This song just reminds me of college so so much. I actually bought this album while drunk because of the cover art (PRETTY EYES). Drunken intuition seldom fails though, it's really pretty decent.
Oh man, I'm really digging K-OS. I feel like I've heard him before, the sound is strangely familiar. He's like Niggy Tardust but better production and lyrics that aren't as abrasive.ya hes great, heres a couple more from him i fav'd

It turns out Dark Night Of The Soul is an album and the songs were written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, though the myriad singers featured on each track also had a big hand in composing and producing the work. The album was initially going to be packaged with a book of photos taken by David Lynch. But now there's word that the music may never be officially released at all.
An unnamed spokesperson for Danger Mouse says that "due to an ongoing dispute with EMI" the book of photographs will "now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: 'For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'" When contacted, EMI declined to comment and wouldn't confirm whether the label is even involved in the project.
In addition to Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, other artists appearing on Dark Night of the Soul include James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils.

This is a good album. Very good in fact. It's a much better effort than Octavarium and Systematic Chaos, that's for sure.
The Shattered Fortress, the final song in the Twelve-step suite is really excellent. It maintains the DT staple of having samples of their past songs included. You'll hear a riff from This Dying Soul for a split second or you'll hear the main melody of The Glass Prison in the backround. Really great stuff.
But the best song on the album is the epic finale, The Count of Tuscany. It's kind of cliche to pick the final epic 20 minute song as the best but this song really earns it. This is classic Dream Theater prog-metal that has been lacking in some of the most recent affairs. The final 4 minutes or so are fucking perfect.
My only real complaint I can say are the weird "tough dude" vocals that are mixed in. If you've heard A Nightmare to Remember you may notice the part about 3/4s of a way through where the dude sings "DAY AFTER DAY, AND NIGHT AFTER NIGHT..." it's really cheesy and I'm not a fan of it.

I can't believe i never cared for this song, never gave it chance (always stopped at "Hello Earth"). It goes completely in a different direction sound wise, I love it.
The monster paintings on Rhodes' albums often cause viewers to do a double-take, and sometimes give the wrong impression of the music contained within. As Rhodes explains (the following used with kind permission of Happy Rhodes):
“ My father was a painter among other things. I was the only child in the family who displayed artistic talent, so my dad would always coach me. He'd say things like, "Don't henscratch. Just put your pencil to the paper and keep continuous lines as if you KNOW what you're drawing." He also said that nothing I create could be bad; that anything that comes from my imagination can only be good. I loved that because it gave me permission to draw from my imagination. I liked drawing monsters because it served two purposes. It repelled others, which was always a good thing for me, and it allowed me the freedom of not having to study anatomy. I enjoy anatomy very much, but it's so nice to be able to paint something without worrying about correct proportions. I realized at some point that I painted monsters to be my friends and protectors. They were always kind souls who would rip to shreds anyone who tried to hurt me.
I sketched monsters throughout my adolescence, then when I was 14 I convinced my mother to let me paint a monster mural on my bedroom wall. It was about 7 feet tall, had horns, one leg ripped off, demonic eyes and taloned hands with twisted fingers. Oh - and long pointy teeth of course. The monster on my bedroom wall was named, "Alice." It was male not female. My brothers' friends would always ask to come in to see it. Later in my teens I started painting monsters on canvas. I was never a good painter but it was a great hobby for me at the time. I painted a monster on the saddlebag of a motorcycle. I took a picture of it and it became the album cover for Rhodes I.
I continued painting monsters all over my room-some original and some from Dungeons and Dragons. When my mother sold the house a year later, I had to paint over every single one of them. I used two coats of primer and two coats of paint and Alice still kept bleeding through. Someday some poor little kid is going to wake up in the room and see the faint outline of a horrible creature staring at it.
isn't their black singer dude a homo?
He has been reluctant to discuss his sexuality, though he has compared himself to famous bisexuals Brian Molko and David Bowie, as well as Morrissey.[7] He also discussed the homoerotic story behind his song "I Still Remember" and the semi-autobiographical nature of it, explaining that he no longer feels a need to remain tight-lipped about his sexuality. Okereke did not explicitly define himself as being either gay or bisexual. [7]

Sleepers sleep as we row the boat,
Just you the weather and I gave up hope.
But all of the hurdles that fell in our laps
Were fuel for the fire and straw for our backs.
Still the voices have stories to tell,
Of the power struggles in heaven and hell,
But we feel secure against such mighty dreams,
As Orpheus sings of the promise tomorrow may bring.

This album sucks dick save for MK Ultra. It seems like they totally lost their flair, and somehow the lyrics are even more distractingly bad than usual :lol Disappointing, but then I wasn't expecting much after Black Holes anyway

I agree with OptimoPeach. New Muse album fucking blows. I really like MK Ultra and Unnatural Selection isn't too bad either (although I prefer it live). But that's about it. Resistance sounds promising until that godawful chorus, holy shit. The album just annoys me more than anything.

Speaking of which, what's some good prog rock. I have Court of the Crimson King, which is good but most of the songs are extended for little to no reason imo. I want something ambitious, pretentious, epic etc...but at the same time reserved enough not to put me to fucking sleep with three minutes of bird chirping, guitar feed back, random drumming, or wind recordings

Gardot was cycling in Philadelphia in November 2003[6] when she was hit by a Cherokee Jeep that ignored a red traffic light. In the accident she suffered serious head injuries. Her pelvis was shattered in two places and spinal injuries meant she was in hospital on her back for a year. She had to re-learn how to do simple things such as brushing her teeth and walking and to this day she needs a cane to walk and, when performing, she sits on a special chair (or stands). Besides that, she also became sensitive to both light and sound and has to wear dark glasses.[4] The accident also resulted in both long and short term memory problems and difficulty with her sense of time. Gardot has described coping with this as like 'climbing Mount Everest every day' as she often wakes with no memory of what she has to do that day. She relies on her supporting musicians to help her remember the songs she has to perform and often has to re-learn them with long rehearsals.[7]
(http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XdK3N5HRL._SL500_AA240_.jpg)Yeah, I've had this in heavy rotation since I got it. It's funny how Mascis'(s?) voice improved so much with age.
Good stuff.

I want to get more into rock and heavy metal. I know hip hop, jazz, r&b quite well most of the music I listen to these days is electronic, so I've got plenty of that.
Listening to the Beatles albums for the first time has reminded me how much little exposure I have to rock. Suggestions would excellent. For heavy metal, I don't know where to start, but I'm fond of 80's hair metal and Metallica.
I'm giving the following artists a shot:

- Nine Inch Nails
- Rolling Stones
- Led Zeppelin
- Genesis
- Aerosmith
- Blood Sweat and Tears
- The Decemberists
- Journey
- Blondie

Don't see what's so great about it at all. I think I'll go back to listening to Pink Floyd and Beatles. The album just sounds incredibly generic and boring as far as debuts go, and compared to other 1994 rock albums like The Bends it's average.
Not liking the first two Weezer albums = having a heart of stone
I completely understand not liking everything AFTER those two, but come on
Just go in order. Station to Station is only 6 or 7 songs anyway.
Low is amazing, though
I never realized Placebo was influenced by Bowie? ???
Damn. No wonder I like Bowie so much. I heart Placebo.
well, I meant the bulk of their albums. I haven't heard their latest album because I thought Meds sucked.
The instrumental tracks don't even sound like they belong in the 70's. Even Kraftwerk's electronic music sounds like it belongs in the 70's, but Bowie's stuff in Low sounds straight from the 80's. Holy CRAP.You should check out Eno's solo stuff sometime, especially Another Green World. It's in the same vein

1 year later and I'm still listening to M83's Youth album and Graveyard Girl had kind of become my defacto driving to work song. It's the first one on my main playlist in my car and I'm too lazy to change it so I fucking hear it almost everyday. Thankfully, it's still awesome.
You might be digesting things too quickly. Are you giving things more than initial impressions of 1-2 listens? I didn't like everything on Let It Bleed at first. On the other hand I loved Night At the Opera the first time I heard it. It really covers so many areas of rock
himu, you might like a group called Television. They only had one good album, but it's pretty damn good. It might be that shorter version of London Calling you're looking for. It's called Marquee Moon. Avoid the other album at all costs...That's actually freeleech on What.CD. Or it was a week ago anyway, I don't know now.

