, but i'm probably just tired :
you buy a game and install it - then it's registered as being owned by you "in the cloud" via a game+user id association.
You brick your machine and you get a replacement and then you can redownload the games you already have a license for - just like steam. If you kept the disks you reinstall and it knows you already have a license for that game and doesn't attempt to charge you. I suspect this might all be done with activation codes a la PC too - it's the easiest way. New physical games then act -just- like PC games, second hand games go "please enter your code - if you don't have one, please click here to purchase one"
Also - when Steam gets brought up it misses one big thing - you buy something on steam , it's yours forever and, until a -major- architecture shift happens in PC land, will remain that way for a long time. MS and Sony have both pulled shit where previous -downloaded- games are no longer playable on the next iteration of hardware so this is -not- the same as Steam.
edit :Quotehaha, the worst thing? your system becomes a brick until you connect again.
i've missed this part it seems - so they are going to ask you to log in every 24 hours to validate games you've already validated? I don't understand why that would be. I suspect there might be something more to it that there is some mechanism to try and force the online connection for cloudy/experience related shit (translation : upload usage data so they can market to you more agressively)
Ah Right - i was clearly tired so ... even though you buy the license when you then sell it on, you no longer have the right to use it and you have to keep the disks/not sell them on and the other person has to buy a game at pretty much full price anyways.
Assuming that Gamestop trade-ins will be possible, what if somebody steals yours discs and comes to Gamestop?
Okay, I'll ask again. With asterisks for clarity.
How is *Gamestop* going to know if a disc is bound or unbound?
Gamestop will insert X1 disc into X1 or some device provided by MS.Internet connection required.
Unless things have dramatically changed since the last time I was back home, a very large amount of Gamestops don't have internet connections. But the Azure cloud thing explains it.
Now, the better question is, why the fuck would Gamestop agree to any of this?
God, these game companies are greedy fucks. Doctrine of first sale applies to everyone except their special snowflake asses. I hope the whole fucking parade of suits that came up with this horseshit (and all the other crap that's ruined the fucking industry) end up answering for all of this when the dust settles, instead of getting away scot-free while the largely blameless developers are left holding the bag of flaming dogshit.
I hope, but I know otherwise.

yeah, well, tell those dirty poors to get out of the boonies and start living like actual people. The cloud need not be sullied by the dirt under a peasant's fingernails. If entire communities don't have good internet, then maybe they shouldn't spend $999 on a Xbone.

So basically MS has mostly first party?Sorry, that was just a list of first parties. I edited.
I like the wild dystopian ideas people are coming up with using these required cameras. Like, to watch a movie, the camera will sense how many people are in the room and change extra per person.:lol

So PS4 will have better first party games, more Japanese games, and better versions of third party games (bububu cloud). Why would anyone choose the xbone over ps4?
The Xbox One is set to get 15 exclusives over the course of its first year. But what of PC versions? Last time I checked, Xbox and Windows were playing for the same team, so why not? Here’s what Booty told Shacknews:
“The Windows 8 gamer is certainly going to participate in some of that content… We have got everything from very, very casual games, like our very much improved and reimagined Solitaire, all the way to graphically complicated games like The Harvest.”
The Harvest was originally a cell phone game.

Over the paste few days, we have been reading comments and message boards following the Xbox One announcement. There are a few questions regarding used games. I wanted to clarify and provide this official statement:
The ability to trade in and resell games is important to gamers and to Xbox. Xbox One is designed to support the trade in and resale of games. Reports about our policies for trade in and resale are inaccurate and incomplete. We will disclose more information in the near future.

The Xbox One's heavy reliance on the Kinect for voice commands will eventually include two-way conversations, according to two sources who tested out the still-in-development feature.
In one possible scenario, Kinect used its facial recognition to scan a room full of people and note if there was someone in the room it didn't recognize. It then told the console owner that there is someone in the room it didn't recognize and asked the new person to identify themselves. Once the person said their name, Kinect welcomed them and saved their information to the console.
Xbox One's ability to speak will allow it to function more like the iPhone's Siri, according to Microsoft officials who presented the feature. The voice may not be available at the console's launch, but if it isn't it will be added in a post launch patch within the first few months.
It's called the Xbox One because when you see it, you turn one degree and keep walking.

This is under the assumption that Sony isn't planning to bork used games too.
The death of GameStop would definitely speed up the death of consoles in America greatly. :hyper
Well, it was a good run. Good thing I have a backlog to last a lifetime.
Citizen. Identify yourself.
Since its announcement on Tuesday, critics of the new Xbox have littered the Internet with complaints about everything from the size and shape of the console to the upgrades made to the famously ergonomic Xbox controller. Chief among all complaints, however, has been that Microsoft's presentation focused too strongly on how the Xbox One will change how people behave in living room, and not strongly enough on how the device will improve gaming.
These critics couldn't be more wrong, and they're missing the point, to boot.
Microsoft has nothing to prove. . .
Xbox Live is now powerful enough to allow for a transformative gaming experience. Microsoft claims that the new Xbox Live's 300,000 servers have more computing power than the entire world's computing power in 1999, put together. The "infinite power of the cloud," as they call it, brings with it the unparalleled capability for users to flawlessly play multiplayer games with friends without delay and the added capability to record and share their gaming achievements over the Internet. It is difficult to understate the experiential difference between this paid and technically superior service and Sony's less impressive PlayStation Network.CLOUD
Critics missed the point: the unveiling of the Xbox One was not a competition against PlayStation, or even an existential argument for plugged-in devices in the smartphone age. The Xbox One is not trying to compete with Tivo and cable boxes, Blu-Ray players and media computers, either.
The unveiling of the Xbox One was not an opening salvo against this motley of heterogeneous competition, but instead a champagne-popping ceremony at what is the beginning of the end. By packaging all these extraordinary capabilities so elegantly and by leading with such length in every facet, Microsoft has practically won the war for the soul of the living room already. All that remains is to see how competitors will exist in the shadow of Microsoft's new world order, and to find out what innovation they'll come up with next.
GAMESTOP SHARES HAVE DROPPED 20% THIS WEEK.
I fully expect them to put xbone in the back, with a huge ass warning on used games and required internet and ps4 in the forefront of the store with a shit load of ps4 ads.
Before that idiot MANABYTE comes and posts, this is AWFUL news as much as people hate gamestop. Gamestop bought all of the competition, so gamestop IS the game store now. Gamestop also brings mainstream attention to games, employs a shit load of people, and sells undeniably the most games out of any single retailer. If Gamestop goes :dead that is a massive hit on the games industry in regards to exposure and sales. Gamestop says that most used game trade ins go towards the purchase of a new game!
Hoping they'll bounce back from this.
sorry, it's an involuntary spasm i have whenever people earnestly use made-in-marketing phrases like 'game changer'LMAO
i'll try to be more tolerant of all the little lime green ace bandages we've got running around here

Considering MS not only did not invite any Japanese media to the event, but actually blocked the ones who came on their own dime from attending, I wouldn't count on MS spending a plug nickel on anything for the Japanese market. They've ceded it entirely.

The Japanese market is irrelevant, especially for MS. I'm more baffled by them apparently blowing Europe off.

Holy shit :lol
Are there any news articles about this?
They don't need to sell a billion of anything to make this successful. MS sold a shit ton of 360s with next to no presense in Japan, they can do it again theoretically. But they likely won't because the system seems to disregard Europe. Might as well name it USAboxThe Japanese market is irrelevant, especially for MS. I'm more baffled by them apparently blowing Europe off.
They're going to have a hard time reaching that goal of one billion sold if they're just blowing off industrialized countries with over a hundred million people.
The Japanese market is irrelevant, especially for MS. I'm more baffled by them apparently blowing Europe off.The Japanese consumer may be irrelevant to them, but they sure as hell need Japanese developers else this thing will fall even harder into a pool of shit jelly than it is already looking to.
They're nice to have, but I think a platform could make a fine go of it in the USA without them. You're probably right. I asked a friend about his opinions of the new Xbox and his reply was "I just want to play FIFA". He will stick with his 360 as long as they continue to release FIFA for it and then upgrade to the next Xbox.