What the hell? Adventure isn't bad at all.
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
I like The Decemberists but I don't get this comparison. Then again, I haven't heard their last album if that's what you're referring to in specific.King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
If you like this, check out The Decemberists. I wasn't hip to them until recently, and I'm sure there a lot more knowledgeable fans on their discography that could give you a more specific recommendation.
[img]http://i36.tinypic.com/28hluti.png[img]You have to seed literally everything you've downloaded. Even when I was doing that when I first got on there I don't think I was getting more than 40-50 MB upload a day from the 80 or so albums I was seeding 24/7, and I'm sure it's only worse now that the amount of users has tripled. Just keep on downloading (and seeding everything) and don't worry about your ratio until you start getting close to 5GB. There's a grace period for a reason.
???
Alright, confession time: I haven't listened to Pearl Jam since I was about 10 or 11 years old. I'll have to go through their discography. Now is probably a good time since I've been doing a bit of a 90s alt-rock refresher lately; today I've listened to enough of The Smashing Pumpkins to make Diablo's vagina wet. Anyway, are there any big stinkers I should avoid? Not really. No Code was just okay, and Yield needs some more goddamn respect.

it's been a few years, but I remember it not having any of the energy of marquee moon...
Seeding is almost impossible. But I used the Beatles Remasters in FLAC to get my ratio up so fucking high that I don't have to worry about it for a longggggg time.
60s for me. The 70s were cool but goddamn was a lame decade for fashion and pop culture. Disco :yuck

In my early teens I was all into rap. :lol I remember all the white kids wearing Pink Floyd t-shirts. "What the fuck is that? A brand name?" ??? "Why would a guy wear a shirt with something that said pink on it?" ???

which is funny because a lot of us who grew up on Nirvana, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, NIN (closer/downward spiral), etc. ended up moving on to rap around senior year/college :lol

I guess I'ma have to try that Flaming Lips album again. I really didn't like At War with the Mystics and I wasn't really feeling this new one when I was listening to it on Colbert's site.
There's plenty I still haven't heard this year, like the "new" Philip Glass.

But the Pitchfork review isn't up yet!
For me, AOTY is between Merriweather Post Pavilion, It's Blitz!, No More Stories, Embryonic, Farm, and Hospice, leaning heavily toward MPP (suck it, haters/Willco). Honorable mentions to the new Cymbals Eat Guitars album and Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
alright, hold the fuck up...I just got to Aquarius Sabotage on this Flaming Lips album...how did I miss this the first time? :o This song kicks ass
Also, The xx's "xx" is really fantastic, and Jason Lytle's new album "Yours Truly, the Commuter", which is as if Grandaddy were still together and never started to suck.

I offered to buy the CD straight out but she said it wasn't available. *sigh*
Anyway, I can't find this song ANYWHERE online. Anyone have any suggestions or maybe one of you guys already have it....if so let's swap.

I like a couple of songs on this, but I wasn't impressed overall. I don't think it's my type of rock: too loud, not melodic enough, over emphasis on electric without making me want to jam to it, noisy for the sake of noise.
I don't like grunge.

While I don't think Loaded is nearly as good as Velvet Underground and Nico, it's still pretty great. I really have much to say about it aside from the fact it has gotten lots of rotation on my zune this past week alongside VU and N.
I wasn't a fan either, mr. cooksYou misspelled The Soft Bulletin
Just listen to Yoshimi instead
Those other two Lou Reed-fronted VU albums are definitely worth getting into as well.
Have any of you listened to Zaireeka properly? If so, how the hell did you do it and is it worth the effort or would I be just as well off downloading a "compiled" version? I've always considered a sort of novelty recording and ignored it, but the Fearless Freaks documentary got me interested in checking it out.
The Boom Box Experiments
After completion of Zaireeka, The Flaming Lips tried an unconventional method to tour the album. "The Boom Box Experiments", like "The Parking Lot Experiments", involved tapes being played at the same time. However, these shows were held in conventional rock venues, and the band supplied their own boom boxes. Coyne and Drozd conducted two "choirs" of people controlling the boom boxes, giving them instructions for actions like turning the volume up or down, while Ivins controlled the mixer.[13]
Songs played in The Boom Box Experiments include:
* "The Big Ol' Bug Is the New Baby Now"
* "A Winter's Day Car Accident Melody"
* "Altruism, or That's the Crotch Calling the Devil Black"
* "Heralding in a Better Ego"
* "Realizing the Speed of Life"
* "Schizophrenic Sunrise, or The Loudest Blade of Grass"[14]
would I be just as well off downloading a "compiled" version? This is allegedly underwhelming and shitty
Jesus, distant, I am jealous as hell. :bow

Why does everyone like Rubber Soul, I never got it. It's always striked me as their most boring album, tied with Let it Be.Drive My Car is a fun Paul tune.
Listening to the Rubber Soul remaster now. OMG, this is fucking awesome. :hyper
I should get the White Album remaster and listen to that one. :-*

More existential awesomeness from the flaming lips 8)
I've given the Flaming Lips album five tries and nothing clicks for me. Yoshimi/Soft Bulletin this ain't. Some people like that fact, I on the other hand prefer those. By a lot.I thought you said you were liking it on your second listen? Anyway, it's clearly not in the same vein as their last few releases, but after At War with the Mystics I don't think that's a bad thing. They're pretty good at recognizing when they need to move on. And whoever mentioned the Christmas on Mars soundtrack is totally on point; that album really helps to bridge the gap.
You better be buying the PS3 version unless you have a US 360. RB2 is region locked. For some reason Beatles: RB is not. WTF? ???

The Flaming Lips have already recorded a follow-up to “Embryonic.” The band will release a track-by-track interpretation of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in the near future, which it recorded with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, a band that features Coyne’s nephew Dennis.
Henry Rollins and Peaches make guest appearances on the album, Coyne told the crowd during a pre-concert question-and-answer session. A Flaming Lips spokesman says the album will likely be an iTunes-only release, at least initially.
“Embryonic” was the last album the Flaming Lips had due to Warner Bros., which the band has been working with since the early ‘90s. Now in their 26th year, Coyne says the band isn’t looking to go it alone, and likely won’t be following the path of a Radiohead or a Nine Inch Nails. While the structure of the deal may change, the Flaming Lips, Coyne says, have already decided to stick with Warner Bros.
“We don’t really want money that we haven’t earned,” Coyne said. “We’re lucky that we’re able to earn lots of money. A lot of bands and artists aren’t as lucky as we are. But we would never at this point to just be businessmen and say, ‘We want this much money or else.’ We want to earn it. Bands and entertainers make stupid money as it is.
“It was never the big corporate label trying to change the weirdos from Oklahoma,” he continues. “They made it possible we could be who we are. I will always owe them. That’s the secret no one really ever cares about. We owe Warner Bros. for our whole way of being.”
In other Flaming Lips news, they've already recorded a follow-up, sort of.Quote from: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2009/10/flaming-lips-bring-embyronics-rock-n-roll-edge-to-hollywood.htmlThe Flaming Lips have already recorded a follow-up to “Embryonic.” The band will release a track-by-track interpretation of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in the near future, which it recorded with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs, a band that features Coyne’s nephew Dennis.

I'm assuming the bolded part only applies to other successful major label acts.
SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE TONIGHT. FIRST TIME ALL FOUR ORIGINAL MEMBERS HAVE PLAYED IN SEATTLE IN 15 YEARS.Wow, I didn't even know they were doing a reunion :lol I'd act more surprised, but I'm way out of the loop. So how was it? And are they just doing one tour, or is there the possibility of new material as well?

Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers owns, Exile on Main Street is good but too long.
I've never exactly been a fan of BEP, so I was unaware that they were partially formed from another group.

Exile is long, but it has little to no filler. Like most double LP's, it's easier to get into if you split it up and don't try to listen to it all in one sitting.
Yeah, it's fun to think what could have been had his label not dropped them after he died. Wikipedia isn't too clear on the specifics, but was it ever detailed why this album was never released?I've never exactly been a fan of BEP, so I was unaware that they were partially formed from another group.

And I mean, dude, not respecting the audience is pretty common these days, I've encountered. Most audiences are fucking awful, I know I wouldn't.What a bunch of crap. These are people that A) are actually aware of your obscure little band's existence and B) care enough to pay to see a performance from you; that's reason enough to at least pretend like you give a shit. I like Islands a lot, but come on now.
-They were all drinking beer. This is just a personal pet peeve of mine, but I feel it's unprofessional for bands to be drinking beer onstage between songs, especially if they're playing sloppy. Just goes to the whole lack of respect for the audience thing.

whhhhhat? :lol I'm sorry, was this your first smaller-scale show? Drinking beer on the house is one of the few benefits these bar bands get. It also helps the stage fright.

Like I said it's a personal pet peeve. I go to a handful of shows (almost all small) each year and the bands are always drinking water between songs. I just find beer drinking on-stage to be kind of ...unrefined? Something I'd expect from a metal band, but not an indie band. And like I said I wouldn't care so much if the playing hadn't been a bit sloppy. Because then it comes across as the band is just drinking and fucking around and don't care about putting on a good show for the audience.
It's kind of like how I don't listen to cute girl music if they use the f* word and curse. I feel profanity is harsh/ugly and is the exact opposite of cute.

yeah, I had Bocmaxima, Twoism, and something unlabeled back in the day...gonna dl em again right now in fact. I remember it being a little more retro synthy, but a little less interestingly produced. I like the Fall Be Kind EP a lot, but the flute in Graze seriously kills the song for me. Like, what the fuck is that doing there. I Think I Can and What Would I Want? Sky are both excellent though, and the rest is pretty solid.I changed my mind on this. The 2 songs I listed are excellent, but everything else is forgettable. The first track would be good if not for the last 2 minutes with that embarrassingly gaudy pan flute bit (Pitchfork described it as a "radical hobbit dance jam" or some stupid shit). So yeah, as far as their EPs go, Water Curses takes a big fat poo on this.
edit: Not sure how I'd rank it among their other releases, I need a few more listens for it to digest

I wonder if AC will ever manage a record that comes close to Person Pitch. Probably not.

In Strict Confidence sounds pretty good, Chandeen would have been better with no vocals.

MGMT gets mentioned a few times for an album that's over two years old (including a Best New Artist nom), which is nice, I guess.
But when Kenny G decided that it was appropriate for him to defile the music of the man who is probably the greatest jazz musician that has ever lived by spewing his lame-ass, jive, pseudo bluesy, out-of-tune, noodling, wimped out, fucked up playing all over one of the great Louis's tracks (even one of his lesser ones), he did something that I would not have imagined possible. He, in one move, through his unbelievably pretentious and calloused musical decision to embark on this most cynical of musical paths, shit all over the graves of all the musicians past and present who have risked their lives by going out there on the road for years and years developing their own music inspired by the standards of grace that Louis Armstrong brought to every single note he played over an amazing lifetime as a musician. By disrespecting Louis, his legacy and by default, everyone who has ever tried to do something positive with improvised music and what it can be, Kenny G has created a new low point in modern culture - something that we all should be totally embarrassed about - and afraid of. We ignore this, "let it slide", at our own peril.
That album is really fantastic, BlueTsunami.

It's like a shitty fusion of the most annoying and indulgent elements of MGMT and MPP-style Animal Collective. Both groups sorta test my tolerance for puerility in vocals and style, but this is too much for me. What really sucks is when I heard the first track I was like, "Oh shit, this is all eerie and dark and awesome, this is going to be great," and then all auspiciousness proved wrong as soon as it went 1000 miles in the opposite fucking direction with Ambling Alp.
I think it'd be cool if the pursued the sound they have going on the slower, moodier stuff (The Children, Strange Reunions), but I don't like their brand of upbeat hipster pop. Even worse, the radical change in direction makes it seem like they're just trend-hopping.
I dunno. I kinda have a proclivity for capriciousness when it comes to music, so maybe I'll be gushing about it 2 weeks from now, but somehow I doubt it. Huge disappointment for me :'(

Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker, Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter, flugelhorn player and singer.
Specializing in relaxed, even melancholy music, Baker rose to prominence as a leading name in cool jazz in the 1950s. Baker's good looks and smoldering, intimate singing voice established him as a promising name in pop music as well. But his success was badly hampered by drug addiction, particularly in the 1960s, when he was imprisoned.
He died in 1988 after falling from a hotel window in Amsterdam, Netherlands.[2]

What exactly is the appeal of this sort of thing? Not trying to be offensive with that question.
Dorky personal trivia: I was totally into black metal and industrial stuff at the time, personally involved in the Scandinavian thing, and picked that one up purely because the name of the compilation it appeared on, Trancesylvania 1. :-[ Totally changed my life, although it admittedly appealed to the old synth fan inside. Our experience with canadians boiled down to watching "Strange Brew" so I though he said, "You guys want some, eh?"
I said, "want some what?"
"A... want some A?

"Want some what?"
This goes on for a minute or so and finally he says "Acid".

These fuckers have really pocketed this stuff for themselves, and even my own stuff has at least once as such purely because of association. And I got invited to play at some damned nazi gathering in Italy. FFFFUUUUUUU
Basically, I'm trying to listen to The Grey Wolves, but I'm having a hard time getting past the image right now.
Something about tripping in a foreign country, getting back to the hotel safely after, etc. etc....he says "Acid".

Do any of you guys run into people who boldly claim that music out of the last decade sucked? What the fuck are those people on? Sure, radio hits and pop songs were bad, but they've always been bad. Everything else has been anywhere from pants-shittingly amazing to mind-blowingly orgasmic.
Eh I dunno man. There's been a lot of great hip hop this last decade imo, you just have to look for it.
Hip-hop has NOT been that great this last decade though. I mean, good hip-hop.
Snore.
2000's belonged to Kanye West. Brought that backpacker bs to the mainstream now we have Wale :yuck
bullshit. Kanye most influential Hip-Hop artist of the last decade.
Like PD said he moved mainstream Hip-Hop away from gangsta bs.
I 100% disagree with you, and I've heard this argument way too many times.

The new Titus Andronicus album is "Out."
It's fucking incredible. RoboJ, please tell me you've listened to it.
Puerto Rico Flowers- 4. This is the sound of a million Goth dance floors at 5 AM after it has wound down and only the faithful and jobless are still out and about. Joy Division dirges at Mozart’s Requiem speeds. The vocal inflection is a really good affectation of the whole Deathrock vocal style before it melted back into horrific trance music and pretended it was EBM. The four songs read like a typical night out, Not My Idea to Let’s Make Friends to Torture to This is Murder. There is talk of a dark music revival in “hip” culture, and will probably find an audience of people who are interested in that. $8 from Fan Death Records.
Man, the "Italians Do It Better" label is fucking great. They've got The Chromatics, Glass Candy and now Desire...

Each one of them are unique sounding but with a disco influence. Song progressions are usually affective and the vocalists (which in this case is also the vocalist from The Chromatics) work very well with the sound.
Also, from following a recommendation on iTunes (on the Desire - II page)...

is that a new Tribe album, PD?
is that a new Tribe album, PD?
Nah it's their fourth album from 1996. It's darker than their previous albums; a product of the times really, given the west coast/east coast "war" that was going on. Production wise it's a mixture of their traditional jazzy vibe with J Dilla's harder drums/bass, neo soul
From what I've read it wasn't as well received as their previous albums, which is kinda understandable considering those three albums are classic. It's very solid and features some fierce rhyming though; seems like Tip and Phife felt the need to prove themselves, given the attacks leveled against them by more aggressive rappers like Tupac. I guess my biggest complaint is that there are a lot of tracks where Tip or Phife are solo; sure those tracks are still great, but I just love hearing them going back and forth together.
NIGHTFALL!!! :D it's an old radio play that was on the CBC in the early 80s. Started in 80 and ended in 83. Damn good radio play. Highly recommend it to anyone who like horror radio plays. I was able to obtain most of the episodes from 80 to 83. I know I'm missing a few, but I've got a lot of em.

I was watching Adult Swim before I left to work this morning and they had a UK Office bump with a track that I really liked. Not knowing what the hell it was called, I left a message over on the AdultSwim boards asking what it was. Well, I got an answer from the admin that it was called "Ulterior Motif" and couldn't be purchased or downloaded by the public but could be listened to in its entirety at extrememusic.com
Can't be downloaded? We'll see about that! I tried all my ripping programs but nothing seemed compatible with extrememusic.com but I KNOW there has to be some kind of work around to this.....there always is. Maybe someone here might be able to help a brother out. Anyone?

Awesome! Thanks man, I really appreciate it. :-*
Songs as simple as a knife and just as deadly. Typically when you listen to electronic music, it’s generally very clean and clear and the production is straightforward. Let the music do the work or at the very least, let the production not get in the way of the audience and the music.
For Black Bug, channeling early Shawn Foree, on their full length self-titled album just released on FDH records, there is a rejection of the clean and clear and an embrace of distortion, grit as saw toothed synths tear lines through the synapses of your brain across eighteen tracks. Sharp and hard-edged, these are the songs that get stuck in the heads of schizophrenic murderers as they go about their days culling the life from their victims.
This is the sound of a youth spent listening to equal parts Waxtrax and Dischord Records reawakening the best elements of both. Short snappy songs, brutal distorted bass; nearly nonsensical words shouted or spoken more than sung and beats that inspire your tired body to dance on broken glass with no regard for anything as naive as a “future.”
In these songs is a casual threat, a menacing smirk and a wild swagger that reprograms your thoughts rearranging them to jump cuts, distorting your expectations transforming you from simple cow to lean, hungry predator hunting down previous, hard to find 7” releases from this amazing and unique group. FDH Records has the amazing and indispensable 12” release now for $11; limited to 500 pieces. They also have an MP3 of “Beating your Heart out“, or you can check out Black Bug’s MySpace page for songs not on the album as they have JUST released a new 7” Television Screen. My own copy hasn’t come in yet, but if it’s anywhere as good as Life is a Whore and this Self-Titled release, it will be something you cannot miss.

It's already been established that Bob Dylan is responsible for every song ever written, good or bad. Just look at that link BrandNew posted; "Congratulation" uses the melody of "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" as the bass line.

There are no more interesting rock and roll bands, you know, there are opiate-addicted white boys who cannot play very well and who are unwilling to turn down the amplifiers so as to be heard, and there are machines and auto-tuned fembots, and there are hip hoppers with public-relations simulated gangster simulations, and there are working-class guys with a lot of tattoos who can play really, really fast. But there are no more interesting rock and roll bands, and there are no longer songs that make you want to get out of bed. Still, The New Pornographers are unable not to behave like underdogs of yearning, like a united front of yearning, and they are also unable, it seems, to resist the challenge to make a perfect album, a form so dead that it is on its seventh wave of maggotry, and so they have an eye on history, and they do love a windmill, they love to charge, and they do not know how to do otherwise now, which means that theirs is a contagious form of yearning, and if in part their longing is postmodern, which is to say that they often writes songs that are about other songs (“Crash Years,” e.g., is about “You” by George Harrison, and “Moves” is, in part, about “25 or 6 to 4,” by the beleaguered Chicago), they are not able to treat the form simply as a kind of commentary (which has caused others fatefully to go awry), but also as a surgical intervention for puncture-wounded civilians everywhere, as a joy delivery-system, and in this joy-delivery system there are new and interesting twists, for those who are curious about what the ineradicable contemporary moment sounds like, sound-wise, and the twists on this new album, have to do with strings, really, and with a sort of chamber pop orientation, lots of cello, that is, of a sort that calls to mind the amazing Sister Lovers LP by Big Star, around whose open wounds A. C. Newman has orbited in the past but more fearfully than now.