Yeah, I'm just laughing at the Microsoft guy who said they're going to sell a billion, PD. I know they don't need Japan to reach whatever their goals are, that's pretty clear by how soundly they're sending the message that the country can go fuck itself.Wait, someone from MS actually said they're gonna sell a billion? Oh man, I assumed you were talking about the 1b software investment comment. I guess each MS guy is trying to 1up the next with baffling statements lmao
Do they need Japanese developers? As a collective, absolutely. Capcom, SEGA, Konami, Eidos, Square Enix, Atlus etc sum up to be quite a significant bunch of sales and would be missed by gamers.
Nope. The Japanese market is irrelevant, especially for MS. Uhh, doesn't add up to nearly as much as you think in the US, chief.
Mostly correct. During the 1990's, MS was
obsessed with potential threats to Windows.
When Sony introduced the PlayStation they
bleated about how it was like putting a computer
in the living room and named their gaming
division 'Sony Computer Entertainment' and blah blah. MS took the imaginary threat seriously and
basically came up with the Xbox to crush what
they thought could be a threat to Windows. It's important to realize that starting in the 1990's
and continuing on until today, everything MS has
created has fundamentally been a reactionary
product. They see a company come up with
something, they decide it could be a threat to
them, and they come up with a similar competing product. There is nothing resembling
a creative impulse at MS, just a constant paranoia
about competition and desire to protect their
Windows monopoly. Macintosh -> Windows
Netscape -> Internet Explorer
Java -> ActiveX
OpenGL -> DirectX
PlayStation -> Xbox
Palm -> Windows Mobile iPod -> Zune
iPhone -> Windows Phone
Google -> Bing And so on and so forth. Once you understand the
kind of company MS is, then you can understand
how they could make something like the Xbone.
When I was grabbing my Wii U yesterday in GAME the dude at the counter said that they have had over 100 pre-orders already for the Xbone at £20 a pop.
Jesus wept.
man i'm so annoyed at all this xbox drama, whatever happened to talking about actual stuff? let's talk about the kinect 2,surely there is a chance of finaly making a motion game that work with it right? that should be cool no?
The two analog sticks are slightly smaller and have been redesigned with new ridges instead of strategically placed bumps. On engineer told me they now take 25-percent less force to move. And then there is the D-Pad which got a much needed design – it’s now a much more aggressive “X” or plus sign.
During a tour of Microsoft’s Xbox Scientific Labs, engineers explained to us that a key change—flipping the rear battery pack 90-degrees and putting it inside the controller — has shifted the center of gravity, making the new device “feel” lighter. It’s true, it did.
The new controller is also filled with some new technology, the most noticeable of which might be the new haptic feedback motors in the triggers, (it also now use magnetic sensors instead of mechanical ones). The Xbox One controllers still have the same two larger motors for gameplay vibration (explosions, getting shot, etc), but now there’s a tiny motor in each trigger, which means you can get new, subtle bits of feedback during gameplay...
On the front of the new controller, you’ll find an IR sensor. It allows it to communicate with the Xbox One’s new Kinect controller. While Microsoft didn’t go into great detail about how this will be used in gameplay, it does add one interesting feature. Imagine there are two people playing in front of an Xbox One. The Kinect knows, via facial recognition, who they are. It also knows, thanks to the IR sensors, who is holding which controller. If the two players switch controllers, they do not start controlling each other’s characters. Instead, Xbox One sees that they are each holding different controllers and communicates with the controllers through Kinect to switch player controls.
There is also a high-speed connection port on the Xbox One controller, but Microsoft wasn’t ready to offer any details on what future peripherals might plug into it.
One of my stops on the Microsoft campus was to a testing lab were they’ve built proprietary systems to torture test the new controllers. From the looks of things, these controllers are fairly tough: I saw a robot arm swinging a controller around to ensure that no random buttons get hit during intense game play or, I guess, anger.
Microsoft has also been putting the near final controllers through a rigorous test where they replicate 10 year's worth of button depressions in two days (that’s roughly 2 million presses, which is 4-5 presses per second). Not only were they testing button durability, but the system also read the actuation on the other side to record any and all fails. I also saw a slo-mo video of a drop-test where the Xbox One controller bounced off a hard floor; only section of plastic popped off, as it was designed to do, so so the engineers could see the real-time effects of the drop on internal components. The engineer told us the controller performed as expected.
Dunno, but xbots should never be underestimated.360 survived RROD after all, some people from MS deserved to be jailed for life for that if you ask me.
Marketing machine is certainly gearing up.