Although, I suppose there's plenty of space to extend Metanoia and Siberian Breaks to 20+ minutes each.
Has anyone seen MGMT live? They're playing at Merriweather Post Pavilion (they're big enough for that?!) in August and I was thinking of buying tickets if I can snag some for the floor, but I keep reading that their live show is really bad. :(They were just on SNL this past Saturday.
I like the new stuff enough to not particularly care if they don't play the "hits", but I don't think they have enough material to be sticking to it exclusively. Although, I suppose there's plenty of space to extend Metanoia and Siberian Breaks to 20+ minutes each.

I guess I just don't really understand what "bad" is live anymore. I saw Titus Andronicus in a shitty record store a couple weeks back and they were technically terrible, but it fits their direction so well that it was awesome.

From the opening guitar feedback to the militaristic, yet primal drums and crushing, fuzzed-out bass, "Landlord" makes it known that Twin Stumps' brand of sophisticated and misanthropic noise rock has reached new heights. This plodding opener is the both the band's death march and introduction to what is a defining moment for the band, as well as a landmark release for Fan Death Records, Seedbed.
I know the band struggled to find a recording quality that fit with their sound, but they've found it with Ben Greenberg of Pygmy Shrews, who does an incredible job here. His job on their 12" on Dais, while excellent, was lacking in low-end. Things are evened out a little more on this release with the addition of a more prominent bass tone that is both heavy and filthy, all without sacrificing the piercing guitar tones.
Not only has Greenberg helped the band find their recording potential that was hinted at with the 12", but the band's songwriting has excelled, as well, and I can finally say that there is a definitive recording of my live favorite of theirs, "Missing Persons." Along with that song, "Landlords," "Lungs," and "Lust Murder" are among some of the choice cuts on this album, which, to date, is definitely their best material. Seedbed is recorded beautifully, written confidently, conceptualized and paced masterfully, and executed soundly.
This is the band and label-approved "leak" of the album, so be sure to pick up your copy of this LP from Fan Death. Trust me, you will want to, as Seedbed stands as the strongest release thus far for the Fan Death camp and, if there's any justice in this world, it will position Twin Stumps in the upper echelon of contemporary noise rock.
Production is tight, Nas sounds better than he's sounded since Stillmatic, and while I don't always know what Marley is saying...dude is awesomesmh :lol

From that pic it looks like you're all set. Because the seeder:leecher ratio on private trackers is generally pretty disproportionate, you're not going to see stuff being uploaded constantly. Just gotta be patient lol.
Fortunately, so long as you seed everything you download it's pretty difficult to get your account closed with the new-ish ratio requirements (http://what.cd/rules.php?p=ratio)
Naw your required ratio depends on how many of your downloads you are still seeding, not how many you've seeded back to 1.00. There's a more in-depth explanation at the above link, but the basic idea is to seed as many of your downloads as you can for at least 72 hours per week. If you do that then you don't even have any ratio requirement whatsoever until you hit 20gb downloaded, and then the requirement begins to increase marginally from 0.05.From that pic it looks like you're all set. The problem is that it takes forever to seed anything. The minimum for each torrent is a ratio of 1.00 right?

Is that "The Egg" as in Walking Away, the song which was ripped off by Guetta for his song "Love Don't Let Me Go"?
That's a pretty terrible tracklist besides the Black Keys and the Bat for Lashes stuff. The Dead Weather man.
Why are these guys being a part of a shit movie?
The new Reflection Eternal album is a new poster boy for why credible "underground" hip hop artists should get the hell away from big record labels and just go independent. Warner Bros delayed the album for months, waiting for an acceptable single. The result is basically an album of failed "for the ladies" songs and weak production. The entire album is bland.
Talib Kweli has never fallen off lyrically, but the subject matter feels tired here and there really aren't any amazing lines to be found here. On the other hand, it sounds like Hi-Tek has fallen off completely. As I said earlier, the first RE album was a wonderful marriage of great lyricism/rhyming and some hard ass beats...

Sure it also was a mixture of neo-soul production, but it was always groovy. Back Again sounds is a good throwback to that sound, but for the most part the album is a a collection of light drums and boring samples with no energy or groove. The rapping isn't much more inspired. J Cole and Jay Electronica shine on the posse track Just Begun, and Talib drops a great verse as well; on the other hand Mos Def drops a pretty weak verse, his only on the album. Speaking of which, can a posse track even be a posse track if the beat is a weak as Just Begun's?
Utter disappointment. After this I'm not sure I want a new Black Star album. And in terms of Warner Bros, this makes me even more wary of what they do with Blu, one of my favorite "new" rappers and their recent signee.

I love Cab Calloway and this video is not only an awesome song, but a great case study for animation. This is excellent. I'm reminded of some of the appropriated animation sequences in The Forbidden Zone.

She's crazy cute, and that music is great. Thanks for the tip-off!Those vids are more stripped down than the album versions. I like 'em better, but I haven't found out where they're from yet. :\ Her second album is cool too, although it carries more of a kick and feels more like a band than her having a backing band.
Edit: just picked up her first album on Amazon. Danke!
Been listening to We Are The Fallen today. My cousin got it. Sounds a lot like Evanescence (and it should considering 3 of its members were also originally in that band)So shit?
Just picked up the Sleigh Bells album. Getting hyped like a motherfucker. This shit is off all the chains. :heart
Yeah, I was a little bewildered when they shook beach girls and ring ring into kids and rill rill. And it's kinda weird going back to the older versions now, they seem duller, but there is still something missing from the album versions. :\Just picked up the Sleigh Bells album. Getting hyped like a motherfucker. This shit is off all the chains. :heart
I like the new Sleigh Bells but I was kind of hoping for some more songs that were similar to Ring Ring.
What's even more curious, if you study of music trends in general, is that we went from a pretty skeptical/cynical music to vapid pop in just a few years time in the 90's. How do you go from Nirvana to Britney Spears? None of it makes sense!
Did someone just say Dio is not a good singer? Bad that man asap
Queensryche < *
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpBY9Odeiu8
What you'll find is that a lot of times, if a trend is pushed too far, and a backlash occurs, the thing to fill it is generally a stylistic opposite of what was popular before... Hence, 80's hair metal excess -> grunge -> boybands, etc.So an acoustic revolution would be next....

audio quality sounds fucking horrible in the song I heard from that album. :-\
Yeah, me too. Good stuff, solidly in the nu-metal vein but Amy's vocals were always a bit borderline. I'll look into "We Are The Fallen."Been listening to We Are The Fallen today. My cousin got it. Cause wow that shit's beachy, I love it.
Finally got around to listening to the remastered Exile On Main St last night. Was only gonna listen to a couple songs since it was like 4:10am, but I wound up listening to the entire album (didn't listen to the unreleased tracks). Sounds amazing. I forgot how good the album is
Like I said, fully. Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers have tracks that I like, even love, but as far as album experiences go, eh.
I've never really been a Stones fan, though, and I get a load of shit for it in Nashville.
Just heard Pursuit of Happiness by Kid Cudi and realized there's a shit-ton of contemporary hip hop I've been missing out on while searching for some classics from the 80s and 90s, anybody wanna hook it up with a run down of the hottest shit from the last decade? I have quite a bit already but I'm open to suggestions.

You've fallen off. you're at the top.
At the top of the shit list.

But for all the big talk, it ain't that personal, baby.
We're doing our job here, just doing our job.
I'm doing my job sir.
Said the spider to the fly:
"you will miss me when I'm gone.
You will miss my hateful song.
You will miss me when I'm gone.
You will miss my threatening tone."
We're doing our job here, just doing our job.
I'm doing my job, sir.
It's the chase and not the catch,
It's the threatening of blood from stone.
Ring. ring. ring ring ring ring...
We're killing the landline.
We're breaking the bloodline.
Breaking the bank.
Ring. ring. ring ring ring - "it's the bank"
Too bad that fucker is more interested in dressing in fly BAPE gear than making another classic album.
I love THAT song but the rest of that album, not so much.
Heh, you sure that's DJ Shadow or his UNKLE production partner James Lavelle?

(http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm217/ch1nchilla/33085883163953555697.jpg)I love this mixtape! :elephant
Opening act Telephoned is DJ/Producer Sammy Bananas and vocalist Maggie Horn playing big box house music, bringing to mind Circuit House diva tours of the 90s, where a woman would sing her lungs out over pulsing, tribal house rhythms as a DJ played instrumental versions of the songs to a room full of sweaty, shirtless white collar gays. Telephoned tapped into that experience perfectly, but the bewildered audience didn’t quite know what to do with a room full of big anthemic house at 9:30 PM.
Telephoned got their start by turning T-Pain’s “Can’t Believe It” into a house hit, and that restructuring of genres and collapsing of tracks was on display last night as cover versions of hardcore anthem Awesome 3’s “Don’t Go”, Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” and a kind of goofy dub speed version of The Cure’s “Friday I’m In Love.” Frankly, I was in love from the first minutes of the set. You can download the EXCELLENT mixtape Off The Hook here and if you get the chance, see them live. It’s a lot of fun, and you can play “What’s that sample” if you’re not too busy dancing your ass off.