Haha maxy brought up 360 surviving trod? Ps2 survived dre. Every person I knew with a ps2 bought at least one to two more ps2s. Thanks for ignoring history!
Dude by 2002 - after year of owning ps2 - my ps2 could no longer read CDs (blue back Games) and half the time I used a DVD (game) I had to put it in at least ten times in order to get it to work. I bought three ps2s so maybe my perspective is skewed.
In fact, time for another edition of Fun Facts.
On the NA 360 top games list, the first Japanese game comes in at 49th place. It's RE5, natch. Capcom has two more in top 100, til our next Japanese publisher arrives in 106th place. That's SE, of course, with the obvious. Coming in next, at 131st, is Namco. Tecmo follows soon after. Sega, 173rd. Konami arrives at 437th place.
Of these publishers, Capcom appears the most and the highest, with about six games in the top 200. SEGA appears often but not very high, Namco appears about four times in the top 300, and the Eidos branch of SE also appears a few times in the top 300. Tecmo Koei has like three in the top 400. Konami, lol. Atlus? Lol, the only game they even had any minor success with was Catherine, which sold under 100k on Xbox and doesn't appear in the top 500.
MS doesn't need them. At most, Eidos (but not SE), Capcom, and maybe Namco would be worth courting, but they could definitely get by without the lot, no sweat.
I never saw disk read error or a red screen or w/e. It would go straight to the memory card screen. The worst is the wait to see if you'll get the Playstation 2 "blip" and know everything's OK.

A marketing guy and a producer have responded so far. I'm going to bet right now that this has no impact on anything. If the PS4 blocks used games, it was decided months ago.
Now I certainly believe that Sony would be very smart to blow MS out the water at E3 with a no-DRM announcement, thanking the fans for convincing them. But I doubt it will happen.
Yeah, they're going to pull some kind of weasel thing cuz there's no way they'll tell the third parties to fuck off.
A Microsoft patent published recently reveals that the company is looking at awarding achievements to users for watching linear video content.
The patent, which is titled Awards and Achievements Across TV Ecosystem and was first reported on by Games Industry International, explores the idea of rewarding viewers with achievements in a similar way that games on the Xbox 360 reward players for completing certain tasks within video games. The patent does not indicate which platform this technology would be applied to — there are no references to the Xbox One, Xbox 360 or Windows platforms — however at the recent Xbox One reveal, Microsoft focused heavily on the console's television-related features.
The background of the document reads: "Traditional television viewing experiences tend to be passive, and do not frequently provide opportunities for a viewer to engage with the programming. Additionally, with the proliferation of digital video recording devices, advertisers are finding it increasingly difficult to introduce their advertisements to viewers."
It continues: "To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content. Producers, distributors, and advertisers of the video content may set viewing goals and award a viewer who has reached the goals."
Examples of goals listed include watching an entire series from beginning to end, watching a certain number of commercials contained within the linear video content and "performing a specific action while watching the linear video content."
Awards listed in the patent include virtual viewer scores (presumably similar to Xbox Live's gamer score) and physical awards like coupons and products.
the console's ability to compute processes on the cloud is "definitely an area where the Xbox One has a step up over PS4, and it opens up for many interesting things.
"It's perfect for open-world games like ours as it enables techniques to make the game worlds more alive and social, such as persistence and asynchronous multiplayer features," he continued. "We are already using server-side computations in our PC hunting game theHunter, so that's nothing new for us as a concept. But Microsoft's solution may allow us to do this more efficiently and to a greater [extent]."

MCV has received word from retail sources that pre-orders for the Xbox One are tracking ahead of PS4 in many UK stores.
In fact, one told us that in the 24 hours after Xbox One’s reveal last week the total number of pre-orders it received for Microsoft’s machine outstripped the total number of PS4 pre-orders it had accrued since Sony’s reveal in February.
There is some good news for Sony – the same sources revealed a significant increase in PS4 pre-orders in the day following the Xbox One reveal.
The consensus is that many gamers were waiting until they’d had a look at both machines before making their buying decision.
The numbers may well some surprise some online onlookers who have seemed to delight in revelling in the PR mess Microsoft has created itself since last week’s reveal.
But they should also serve as a reminder that the angry internet masses are often not representative of the wider buying public.
But it is know for beingcheappoor.
no way will the video game community be down with anti-used/drm systems. No other physical media does this. It's an expectation and these companies are fighting basic psychology. But lol gamers are weak;etc lolol
Not to mention that more than gamers will fight this. Entire countries will be suing MS and Sony up the ass. It's half the reason I don't believe Sony is implementing what MS is doing, or at least in the same manner, because Japan is their base and Japan has a HUGE used game market. So far they've lost to MS and Nintendo in NA, Vita is bombing, so putting this stuff into ps4 in JAPAN would not only be foolish it would be suicide. Microsoft can do this gamble because they're fucking MICROSOFT. Sony, however, isn't in the position to do ANYTHING like this.

Xbox is going to great lengths to win the next-gen games hardware battle, and a new deal with Sky could clinch it.
Sources familiar with the situation tell us that Microsoft is in talks with the broadcaster to sell Xbox One with Sky subscriptions. The device could work as a set-top-box or companion device - but most importantly the console could be sold at a hugely reduced cost.
The move may already have been signed off. We could even get official confirmation as soon as Monday night, when Xbox opens E3 with its yearly press conference.

yay
Impulse Triggers – Xbox One’s Wireless Controller sports four vibration motors – a small one behind each trigger that adds precise haptic feedback to the finger tips, and a larger in each grip for large scale rumbles. This gives users a sense of in-game directionality and depth, creating rich, immersive experiences where gunshots, car crashes and explosions can come to life.
Higher Quality Headset Audio – The data transfer rate between the controller and console has been improved, allowing for higher fidelity audio in communication headsets. In-game chat over Xbox Live, according to the team, will be in many cases clearer than talking on a phone.
Revamped Thumbsticks – The thumbsticks are built for precision and comfort. They’re smaller and outlined with a knurled texture for better grip. Competitive gamers will be pleased to hear the sticks require 25 percent less force to move, allowing you to adjust your aim in a first-person shooter or execute a half-circle sweep in a fighting game faster and more accurately. The controller also uses advanced electronics that reduce thumbstick deadzone in the center.
Brand New D-Pad – The old Xbox 360 D-pad is replaced by a new design that pays homage to classic controllers and is architectured to deliver more precision and tactile feedback for gaming. The D-pad’s cross shape is honed to provide accurate cardinal direction input, sweeping movements and combinations – important factors for sports and fighting games, and other experiences.
Buttons, Buttons, Buttons – The A, B, X and Y buttons are lower to the controller with tighter spacing, making the transition between each one smoother. A new, three-step manufacturing process gives these buttons a more premium look, as if the letters on them are suspended in 3-D space. The size and placement of the Xbox button has also changed so the view and menu buttons are more accessible.
Seamless Connectivity – Each controller uses a combination of invisible reflective technology and LEDs to send a patterned infrared signal to your console and Kinect sensor. Not only does this make pairing the devices seamless, but it enables Kinect to associate the controller with whoever is holding it. This introduces innovative experiences, such as player switching, where a split screen display can swap positions on the TV if users change seats on the couch.
Low Power State – If you’re watching a movie or need to step away from the TV, the controller enters a low power state that conserves your battery. The moment you pick it up again, it will be ready for use without having to resynch with the console.
Refined for Comfort – The controller’s design is deliberately honed to the closest tenth of a millimeter (http://news.xbox.com/2013/05/xbox-one-beauty-of-xbox-one) to offer the most comfortable fit in users’ hands, and was tested extensively by a broader age group than ever before to ensure it is optimized for as many people as possible. According to the team’s research, this improves gameplay performance and allows comfortable gaming for longer periods of time.
Angled Triggers and Bumpers – The triggers and bumpers are carefully designed for performance and comfort. The specific angling allows for a natural fit for your fingers, and the triggers require a lighter pull, so squeezing it repeatedly is an easier and more precise action.
Internal Battery Cavity –The compartment that houses AA batteries is built into the interior of the controller, providing more room at the bottom for your fingers to grip. Another convenient improvement is that the controller is both wireless and a wired– simply plug it into your console with a mini USB cable and the connection automatically switches to preserve battery life.
Higher Quality Headset Audio – The data transfer rate between the controller and console has been improved, allowing for higher fidelity audio in communication headsets. In-game chat over Xbox Live, according to the team, will be in many cases clearer than talking on a phone.
A new connector for voice chat and other accessories can power a 5.1 headset without amplifiers.
Must be a crappy port then.

The PS3 slim was the sleekest console since the PS2. The Wii looked nice enough as well, though kind of cheap (understandable, seeing as how it was cheap)

Microsoft has now come out in the open and stood behind what we all feared. There's no confusion left but in the tiniest nuances of this story: they are gunning for us as consumers, and it's either we stop it now or this industry radically changes into something not worth saving (if it even survives at all anyway).
If this not worth a boycott, absolutely no bit of game news would ever warrant such. If this is not worth a boycott, then we might as well all just go home and allow any business to take advantage of us simply because we don't want to put in the effort to push back. If this is not worth a boycott, then we never really loved games in the first place and this hobby of ours needs to go down in flames anyway.
I say, if this is not worth a boycott, then nothing in this industry ever would be.