Kitschy, socially conscious singer and songwriter Janelle Monae has all the tools for a successful debut music career--interesting and dynamic production, a melodic singing voice, an interesting look, a new dance--and one of hip-hop's heavy hitters (Big Boi, of Outkast fame) as her mentor and co-collaborator. So why hasn't her new single torn up the airwaves? Is it because the world isn't ready for Monae's tuxedoed swagger and retro-meets-R&B supersonic sound? Or is it the music industry's stubborn adherence to narrowly defined genres, coupled with monopolization of the airwaves?
Awesome album! Helps me stay psyched to do the chores around the house.

Who are you talking to? Keep your GAF posts over there please.and Joanna Newsom:bow
Em has always been pop horrorcore rap, but it sounds more ridiculous now that I'm grown. Also, patting him on the back because he can outrap Soulja Boy, Young Jeezy, and Gucci Mane is not what I call high praise. At one time Eminem was a better rapper than Jay-Z, Nas, DMX, and every other mainstream rapper - and he was better than underground rappers too. Now, eh. Is he better than Jay-Z in 2010? Yea...but who cares. He's not the same rapper.

Kanye is good, but he's an average rapper. Flow wise and lyrically he's not as good as Em and probably never will be cause he's always a bit sing-songy, although never as often and bad as Drake. Stop trolling. You can't say he was better then the best when they were at their best then turn around and compare Kanye to him.
TODAY Kanye is a better rapper.Recovery proves this wrong. I'm sure you made your final judgment on it after only one listen, right?
Janelle's albums is hot, Christina's is not. Haven't listened to Kelis' but I liked Acapella, which is a good sign.

After self-recording and releasing a 5-song, 11-minute EP in late 2008, Rebels Eat Apples returns with their debut full-length. The album was recorded in 5 days by Matt Saporito, Bo Moore, and J Mendicino. With J as producer the raw tracks achieved unusually gorgeous fidelity. The tracks were subsequently denatured and abused by Matt in the mixing process to achieve the desired result--29 minutes of thrash. Artwork and liner notes included with the download. Released November 30, 2009. For more, see Rebels Eat Apples @ MySpace.

the production is crazy for the most part. pretty good album, and I'm not really into southern rapAgreed. I like most albums as long as they have good production. Good to see that you actually like it. :D
You guys go on about the production but for me it's just good to hear somebody who seems to put effort in his rap.True, but if you do that alone and have shit/boring production, I won't listen to your music.

And after he finished his set by jumping into the crowd, I even got to ask him a quick question (before pretty much peeing in my pants) about when we'll ever get to hear a full version of "The Ghost of Christopher Wallace." His answer: "In about a month." That means new Jay music! Maybe even an album someday? We'll see.
Sounds like Lupe's label is dicking him around, he might not release anything. I'd love to see him go independent; he certainly has the fanbase to do so.Man I've been looking forward to Lasers since it was LupEND. fml if that ends up being the case.

Looking at that Sir Luscious Left Foot track list now. Why isn't Andre 3000 on any of this? Some stupid beef I didn't hear about, or is it just more record label gayness? I'm gonna download it either way, but I'm curious
This morning, the tracklist for the final version of Sir Luscious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty hit the internet, and none of the songs you’ve recorded with Dré are on there. No “Royal Flush,” and no “Lookin For Ya.” What gives?
Well, basically it boils down to Jive Records. That’s how they do it. Jive Records told me my album is a piece of art, and they didn’t know what to do with it. So I moved it over to Def Jam. And now Jive is trying to block Dré from being on my record. We can’t be on songs together now.
So because OutKast as a group is signed to Jive, they’re able to legally block the two of you from working together?
Au contraire! They cannot block it. Au contraire. Either they’re going to do it the right way, or they’re going to do it my way. How you wanna do it? The fans thirst will be quenched. You know, I’m no stranger to that internet, baby. So you already know what time it is. The thirst of the fans will be quenched.
“Royal Flush” with Dré and Raekwon has been out since 2008, but you’re saying we will be hearing “Lookin For Ya” [with André] even though it’s not on the album?
I guarantee it.
Wow all Jay's fans are white. I am so surprised ::)
Amy Winehouse will apparently be back in the studio soon — but this time she won't be alone. According to ?uestlove, the Roots drummer has teamed up with the troubled star to form a supergroup.http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1642945/20100702/ahmir__uestlove_thompson.jhtml
The influential hip-hop artist revealed in an interview with AOL's Spinner that the duo is indeed planning to work together. The group is "definitely going to happen," the drummer said. No name for the group has been confirmed, however, ?uesto disclosed that the singer has been in the lab with producer Salaam Remi, who worked on Winehouse's breakout album Back to Black. The drummer gushed that the resulting work is "amazing."

I'm not gonna be able to listen to this /\/\/\Y/\ album until it comes out. The rip is really, really bad. Not really liking what I'm hearing, either.
I went to a record store and scored a pair of Jimmy Smith Blue Note LPs for $20, which reinvigorated my love of the Hammond Hammer, so I'm going through and listening to his full catalog. From the weird disco shit he did, to the blues bop he did for Blue Note. Shit rules. You kids just don't even know.

freestyle is amazing but i don't know enough about it to suggest any good comps as i'm only really familiar with singles and such

Still beautiful 2 years later. Love the lyrics too.
Like a moth she moves to the red light
Her blood warms and boils there
She skims the sweat like a new milk
And pops the buttons off her wet blouse
Oh Queen of the Night!
(All of her soft parts call to me)
Well she is deep inside!
(She could be mine)
She is haunting me!
She digs her nails into her naked chest
Miles of veins fan out like a road map
She pulls back the skin to show her ribs
That twinkle like shooting stars.
Oh Queen of the Night!
(All of her soft parts call to me)
Well she is deep inside!
(She could be mine)
She is haunting me!
The 80s were so awesome for music
High Chair is an awesome track.
I love Kruder and Dorfmeister's K&D sessions so I'm happy I found this (apparently a side project from Richard Dorfmeister)...

After 16 years, Fat Beats has announced the closing of the legendary label’s two remaining retail locations in New York and Los Angeles. Fat Beats will celebrate the legacies of the stores, which are scheduled to close in early September (New York: September 4th, Los Angeles: September 18th) by throwing a series of blow-out sales and tribute parties open to the public during their last weeks. Fans can check www.FatBeats.com for updates.http://www.2dopeboyz.com/2010/08/18/r-i-p-fat-beats/

Indeed it is! I'm thinking Supertoys and Audience Pt. 2 are my favorites. Carla's singing on the chorus of Supertoys gives me goosebumps!
All in all it's a good album but not near the brilliance that was Future Perfect. I miss the little interludes between songs!

so eric, anything else out there that sounds like this?
Friend of mine went to see Rock the Bells NY and said Lauryn Hill pretty much sucked, and looked strung out or some shit :-\
Okay, so everyone advertised did perform. But it sure was a nail-biter. Lauryn Hill, the eccentric erstwhile Fugee who has mostly stayed out of sight since her lone solo album, 1998's still-scintillating R&B masterpiece "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," was clearly the lineup's chief curiosity. When it comes to her behavior over the past decade there's been no rumor too bizarre to believe. Sunday's rumor was a doozy, and it was true -- she really was three hours late to the stage because she was getting a manicure-pedicure. Suddenly, the attempt by her former band mate Wyclef Jean to become president of Haiti doesn't seem quite so self-centered.
As her 4:30 start time approached, the elaborate stage plot was ready to go. And then . . . nothing. A 10-minute wait became a half-hour, which became a full hour. Scattered heckles became heavy boos as the stage was broken down at 5:30... Her toenails apparently dry, Lauryn Hill [finally performed later], but she probably shouldn't have bothered. The performance was a messy rush through highlights from "Miseducation," but they were hardly recognizable due to her hoarse voice, speedy delivery and clunky, overstuffed arrangements. Hill wasn't lacking for energy, just focus. The feedback on her microphone was ear-splitting; special guest Nas came out for a 45-second cameo, and his microphone wasn't working for half of it. After 20 minutes she departed to an equal mix of cheers and boos, seemingly oblivious as to why anyone might be upset.
...As headliner Snoop Dogg's stage props were assembled -- that would be a large video screen and a park bench covered in 40s in brown paper bags -- and the clock began ticking toward the venue's 11 p.m. curfew, the chatter started again. As a general rule of thumb, chatter at hip-hop shows is not a good thing. Where's Snoop? He was in New York performing at a Michael Jackson tribute show earlier in the day and at 10:45 p.m. was nowhere to be seen. Boos, again.
He did finally emerge, wearing what seemed to be your grandmother's old kitchen tablecloth and performed a truncated version of his iconic gangsta rap album "Doggystyle."... He mostly stayed true to character, never smiling -- maybe he was too focused reading his lyrics off teleprompters -- but his listless performance gave off the vibe that he'd rather be somewhere else. Like, New York. Snoop drawled over the atomic G-funk of "What's My Name?" as the house lights went on -- the venue's not-so-subtle way of saying, "It's time for you to go now." It's hard to think Snoop minded too much

Fat Beats' Artist Releases Record Today...Listen Live to Streaming Performance Tonight!
With his aptly-titled new disc, Album of the Year, seeing it’s proper release today (September 14, 2010), one way to celebrate the acclaimed career of rapper Black Milk is to throw a record release party…and that’s precisely what’s going down at Brooklyn’s Southpaw venue tonight. Additionally, we’re tossing out a present to help commemorate the affair by live streaming the artist’s performance, which you can listen to on EVR.com here beginning at 8PM ET.
Tonight’s event, presented by both Black Milk & Southpaw, is being dubbed “The Official Black Milk Album Release Affair”, and it also features Sean Price, Elzhi of Slum Village, Guilty Simpson and DJ Spinna. If you can’t make it out to the spot, then listen in for all the goings on as they happen live.

So We Just Dance
So we just dance
So we just dance
So we just dance
When we say study, it means work,
When we say work, it means money,
When we say money, it means spending
When we say credit, it means debt,
When we say debt, it means bailiff,
We agree to being in deep sh*t
When we say love, it means kids,
When we say forever, it means divorce.
When we say family, we say grief, because misfortune never comes alone.
When we say crisis, we talk about the wold, famine and then third world.
When we say tiredness, we talk about waking up still deaf from sleepless night
So we just go out to forget all our problems.
So we just dance… (X9)
So you say that it’s over because the only thing worse would be death.
When you finally think you’ll make it, there’s more and more!
Ecstasy means a problem, problems or just music.
It grabs you by the guts, it takes hold of your head and then you pray for it to end.
But your body is no heaven so you block your ears even more.
And then you yell even louder and it goes on…
So we just sing
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala,
So we just sing
Lalalalalala, Lalalalalala,
So we just sing
So we just sing
And then only when it’s over, then we dance.
So we just dance (x7)
And well, there’s still more (x5)

I picked up this guy's album, Paper Tigers, a few years back. It's definitely worth checking out if you like Tessio (the song is great btw, definitely my type of music). Very similar musically, but with more of a focus on cut-up vocals.

I hear a lot of talk about shoegaze, what exactly is it?
Actually saw the Deprecation Guild at a chiptunes show a few years back, they weren't too bad but far from my favorite act of the night.
Wall of Sound, essentially. Listen to Cocteau Twins or My Bloody Valentine.

the rest of the music may be too atmospheric for you but check out the FAlty DL mix, it's all classic 2 Step. Did I tell you about Deadboy yet? IF not, check out his stuff
Listened to the MJ Cole mix at the gym... what the hell was I listening to? It sounded like DJ Boris, DJ Theo, Paulie D, etc. Jersey Shore Fist Pumping Anthems... all this annoying tribal electro, with annoying looped Jamaican vocals on some songs. Really awful stuff, a far cry from the smooth, soulful garage he made his name on.

I still like Best Coast. Nothing fantastic or anything, but I think it was pretty good summer fluff.
Same. The production is consistently outrageous - I hate to say it, but the guy is practically on an entirely different level at this point - and nearly every track has a hook worth selling your soul for. Shit is the real deal. :bow

Wait wait wait, before I waste my time on this, this is coming from someone who acknowledges that everything Kanye did past Late Registration was either forgettable or awful, correct? Is this new album like a comeback? I want to believe Kanye is good again.

oh, ghostface.
Ghost is my favorite rapper lol. The album has some good tracks on it, but kinda feels like a mixtape or something. So many great producers want to work with him, I don't understand why he relies on mixtape production. To be fair the album has some damn good beats, but others are like waat. Me likely tho

Real talk: I don't think I can seriously be friends with someone who seriously thinks Janelle Monae sucks, especially a girl. I already have little patience for them.
Slept on this album all year, even after Q-Tip said it was amazing a couple months ago. Finally gave it a listen. sheeeiitI actually downloaded it a few months back and then deleted it like a week later without listening to it. :lol
Sounds like someone revived 1995 era Prodigy and set him loose over the grimiest production of the year. There are some average tracks and the subject matter is limited, but damn when it's good it's amazing
What's the album called?
Danny Brown is opening for Das Racist soon. This was announced the day his new single so I checked him out. Damn. Where this guy been hiding?in Detroit :bow
Not that I'm aware of. I've always discovered stuff through blogs though. The cover of The Left's album caught my eye awhile ago on

There's an onslaught of content there, easy to get lost heh. Sites like NahRight and 2dopeboys are good too imo. But Bloggerhouse seems to cover a lot of Detroit stuff among other things. New Lady Gaga is...meh. I don't like the beat much. It sounds like standard eurobeat trance. It doesn't have the same kick as "Roma (ma ma ma), GAGA, roma (ma ma ma)". It just sounds...safe. I was hoping that with this album she'd shed the more trance undertones and embrace the sound of songs like Speechless and Dance in the Dark.
Wasn't her first single for Fame Monster Bad Romance?
I mean, this is the title track of her new album.
It's like a mash-up of Express Yourself and this:

New Gaga is catchy as fuck mainly because it basically rips off Express Yourself. Fun song, but pretty much shows how vapid she is. I'm all for sampling and shit obviously, but this is like MC Hammer/Diddy/Vanilla Ice type straight jacking

You could say Express Yourself is a rip of Respect Yourself with this line of thinking, which it probably is.

It's remarkable, really. No matter what trance-ish electronica you start out with, at some point the Youtube recommendations WILL show a Blümchen track. :wtf I live too close to Germany, that has got to be it.

It's more like Digital Ash, Desaparecidos and old school Bright Eyes than the Americana stuff he's been doing lately.

Deal with what? The album being a "grower"?
I find it hilarious when people don't like an album and call it a grower to save themselves from saying what they really think. 90% of the time, the album in question isn't anywhere near as complex as something that needs to grow on you should be.
Embryonic was a grower.
This album is just boring.
Because their expectations weren't met, they now have to lower them to accept this new album? I don't get what you're trying to say.
I was looking forward to it because I know Radiohead has a great album in them, but they have to get over this Eraser-like bullshit. Its played out. Again, I wasn't crazy about In Rainbows but I absolutely love All I Need. It was an incredibly well structured and well performed piece. So I know Radiohead CAN do it, they're just not.
I just feel like people are afraid to really express their lukewarm feelings about it by calling it a grower. The last 6 months have been incredible for music and this just really doesn't stack up at all.
I used to love Radiohead. But that Radiohead no longer exists. They're stuck in the same post-influential rut as Smashing Pumpkins.

I haven't heard the new RH yet, but I'm inclined to agree.
Standard as in "simplistic." It's not as good as OK Computer but it's still a great album...
Well, I like it.
I don't think Thom is actually bored here... it's a stylistic choice. This is the closest they've gotten to the kind of music he seems most into.
i lovvvveee it!
it's like they took the tone from Videotape and decided to make an entire album around it.
sooo good.
True true.
We're both hipster douches :(

Callin' it: 6.1
I downloaded a torrent of 600 Italo Disco songs, I've got a lot of digesting to do :lol
This really is one of the greatest genres of party music ever, I'm gona get into mixing it I think. Will just be flexing with dirty poor MP3 though, Italo vinyl is rare as fuck and expensive to boot
Callin' it: 6.1
Eh, I see a 7.8 or something like that.
PTH is a local Band, so sick of hearing about them.
Plus, Cancer Bats are so so so much better.

Be warned: they're still very much a twee pop group. A lot of people apparently find them to be disgustingly sentimental.

After listening to that and a couple others, I can see exactly what DistantM is referring to. I'm a sucker for the 'wall of sound' so I'm picking this album up.
*edit* Does the last album sound like this?
Listened to a couple tracks from the new Fleet Foxes, nothing grabbed me. I'll have to sit down and listen to the whole thing this week
The new album is good, but I find it hard to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. Their first record is fucking phenomenal though.

I've been obsessing over that Weeknd album the past few days.
Also, the new Panda Bear album is really fucking good. The album versions have a very dense and rich sound relative to the rather dull and murky singles. Bringing in Peter Kember to do the mixing probably saved this project from being a massive disappointment.

Well that is pretty much the truth, the only reasons people claim to like them is cause it has Dave Grohl and they're Nirvana apologists.
Saw three indie bands tonight live. Not bad. Saw Sleeper Agent, Manchester Orchestra and Cage The Elephant. I liked Cage The Elephant the most. They were really animated live, and their guitars and drums are pretty sweet. Suggest seeing them if they're ever your way.
should i bother seeing an irrelevant artist live? on the one hand, all the footage of recent performances i see is terrible, and the show would be expensive, but, on the other hand, he's still an irrelevant artist and this is supposed to be his last year of performances, because he's irrelevant. hmmm.

Pitchfork is slobbering over the new Bon Iver... can't say I completely agree. More like a really solid 8.5 to me than a 9.5... lots of good tracks (about 7 out of 10 on the album I personally think) but I would have liked it to be longer and maybe more cohesive as an album? Still easily one of the top albums of the year and shits all over the new Fleet Foxes.
This concludes your Sensitive Bearded Guy music interlude. Go back to arguing about rap and Lady Gaga now.
stfu, Brandnew. That track actually isn't that bad.
Have to say that Calgary, Perth and Holocene are really, really good. Rest of the album is kind of good but man, I don't think I'll ever get sick of listening to those songs.