Sure, if it were just GAF, it would mean little. But look at it this way: If GAF can actually boycott something, isn't that a sign that people with more self-discipline are looking into skipping the product as well?
Fun fact: Elvis's favorite childhood comic book character was Captain Marvel Jr. That's who he based his hairstyle on, and when he got older and drugged out that's who he partially based his stage costumes on. So basically all those chicks were throwing their panties at a comic nerd cosplayer.
I think it's been shown over and over that the hardcore is and has always been the backbone of your console. Casuals will only get you so far. If the hardcore hivemind rejects the XONE it will most definitely affect it's overall success.

I disagree. GAF represents hardcore gamers to the nth degree, I don't believe they represent a majority of gamers. The dudebros and children who bought millions of Xbox 360s this gen are still going to buy this thing for online CoD and Madden, and whatever new IP Microsoft creates to replace Gears. Most of my dudebro friends are turned off by the TV focus thus far but I'm willing to bet they'll all come around once the 15 GAMEZ are revealed.
I could be wrong but I'm starting to believe the DRM freak out seems bigger to us due to the online community we congregate with. Nintendo kind of proved you don't need the "hardcore" to do well, and I'm getting the impression MS is going the same route except they're focusing on college kids and 30something yo dads instead of mothers.

Your problem is that you have yet to accept the reality nor the truth: Dudebro and children trade in and lends games. ALL THE TIME. Even a stupid ass snotty nosed brat will realize he's been shafted. So yeah, MAYBE they'll buy it - if retailers don't put it in the back of the store, or openly suggest shoppers get other systems instead. And that's assuming they'll get it after this backlash.
Your problem is that you don't assume dudebros consider themselves hardcore gamers or read gaming sites. I knew plenty of frat guys who read gaming sites regularly, played games regularly (albeit, CoD, GTA;etc), traded games regularly. Dudebros have likely already READ the gaming sites and heard this news. You know what dudebros who don't do that do? They call up their nerdy game friend (me) and ask about what system they should get.
It's like you are ignoring history. Entirely. Do you have any dudebro gamer friends?
As for children. LOL. When mommy and daddy read this shit about xbone on MAJOR NEWS OUTLETS such as bbc, cnn, time;etc. they're not gonna buy that shit. Are you crazy? :lol
As for gaf being a representation of hardcore gamers. WHO DO YOU THINK BUYS CONSOLES AT LAUNCH?
You keep saying,"this will be successful lol" when all the issues stacked together are bigger than Shaka's penis.

I have a fairly reliable sample I use to gauge things. It's how I can separate irrelevant GAF freakouts like MW2 and horse armour from GAF freakouts that represent a wider picture like PSP Go and DmC.
I remain pretty confident this used game DRM/online check is something that extends well beyond the GAF radius.
posted this stuff elsewhere, but i like sniffing my own butt enough to repost here:
Hardcore gamers don't amount to shit in the grand profit scheme - parents do, and the more convoluted you make things for parents, the less likely they're gonna buy into it. My fiance is still pissed about her Rock Band songs being tied to the hardware when her kids' Wii broke. Guess who's never getting a Wii U? I would absolutely bet good money on this push flaming out spectacularly and quickly. Game consoles aren't PCs, they aren't phones, and they aren't tablets. They're different animals altogether, and parents are always going to see them as toys. When your kids' toys make you jump through a bunch of hoops before they're "allowed" to loan them to their buddy down the street, alongside nickel-and-diming you to death, you tell your kids to find other hobbies.
Making it an extra hassle to trade in games, restrictions on loaning, constant online checks - combine that with a $400 console and they're basically all but outright telling parents to just go ahead and get their kids an iPad, where all the games are either free or eventually a dollar. Having to wait 30 days just to give something away, making sure it's connected for the daily check, filling out a bunch of form shit at the game store just to trade something in and then getting even less for more trouble, fielding constant "why isn't my game working" complaints - all that's just needless bother to a parent. Buying your kid a $20 iTunes card and saying "here, go nuts" is easy as pie.
I can't wait to see the ashen-faced public backpedaling and apologies a year from now. I love a good self-immolation.
And now I'm getting kinda tired of talking about it. I'm not buying any of this shit, so it's pointless. I'd rather just play some games.