This band just keeps getting better and better. I wasn't thrilled with their debut, as I know most of you weren't, but the Broken Dreams Club EP from last year was solid and well-rounded, lacking any of the hackneyed and obnoxious tracks that bogged down the first, and this track is absolutely fantastic.
Hadestown: A folk opera retelling of the story of Orpheous journey to the underworld to save his wife Eurydice, in the setting of a post-apocalyptic depression era America.
Rich with archetypal images and elements, and in the context of the current global economic problems (even though it was written years before the Sept 08 banking crisis), it is more Americana than Greek tragedy, although it closely follows this Orpheous story version.

I don't know if anyone here likes pop punk, but The Story So Far's debut album, Under Soil and Dirt, is the best "I'm really pissed off at a girl" pop punk album I've heard in at least 6 years easily. Sinking hooks, gang vocals, and misery. SO GOOD! :heart

It's kind of weird that London Elektricity seems like the only "liquid" with some value, and then the dude is capable of so much more on top of that. The overwhelming majority of self-dubbed "liquid" just seems like cheap trance with a somewhat jungle-ish beat.

Liquid is more jazzy, funky than trancey IMO... the more trancey D&B is called "trancestep" iirc. My favorite was always the LTJ Bukem-style atmospheric D&B, and my least favorite is the reggae influenced stuff popular in the early 90's.

Its pretty good actually, your friend is a good drummer. And tell him his wikipedia famous now!
Last year I specifically left a mixtape (Friday Night Lights) off my best of lists, arguing that it didn't qualify because it wasn't an album. But given the direction of music lately I'm not sure it's particularly logical to do so; a mixtape of new, exclusive music is certainly an "album" by today's standards. That's how I feel, but I'm guessing she meant shit that would be recognized by award shows and shit. I don't know why though. She listens to more mixtapes than I do.
Black Up from Shabazz Palaces for me. Section 80 and Dr. Lecter are fantastic, too.Never heard of them. I'll check it out.

Zeigenbock Kopf is a German Homo Industrial band making aggressive abrasive music dedicated to the male form and partying.spoiler (click to show/hide)Zeigenbock Kopf was a side project of John Dyer (famously of Thee Oh Sees) out of San Francisco parodying a fantastical gay culture based in Berlin. All of the songs are hilarious.[close]
I see. If you ever need rock music suggestions you know where to find me.Thanks.
El Camino is pretty great. Doesn't quite reach the heights of Brothers for me -- I miss the bluesy, downtempo numbers, and there's nothing here as nearly as good as their cover of Never Gonna Give You Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVyPBiD2rAg) -- but it's probably the most consistent thing they've done, and certainly the most "fun", beginning to end. That's mainly what I like about it. And that the sound is mainly guitar heave, not pianos and a bunch of other instruments like Mylo Xyloto (not knocking it, I actually liked it).
Even Nujabes' weakest is better than 99% of most hip hop producers.:lol
9. Jay-Z and Kanye West "Watch The Throne": The amount of money and critical success these guys rake in at all times seems to not make any sense. They're like the 2007 subprime mortgage bond market of human beings. That's what fame is like these days: completely untethered to reality, buoyed by some weird derivatives (Vodka sponsorship) that nobody really understands, and "too big to fail."http://www.chunklet.com/index.cfm?section=blogs&id=708

I don't get why people say James Blake is dubstep... he really is nothing of the sort, I don't even know what I'd call it... minimalistic downtempo/chill maybe?
Anyways, history lesson for you peeps from someone who was there :P Dubstep originally came from UK 2-step garage, which came from 4x4 garage, which came from sped-up versions of NYC/Jersey deep house producers...
so basically it went something like:

you upload (or search and select) one song and it's your "jam" You can have it playable for a week.
It's pretty cool. I have 5 invites if anyone is interested.
...and yet this deadmau5 fuck is wildly popular with his generic ass everything in his music. clearly some kid whose parents bought a bunch of gear for him :-\
of course, he churns out quantity, so there is that.
I'm too much of a fanboy Zero, forgive me.

Fionna Apple's record label is holding up her new album from being released. Again. omghahaha for fucks sake. She should just leak them and go on tour. :gun

Although he is now free, it doesn’t seem like fans will ever get to see the veteran Southern rap group together any time soon. XXL asked Bill if he plans on working with Willie D and Scarface again, and he said they didn’t seem interested in his new musical direction. His 2009 album, My Testimony of Redemption, saw the born-again rapper rhyming about his religious leanings.
“I don’t think any of them is interested,” he said of appearing on record with his former group. “I’ve never got the vibe that they would do a gospel song. ‘Cause when they talking about doing another Geto Boys album I said I would do it if I could rap like I’m rapping on my gospel album, I didn’t get a whole lot of cosigning on that from all the political parties concerned.”

Holy shit. Skrillex is Sonny Moore of FFTL? I had no idea until this post made me do some investigating. Mind blown.
Green Wing was god-tier comedy.
Also found some older CD with Way out West, right before it became about appeasing over-aged polish club scum and before DJing electronica became the modern hair band equivalent that it is today.

Nice picks, Fifstar... really love that Benoit and Sergio tune though I never really got that into Battle For Middle You... also saw Pillowtalk live in Brooklyn one night. Do you have any of your sets posted online?
Finally got around to listening to The Weeknd.
So he's an R&B singer with good production? What was all the fuss about? I mean it's good, but hardly revelatory.
He's amazing imo. 3 great mixtapes in a yearThe standard of a good album (otw), a godly album (thriller, duh), and then a steady slide further into 'not nearly as good, but still worth paying attention to? Seems like a fairly normal path for an artist to follow, but I imagine you're talking in terms of sales and cultural impact in which case yeah that's not EVER happening again.
Comparing anyone to MJ is dumb, as is holding anyone to that standard
I did enjoy his music, let me be clear. But I had read some article calling him the greatest talent since Michael Jackson, and those are some pretty big words to live up to.

Some decent riffs but the lyrics are too funny to keep a straight face while listening.
The new Ministry, and it's the worst thing I've heard in years. Decades of drugs and alcohol have taken their toll. That and almost everyone with talent for Al to mooch off of left the group. Not that he's a hack or anything, you don't get that many people to roll with you if you suck, but those days were a few decade and many drugs ago. Ministry was life changing shit for me back in the day and now it is sadly just shit. On the plus side the Fix documentary filmed around their Filth Pig era tour is finally on DVD in April. :rock

http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2012/04/david-byrne-and-bonnie-prince-billie-collaborate-a.html
David Byrne and Will Oldham (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy) have done five tracks for the soundtrack of a new Sean Penn movie where he plays some aging goth rocker or something, and they've recorded under the name "The Pieces of Shit" so I for sure am there day one.
i just watched this like 5 times in a row. i guess nostalgia cause i thrashed it in 97 and i still like the song but i never realised Fiona Apple was smoking hot when this song came out (i was 11)

I'd only heard a couple of her songs, and I'd liked them. Owl City is bad because it is insufferably, unapologetically derivative. Is that what you're seeing here, and if so, to what is DelRey's music owing?I got around to listening to the entirety of Lana Del Rey's LP and oh my god, it is so fucking terrible. Maybe people are liking her music ironically or because she's hot?
Some songs from her came up in my shuffle rotation of music on my iPhone and man, I think this is Owl City levels of awful here. I'm going to delete it, which is rare considering the terrible music I dislike but don't feel like pulling the trigger to delete it with many other songs I have.
Rob is awesome on his own, but White Zombie is incredibly good. I like his whole library, but it's clear that he's peaked. If you want something to feel nostalgic about, Electric Hellfire Club is very similarly constructed music, and has a couple of WZ members in it.Its been a while since I listened to this much White Zombie.Astro Creep is such a good record. Too bad the band hated each other too much to keep going, Rob solo just isn't the same.

it actually feels like i've been waiting since the self titled since i barely listened to Sisterworld. people tell me i'm too harsh on it but it lacks the innovation that i love them for (you could say the same of the s/t so idk). this is why i'm so excited for the new one! sounds like they're still doing what they're great at but with an (almost) entirely new palette.hmm, also cannot wait for the new Liars album

new Fionna Apple

I really like the new song. Gives me quite the Joanna Newsom vibe, which I didn't expect. It doesn't strike me as a single, at least not in 2012. Given how long her record label held the album, I had figured they would release something more poppy, or perhaps Adele-y. Then again maybe this isn't the actual single.
new Fionna Applei really like this! i can't find any word on who's produced it but could jon brion be back? sounds like him to me..

I'm loving this shit. I always wanted a revival of Houston swag rap and it finally happened. There's no DEEP MESSAGE but there's a lot of just dope shit talking for a change, no soul loops (not that there's anything wrong with soul loops), no preaching, just dudes who can flow having a good time.

I'm really enjoying recent production trends, too. It strikes me as heavily indebted to recent drag/witch house as well (which is in itself indebted to Houston-based production, but with a more pronounced focus on gloomy and haunting atmosphere).

New garbage album is boring :/ - bout wraps it up for them. At least we got 2 great CDs and one OK cdYeah, but what do you expect from an album coming after a seven year gap? Especially when considering the one right before the stop was not so great. I wanna see them on tour anyway since I never did back in the day.