You say consumers are dumb, when we're talking about an industry that historically gives the finger to any hardware company that tries to fuck us or can't keep up. We immediately turned our backs on Sony, the very second they announced 599 US dollars and we're talking about a generation that grew up playing on Sony systems, just like we had with Nintendo before. wii60.com sprang up and backlash occurred over night.
599 US dollars is peanuts compared to this.
The "consumers are dumb" argument is cute and all, but doesn't in any way match the gaming industry's history not by a damn sight.
What it'll come down to, ultimately, is games. And so far, Sony is leading in that area.
Sony is leading in games by their console being game centric. For me there is a big diff in terms of appeal so far simply due to thatHow do you know this? MS is showing a ton of games tomorrow. Sony is too, but it's not like they showed anything interesting at the May reveal. Shooter, racing game, and some multiplat stuff.

I know, the point is just that Sony isn't leading on games right now because they haven't shown anything.
Hold me, Maxy
Yeah I kind of double-took at that. Sony's games are leading in what, exactly? Apathy? Mediocre sales?
To be fair, Sony has had more first party games I wanted to play over the last 3 or 4 years.

All this backlash might have spooked Sony into dropping any plans for DRM checks of their own games, but I guarantee almost every single big third-party publisher is going to have some kind of check for their games. Sony might say their system itself doesn't require online, but if all the games you want to play have it, then guess what? You have yourself an always online system.Rumors say that Sony DRM tech works offline.Disc is marked somehow.

Apparently it's even more convoluted than Xbone stuff.
People that have talked about that, have been right in lots of stuff regarding Sony and MS conferences. All this backlash might have spooked Sony into dropping any plans for DRM checks of their own games, but I guarantee almost every single big third-party publisher is going to have some kind of check for their games. B-, but A for effort.
As someone who mostly play exclusives, third-party DRM isn't that big of a deal. Games from Activision, EA, and Ubisoft might sell well, but most of them are boring as fuck. Smaller publishers aren't going to create their own DRM systems.

Agreed. But Sony did roll out games with online passes, so its not above this muck.
If it were up to the publisher, I'd say Activision would be the least dickish of the three. Activision uses standard Steamworks (no Origin or Uplay shit), doesn't use online passes, doesn't have in app purchases and free to play shit in $60 games, etc.
But things can always change.
edit:
Sony's conference will be very interesting. You know it's going to start with a montage of some sort, but what then? come out and explain the DRM plan, good or bad, to get it out of the way? that's what everyone wants to know...that and what the black box looks like. If they don't get it out of the way, the entire conference people will be preoccupied wondering about the DRM. Or if it is bad news, do they show a bunch of cool games first and save the bad news for last.
At least Microsoft aired all the DRM stank before E3. It's all uphill from here, folks! (unless it's kinect game after kinect game).
Sony's not a savior, they're not a friend, and they care as much about consumer rights as any big entertainment industry, which is to say not at all. They're a business, and they'll do whatever it takes to save their company and reach profit. If that means waiting this backlash out and telling you to go fuck yourself later on, consider yourself already told. This is a company that tried to put crazy DRM on music CDs.Not every company is out to fuck you. Plenty of companies have sustainable policies that take other factors than short-term profit into account. The used market in Japan is huge since they don't allow rentals and Sony know better than to completely block it. I'm expecting them to continue with online passes. That patent that recognizes if the disc has been used before would be perfect for removing the physical code slip in every game case. People who buy the game used and want to play the multiplayer can cough up another $10-15.
Yeah I kind of double-took at that. Sony's games are leading in what, exactly? Apathy? Mediocre sales?
Sony has better games because gamers want to cry about the xbone. This isn't that complicated. Himu has become basically the Bore's worst poster in the past couple of months.

Well-placed development sources have told Digital Foundry that the ESRAM embedded memory within the Xbox One processor is considerably more capable than Microsoft envisaged during pre-production of the console, with data throughput levels up to 88 per cent higher in the final hardware.
Bandwidth is at a premium in the Xbox One owing to the slower DDR3 memory employed in the console, which does not compare favourably to the 8GB unified pool of GDDR5 in the PlayStation 4. The 32MB of "embedded static RAM" within the Xbox One processor aims to make up the difference, and was previously thought to sustain a peak theoretical throughput of 102GB/s - useful, but still some way behind the 176GB/s found in PlayStation 4's RAM set-up. Now that close-to-final silicon is available, Microsoft has revised its own figures upwards significantly, telling developers that 192GB/s is now theoretically possible.