EDIT: Holy shit it did.
I am seeing Cam'ron tomorrow. I can't believe it either.Where?!
Bushwick is getting a new music venue and high-end bar called the Well, and its initial show is going to be a homecoming for Cam’ron, the leader of the now more or less reunited Diplomats, commonly known as Dipset. His appearance on July 14 is part of an inaugural party that stretches from 4 to 10 P.M. The Well’s managing partners, Shay Vishawadia and Josh Richholt, have obtained part of the massive Hittleman Brewery, a historic building at 272 Meserole Street. In the front is a bar with twenty kinds of champagne and a wall of liquor, but mostly beer—three hundred varieties; in the back is an eleven-thousand-square-foot outdoor performance space, and that’s where Cam’ron will hold court. Cam’ron is one of hip-hop’s most inventive and original m.c.s, and also one of its most maddeningly combative: he and his mates Jim Jones and Juelz Santana spent a great deal of the past decade having minor feuds and releasing terrible action movies. These days, he’d be wise to cough up an album; maybe helping to christen a new space will put him in the right frame of mind. ♦

Russian Roulette is Rocky IV on wax minus the steroids and that ridiculous scene where the Soviets chant “USA! USA!” Not only do many of the song's titles come from the film, but chunks of the movie are sampled throughout the album as well. The record is about 45 minutes long but it contains no fewer than 30 short tracks, half of which are instrumentals; the other half short freestyles from Alchemist's pals like Schoolboy Q, Evidence, and Action Bronson. The album has no hooks and all the songs bleed into one another as the sound unfolds. Picture Alchemist climbing the mountain like Balboa in the harsh Russian winter while you play a game of Russian roulette and have a blast.http://www.complex.com/music/2012/06/the-50-best-albums-of-2012-so-far/the-alchemist-russian-roulette

Muse: 'We took inspiration from Skrillex'
Muse have revealed that they were inspired by Skrillex for their forthcoming album 'The 2nd Law'.
In a world exclusive interview with the band in this week's NME, which is on newsstands from today or available digitally, drummer Dom Howard reveals that the band were so inspired after watching a Skrillex gig, they penned the track '…Unsustainable' – which featured on the trailer for the forthcoming album.
"We went to see Skrillex in Camden around October," he says. "We went, 'Fuck, it's so heavy,' loved it. I was like a full metal gig, they had circles of death, people were moshing, I hadn't seen a reaction like that to electronic music before. We took inspiration and came up with 'The 2nd Law: Unsustainable'."

That's some pretty hard evidence to the contrary, AFAIC.people are always calling bullshit on whatever i put on (and invariably feel too passionately about). maybe that displays more an inability to read a crowd than inferior taste.
my favorite band from the last, like, 6 years. Them, Islands, and Fang Islandhave Islands done anything since Arm's Way? i was a bit disappointed by how pedestrian the arrangements were on that one after the tropical splendor of Return to the Sea.

I made a new house mix if anyone's interested

Hmmm, are you a fan of Bicep perchance? This mix reminds me of their style a lot...

Two other albums, both very different from Return to the Sea and Arm's Way.thanks for this btw BrandNew, i've been listening to Vapours a bit and i am certainly enjoying it more than Arm's Way (which I also gave a second chance) but mostly it's just got me listening to Return to the Sea again (just in time for summer!)
Return to the Sea > Vapours > A Sleep and a Forgetting > Arm's Way

:o
lady friend put me on this shit
So I got tickets to the KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas because I really wanted to see Of Monsters and Men and it was the only show they're doing in the LA/OC area on this tour. I'm pretty stoked since I haven't been to an all day music festival in like 6 years even though I go to shows fairly regularly.
The lineup is:
THE KILLERS
JACK WHITE
FUN
M83
NEON TREES
PASSION PIT
GROUPLOVE
OF MONSTERS AND MEN
ALEX CLARE
IMAGINE DRAGONS
Now I know about a quarter of these bands very well and am a fan (The Killers, Of Monsters and Men, M83) and I've heard songs here and there of most of the other ones (Jack White, Fun, Passion Pit, Grouplove) and there's a few I just don't know at all (Neon Trees, Alex Clare, Imagine Dragons).
I kind of need a primer to check out all these bands besides the 3 I know, over the next 2-3 weeks before the show so I'm familiar with the songs. Any recommendations of the best album to start with some of these groups? I started listening to the latest Grouplove album and it's ok and I like a few tracks but a lot of it seems kind of too mainstream pop boring for my style.
Its my favorite album of this year- and there were A LOT of great albums this year.
I like Video Games, that's pretty much it. Although to be fair I haven't listened to her album
Atramental*shrug* It's nice but it doesn't quite grab me.

When i think about the title "In McDonalds" while? hearing this track, i have to imagine a young homeless in a winter night sitting in Mc Donalds, looking out of the window to the empty streets
and thinking what just went wrong in his life
That is exactly my own thoughts when I listen to this. My heart is in bits right now. This song brings back memories and feelings of a person that is long gone... And everything I remember is wrapped up in sodium street lights, warm night air, cigarettes and that naive feeling that it would go on forever. Damn, Burial. Every? single time... :(
This is? the sound played after you pass away and you're soul is traveling through the astral. But this is never ending.
in mcdonalds reminds me of retared fat fucks that dont know what ficking real food is. fucking kill em all.? you pathetic fucking fat fucking pieces of shit.
I was reading this interview with Burial yesterday: http://www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/interviews/burial_unedited-transcript
People in the comments sections of Burial vids always get reaaaally pretentious trying to describe his music. Thought it was fascinating to see how much better the dude himself is at verbalizing the moods his music is supposed to evoke.

it doesn't take much of an ear to hear that this band is special.

ive always liked tegan and sara fuq off fuckers
I bought Hearttrob on Tuesday, I think it's pretty okay so far.
I was pretty skeptical of the more pop tone the album was going for but I think it works. It's not some big evolution on the music they like to make but it's a very lean 10-track album that feels perfectly solid. And hey, good on them for having a radio-ready album without it feeling like pandering or "selling out".

Listening to this a bit more, this list should be way, way longer. The Kinks penetrate every song on this album in some manner or another, Syd Barrett, Reed and Dylan (the organ on No Destruction, coupled with the vocal inflection in the verse which I swear is lifted directly from something on the Basement Tapes), the Beatles (the chorus of San Francisco is lifted from "Only a Northern Song"), the Zombies, and a bit of Gun Club/Cramps on the title track.
There's absolutely nothing original about the sound of this record. They've deftly applied so many influences simultaneously that it's easy to forgive, but they're essentially Jet with a dumber band name.
Liz PhairExile is awesome, too bad about virtually everything else she's ever done.
i have no idea what you wanted but this is a good ghostface song. you have classic narrative via nonsense, that dusty raspy 70s library sound down perfectly, a great set up for a concept album and as a bonus you get live instrumentation rather than loops.

this is better than anything they've done in some time though. i've been unimpressed since A New Name, i think the only song i like from Myth Takes.:datass

Tried listening to Beach House tonight and didn't like it. Too slow and ambient, kind of boring for me.
Bebpo. BEBPO. See Janelle Monae. BEBPO! Do it.
Beach House's first album is amazing
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mit_freundlichen_Gr%C3%BC%C3%9Fen_%28Album%29
"If I fall over dead then that's going to be my last album. You never know. But I'm still hard as Krupp steel, tough as leather and nimble as a greyhound"
Various news sites pointed out that this phrase was coined by Hitler in a speech held on Sep 14th 1935 in front of 50,000 Hitler Youth. He had used these words to describe how he wished German boys to be. Heino's manger Jan Mewes assured that they had not know of the historical context.
isn't referencing nazi stuff just a common way for artsy europeans to get attention/troll though? Not for Germans, no.

Really awesome tech-trance/neo-trance/minimal, whatever you want to call it, from a local (yet strangely popular) record label:I like this. Sounds like a theme during a "main character loads ammo, guns, and grenades into duffel bag" montage in an 80s action flick.

Savages are the latest inexplicably hyped to death by the indiefuck press thing, but they sound kinda Banshees-ish and post punky so I kinda like 'em anyway. Hope they end up having a Juju/Kaleidoscope in them but they could always pull an Interpol and go to complete shit from their second album onwards. Seriously, what the fuck Interpol? Spun Sonic Youth's Daydream nation the other day and naturally it's still pretty awesome. A shame Thurston ran off with some other woman apparently and now SY is no more. Pysched as fuck for The National's new one next week. Nobody will read any of this. :gloomy

R&B is a pretty broad genre these days. The safest recommendation for someone who's digging the new D'Angelo is Maxwell's last album, BLACKsummers'night. If you're willing to indulge in more poppy type of shit, check out The Dream. Also (while probably not really considered 'R&B' by todays standards) check out Jai Paul's bootleg album. He's kind of like Prince if Prince weren't so prone to self indulgent technical wankery and had a tenth of his current recording budget.
That's their best album in my opinion, also probably their weirdest
Not a fan of Prince.

Perhaps the oddest sample discussed in the breakdown is in “Live A Lifetime Love,” which samples American Juggalo, a documentary about Insane Clown Posse.
